Hey my friends, all of this stuff would be moot if Trot, Coco, Tek, and the rest of the gang would just get more consistent and help the offense take the load off of Papi and Manny. The fact is we all know this thing is going down to the wire and not matter how positive we want to be this is going to be a close race all the way. As for Trot, none of us would moan about his power numbers if suddenly he starts belting out some doubles and driving in a bunch of runs. That said, I think tonight we ought to give Pena a shot at Zito. As much as love Gabe Kapler, face it, he hasn't hit a lick in his last 25 or so at bats. What do you guys think?

700---For some reason Trot Nixon has become a whipping boy by many Red Sox fans. I think it is because of two things. One, his injury reputation, much of which, by the way, is because of how hard he plays. The second reason is that many fans are suprised and disappointed at his reduced power numbers. I'm not advocating him swinging for the fences, but if he would get on a hot streak and drive in a bunch of runs I think much of the criticism would be forgotten. I think much of the anger, if that's what it is, should be directed at Coco Crisp and Jason Varitek who have not given us much offense all year. :harhar:

Riverside next week cannot come fast enough for me. My God, do you think Harris would have survived if he played for the Yankees? Steinbrenner would have put lickety split on the "D" Train out of the Bronx in two shakes of a monkey's ass.:dunno: :thumbdown
-
I'm still shocked that Willy Harris is still on the team. After he got picked off Thursday night which helped cost us a game, I thought for sure that the FO would finally realize this guy is useless and would send him on his way. For some reason Theo and the gang like this worthless bum.

Should Manny Play in All-Star Game
seabeachfred replied to Papelbon58's topic in Boston Red Sox Talk
Well 700 Hitter, I would much prefer Manny doing the kissing, like kissing the ball all over the ballpark and kicking American League ass while about it. That would please us no end and make Selig and the rest of his pathetic crowd take notice and shut up. -
Suggestions For Theo On Improving The Team In June And July
seabeachfred replied to RoyNHSox's topic in Boston Red Sox Talk
Roy, you're right on that one; Tito has used Seanez sparingly and he must continue to do so until in some mop up operations he shows something that resembles effectiveness. With the second half starting tomorrow it behooves Francona to utilize his bullpen wisely and not take chances with pitchers who have not been able to handle the pressure, and that means Seanez for one. -

Rician, it is not Tito's right to use Seanez in critical situations. The other guys have done well enough that Seanez can now be used in mop-up work when he are far far ahead or way way behind. When the game is on the line, he needs to be a far from the madding crowd as can be allowed.:thumbdown :dunno:  -
Should Manny Play in All-Star Game
seabeachfred replied to Papelbon58's topic in Boston Red Sox Talk
Well that's my hard luck. I love to see jokes but remember that I am a senior citizen and sometimes I don't think as quickly as I once did. Good to know we are both on board with Manny sitting it out. I just hope his knee doesn't give him a lot of trouble in the second half. I think he just might be lights out for us if he stays healthy. :D :D :D -

I'd take a bag of oranges for Seanez. I think this guy is a travesty for our team and if he stays around as sure as God made little green applies he is going to cost us a few crucial games this summer. Francona has no intention of letting a bad situation like Seanez alone; he will be stubborn and keep using him to try and prove to himself that this guy can do it. We've seen this before with Embree and Mantei last year. The only relief came when Theo finally got off his ass and took these two toys away from Tito and released them. It had already cost us about seven games that I can remember and with it the ALK East Title. -
Jsing, if I were the Red Sox I would not be so gung-ho to think Wily Mo Pena can step in and take Nixon's place next year. First of all, if you've seen him play right field he is a disaster there. Remember the series he played against the Red Sox last year? Couldn't get out of his own way. This season he played a fly ball into a home run in the home opener which I saw with my own eyes. A Little Leaguer could have caught that ball. In eight years of pro ball he has NOT improved at all in RF. Besides, I see those strikeouts piling up by the dozens and all those LOB's that he specialized in with the Reds. Let's be absolutely sure this guy is ready and right now I don't think he is. Now if David Murphy can keep doing well in Pawtucket we could have a platoon situation with WMP but that still doesn't solve the problem of Pena's bad act in right field.
-
Roy and the rest of you out there, if Nixon will be reasonable in his demands and prove he wants to stay with the Red Sox and gives us a home town discount I think we can come up with a two year contract and an option year for about six or seven mil a year. If he suddenly gets stars in his eyes and thinks he is worthy of a big payday then it is adios. I think he will be reasonable. Unlike some dirty bastard outfielder that I know I think Trot truly wants to stay in Boston.

