  1. Essential isn't the right word, because the rest of the bullpen can be pretty strong without him. I agree a lot of people are using it and they shouldn't. But, if he pitches like he did 2 years ago we should have one of the best bullpens in baseball. If he pitches like last year we are probably slightly below average. We still have depth, but there will be a question mark around he the closer will be.
  2. Scouts Inc.'s latest mock draft has Jonathan Joseph going 19th overall in the first round. If hes there in the 2nd round it would be a great pickup though. I hate doing mock drafts just because you have no idea whose going to be there but I'd put the following guys as all good picks in the first round for the Pats. CB: Tye Hill, Clemson Jimmy Williams, Virginia Tech Ashton Youboty, Ohio State LB: Ernie Sims, Florida State Chad Greenway, Iowa Demeco Ryans, Alabama Bobby Carpenter, Ohio St RB/WR: Deangelo Williams, Memphis Lendale White, USC Chad Jackson, Florida Santonio Holmes, Ohio St And someone to think about if he falls to us: Winston Justice, OT, USC 1/3-2/3 of these guys won't be available when we pick, but i think its possible for anyone of them to fall.
  3. Mel Kiper in his most recent chat on ESPN.com has projected both lendale white AND Deangelo Williams falling to the pats now that arizona has signed edge, and jamal lewis has gone back to baltimore along with mike anderson. I'd love if one of these guys fell, but given the choice I'd love to see us draft williams.
  4. It depends on who gets the top pick. Some teams like Adam Morrison more than Gay, others like Rudy Gay more. Teams that could use a big will probably take aldridge first. Chad Ford says Andre Bargnani is a dark horse. While he probably won't go #1, i think theres a good chance he could bump one of these guys out of the top 3.
  5. I agree with Sizlin. He may not be the best commisioner, but to say hes done nothing for baseball is pretty idiotic. He was the driving force behind the wild card and creating 6 divisions. He was also a key player in creating interleague play. Not everyone loves interleague play, but its not a bad thing.
  6. Either one would probably cost 2 of Lester, Papelbon, Pedroia, and Hansen, and maybe another low level prospect. Cabrera would still have 3 years starting next year until he was eligible for free agency though. The article may say He'd likely get $5 million in arbitration, and it might be right, but that sounds like easily a record for a first year arbitration player.
  7. I understood your point, and i stick by what i said. Soriano isn't that good offensively. Away from texas last year: Avg: .224 Obp: .265 Slg: .374 OPS: .639 Thos are awful. Not below average, awful. He is not a 40/40 threat. Stolen bases decline rapidly with age. He might have one more decent season stealing. He won't hit 20 HR's playing in Washington and he wouldn't hit 25 in fenway. He doesn't walk, hit for average, or get on base. His defense is awful.
  8. Sure I'll disagree. You'll have the worst second basemen defensively in baseball and the worst shortstop defensively. Soriano isn't that good offensively. He hit for a lot of homeruns in texas, the best hitters park in the AL. He hit for a bad average, and didn't get on base at all. He was awful on the road last year. Beyond all that you need to consider what it would take to get him. It would result in another downgrade from the club to subtract from your soriano equation, plus the money you'd pay him this year.
  9. I would love to see Ortiz extended, but we have an option for 2007 on him. Its not a terrible thing if we don't get anything done this year.
  10. I've posted Sorianos road numbers before and I'll post them again. Avg: .224 Obp: .265 Slg: .374 OPS: .639 2006 salary, $10+ million. He is horrible defensively. We have a pretty good 2b already. Soriano is the most overated player in baseball.
  11. He has skipped every photo day for his 18 year career according to Bob Lobel on sports final, so don't read too much into that. The chances of him pitching for the sox this year is small, but I wouldn't say 0. More like 5%
  12. Both BA and BP rank Liriano #1. BA has Velander of Detroit also ahead of Cain, while BP has Cain 2. I know its not a big difference, but do you know anyone ranking Cain in front?
  13. Rumors are that Vince Young has scored a 6 on the wonderlic test, which would be the lowest score in the tests history. Its possible the test was scored incorrectly and he is taking the test again. On a note more related to this thread, Kiper is expected to update his Big Board soon and do another mock draft. I believe his last one had the pats drafting RB Lawrence Maroney.
  14. 33 K's in 23.2 major league innings last year. He's rated the #1 pitching prospect in baseball (felix hernandez is no longer eligible.)
  15. Washington isn't going to compete this year, Wells is going to retire after this year, and he would threaten to hold out or retire if traded there. He isn't going to Washington. I'd bet anything on it. Washington wouldn't offer anything more than a crappy prospect that would turn into nothing if even that. We all know he doesn't have a no trade clause so you can all stop posting it. That doesn't mean he wouldn't be a major pain in the ass if they got him.
  16. When it comes to free agency I'd agree. However, they do have the best farm system among the contenders. Simply by trading Steve Finley they upgraded over last year because they can move Erstad to center and give Kotchman the everday 1b job. Also, if Brandon Wood breaks through this year, that would be another big upgrade for them. Sidetrak: I'd be shocked if the Red Sox are in the top 20 in sacrafice bunts this year.
  17. This is a perfect strategy if every one of our prospects reach their full potential. Of course you have a better chance of hitting the lottery than Pedroia, Pinckney, Ellsbury, Lowrie, Murphy, Hansen, Delcarmen, Lester, and papelbon all becoming above average major league players capable of leading a team to the post season.
  18. This thread was created 5 days ago. He still isn't late yet, and your quoting an old post to agree with someone who called him arrogant??? He has permission to arive one day late. I would love for one poster to give a coherant argument as to why this is a terrible thing that is detrimental to the team. Anybody? Or are you all just going to shoot off one liners attacking his character with no reasoning behind it?
  19. I like the Sox chances, and think they've improved more than most people think. Minnesota isn't in the east, but they have a great chance of having a huge year this year. They already have the best pitcher in the game and have the best pitching prospect in the game, liriano, to bring up this year.
  20. Yeah, I wasn't saying we should trade them Clement because we could get a ton for him. I just don't see why they would have any interest in Wells. I don't think Washington would offer us a thing for Wells. If rumors popped up i think Wells would threaten to retire before going there, and make a bad situation worse. If you were running the Nats would you offer anything for a guy that has demanded to play for a list of teams that doesn't include yours?
  21. Just because Wells does not have a no trade clause doesn't mean we can trade him to the Nationals. He's requested a trade to a west coast team. Why would the Nationals offer us anything for a player that doesn't want to go there? I think they've learned their lesson from Soriano. I think Clement would be a better option to trade to the Nationals.
  22. Exactly. I made a similar point and everyone that was bashing him, and there were at least 5 members, have refused to support their criticism since my post. I hope its because they realize how much they over reacted and how dumb getting mad over this is.
  23. Riverside, My point was that the Yankees cannot put Jaret Wright on the DL to void his contract if he is not hurt. Someone asked if that was possible. I know the clause is in the contract that if he is actually hurt and goes on the DL for more than 75 days they can void the final year.
  24. I don't think thats possible. The players union is way to strong in MLB to let something like that slide. If a players not hurt, and says hes healthy, you can't just put him on the DL, especially if there is a clause in his contract that lets it be void if he goes on the DL.
  25. You have a twisted sense of the term disloyal. It was pretty clear the Duke didn't want Clemens back, and Pedro got an extra guranteed year to leave. If they got hurt in their last year with the Red Sox, we wouldn't be offering them a contract. Theres no loyalty from the team to the player, why should it go the other way?