How many wins to take the AL East this year?
seabeachfred replied to RoyNHSox's topic in Boston Red Sox Talk
And do any of you really care who the hell the Devil Rays drafted first. I'm only concerned that when they come to Boston again we beat the living s*** out of them and remind them that we are the Red Sox and not those frauds who went down to Tropicana Hole and lost three of four. It is going to take 96 wins to take the AL East this season and we should be able to do it. Let's just hope that our guys all do their part and we get the pitching needed to make it happen. :D -
Should Manny Play in All-Star Game
seabeachfred replied to Papelbon58's topic in Boston Red Sox Talk
I could give a rip if Damon had slipped into Manny's spot. Three days off from the rigors of playing could be just what the doctor ordered to help Manny's knee to get better so we have a healthy clean up hitter ready for the big push in the second half. Didn't effect the game, did it? The American League came back with two outs in the ninth and won it again. Boy does the NL really suck. That's another topic, though. Good for Manny to sit this one out. -
Hammer, I've got to hand it you----you can find some humor in just about everything. For me Loretta's making the starting lineup hits very close to home since I know the guy personally, he played for the Senior Babe Ruth Team I founded in 1993, and grew up in the same town I live in. Of course, I knew he would be a great addition to our team this year even when he got off to a slow start. He has been a good example of why our team is doing so well thus far. Our infield may be all new this year but defensively it is the best in the league. :harhar: :dunno:
-
Schill, I worded it wrong and you bailed me out. Thanks. He should bat second or third in the lineup. That guarantees him an at-bat in the first inning of every game, and could mean an extra 20 or so at-bats while he is rehabbing at Pawtucket.
-
If he is getting good instruction and getting plenty of at-bats that could be just enough for him to get ready for his return to the Red Sox. One more thing, though. It is important for him to be batting near the t op of the lineup so he gets as many at-bats as possible. Hitting him sixth or seventh will not do the job; he has to hit between second and fourth to get an extra at bat a game. :D
-
Yank, Riverside, and 700, you guys have pretty much said it all about Pena. He has no options left but if I know the rules of rehab, he can be sent down to Pawtucket or somewhere else for an indefinite time. That needs to be done so he gets to see a lot of pitches and works on his mechanics. I only hope we have a minor league hitting instructor who knows his stuff because he will not be around Papa Jack, who just may be the best hitting instructor around. Come to think of it, I don't know who our minor league batting coach even is. At any rate, let's make sure Wily Mo is ready before we bring him up in the stretch drive. When he spells Trot and Manny I want to make certain he can go in there and help the cause.
-
Don't say that Crunchman. We want to keep it positive around here. We Red Sox fans have had enough of that bad karma over the years; from now on it is blue skies and green lights ahead. Agreed???? I think Pena will be a decent player; I just don't know if he will ever hit for a good average. Power? He has that in abundance.
-
SCM, too bad Manny and Nixon aren't about four or five years younger, otherwise this subject would not be necessary. As sit is, we have to start thinking about the future and that is why the Red Sox drafted Jason Place in the first round. He projects into a tremendous prospect, power, speed and a great body. Now if he only develops into the power the Red Sox think he is we could strike paydirt in about four or five years. With Pena and Papi still around then we would have decent power in the lineup and some good gap hitters to keep our offense clicking, guys like Ellsbury, Pedroia and Lowrie.
-
When the Red Sox traded for Pena it was because they believed they had no real big power prospects in their farm system. Except for Brandon Moss who could become one if he ever gets consistent and learns how to make consistent contact, the Red Sox were right. The problem is Pena has used all his minor league options and still has the problem of discipline at the plate and strikeouts. Now we have an opportunity to give him a large rehab and not count it as a minor league option. He needs at-bats and video tape observations to really get him ready for when he bring him back up. Let's make sure he's ready because when he comes up he will no doubt get a large number of at-bats and we need him hitting well for us when called on.
-
RS, I'm going to have to start perusing the minor league threads on this website and others so I can get a complete lowdown on the prospects besides the one I know about. Thanks for the heads-up on Wagner.

Suggestions For Theo On Improving The Team In June And July
seabeachfred replied to RoyNHSox's topic in Boston Red Sox Talk
Riverside, glad you're with me on the Clement thing. Last season I was a big booster of Matt and defended him on Dirt Dogs and the Red Sox forum until I was totally outnumbered. This year has showed me I was wrong about him. The guy simply cannot pitch under real pressure; he has been yanked from the Padres and Cubs rotation for the same reason he has failed here---he cannot control his pitches and seems to meltdown every time a real crisis develops. Time to cut our loses and write the guy off. Send him down for a rehab and see how he pitches at Triple A. If he cannot dominate down there it is simply a given that his was a mistake and trying to hold onto him because he is owed a lot of money is also deciding to take down the fans and team with him because he will not be effective here anymore than he was in San Diego or Chicago. -
Ahhonn, I think Jsing was talking about the Red Sox quest for corner power. For some reason we have not signed any big boppers of late and that is why they drafted Jason Place in the first round. He is a power hitting outfield prospect who plays centerfield (a real rarity) but will probably be put in a corner outfield position if he develops into a Major Leaguer because we will have Jacoby Ellsbury playing that position for a long time starting in two years or so. We have guys in our system capable of hitting 20-25 homers, but no one projected to be a 40+ man---that is, as of yet.
-
Jsing, once again you hit it on the head; yes corner power is the toughest thing to find in baseball, and Papa Jack is an excellent hitting coach. Yes, we are going to need a big power man to take Manny's place after 2008 because everyone knows he is leaving us as soon as his contract is up. Pena can be devastating at Fenway if he develops. It looks like Crisp will be in left and Jacoby Ellsbury in center with David Murphy the fourth outfielder to give each of them a rest. In a few years we will have Dustin Pedroia and Jed Lowrey and Jeff Natale in our infield and all are good hitters but very average with the power. What we should also be looking for is a power hitting catcher while we are about it.
-
SCM, you call it bashing; I call it something else. Look, if WMP becomes our next great power hitter all Red Sox Nation will rejoice. I just have this thing for strikeouts and I just don't think he will ever measure up to Big Papi and to compare him with David does nothing but add more pressure to Pena. If Papa Jack can keep working his swing to where he makes more consistent contact then we've hit the jackpot because we will need some right handed power to take the place of Manny Ramirez when he leaves after the 2008 season. I'm hoping for the best with Wily Mo, but maybe I am guilty of expecting the worst. Isn't that what most Red Sox fans have come to expect over the years?
