  1. The stat disregards hits like his game winner last year in April and his game winner against the DBacks in 2001 WS. That being said I would still much rather have a Ortiz 8th inning blast than an Arod 3rd inning blast. Both are important IMO, but the late inning play is the stuff that stays with you psychologically. If Ortiz never gets another hit in the 8th for the rest of the year, I would still intentionally walk him with first base open. That's just straight up honesty. Ok that's more sensible since we're talking about a stat that basically measures a hitter's ability to drive in runs. This is something I don't feel jeter has ever been good at, whether it be in the first inning or in the 9th. Why do I still label him clutch? because he is the one who is scoring the runs for the people who get the clutch hits. I don't know Johnny Damon's stat last year when applied with the same formula but it probably isn't that high either. However, someone had to be on base for Ortiz to succeed in that type of situation. Driving in runners is just one part of being clutch (albeit a huge part), but there are many other things that makes one clutch. Just remember, the clutch RBI guys can't be clutch if the guys ahead of them arent being clutch by not being on base. I don't know Jeter's OBP after the 8th or 7th or whatever, but it seemed to me that he was a part of every big rally in the last 10 years.
  2. I thought he was 1 for something in your other stat. Please, just stick with one stat and go from there.
  3. Those HRs I pointed out was to show you how slanted the stat was. I won't bother getting into an argument about Jeter's clutchness, because frankly both our minds are made up on that subject. I'm only showing you that your magical stat ignores some things.
  4. The stat he used magically wiped away two game winners by Jeter after the 8th inning.
  5. lol, just keep redefining stats until you get a formula that you like. In this instance ignoring things like Jeter's game winning HR off BHK in 2001 WS 10th inning. Or the game early last year when he hit a walk off HR against the Sox.
  6. If he wins this lawsuit, he will go after the mini bats that they give away to little kids next. i hope someone gives him asound beating witht hem
  7. Definetely. Arod's playing in Duncan's natural spot. Soriano's gonna be a FA next year, and its a sexy name media wise. It has all the makings of a typical Steinbrenner-Tampa Bay move. That being said, when Cashman re-upped, greater control over personnel decisions was one of his sticking points. This will be a oood test of that promise by George. I definetely think it's in the realm of possibilities though.
  8. The Sox won last night's game because this year you have a superior bullpen. Our short relivers suck ass except for Mo. As long as Pap continues his success in there with 2 former closers in Timlin and Foulke setting him up, your team will probably win most of the games that we used to win. That's my baseball theory anyway. I still have confidence in my club, lastyear they looked dead in the water compared to the Sox but somehow we manged to scrap out the division. I think this year might be a similar situation. My only fear is that Eric Duncan will be dealt for Soriano soon.
  9. because we've had this argument in the other thread already. I'm not the type of guy who likes to repeat himself. The media always does this anyway. They'll wait until someone is having a bad stretch (for Jeter, his fielding errors, Yankees not winning in 5 years) and then pounce on him. We're simply taking our lumps right now because quite frankly we're not that good a club right now. If Schilling has another bad start, there will be articles suggesting he focus more on baseball and less on talking to the media. That's how the media plays these things.
  10. He's right. He definetely should have gotten one considering he obviously has a vagina and is over 18. http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/5598788
  11. This thread is about the only positive thing from yesterday after that debacle against the Sox. =( Thanks everyone again for your well wishes!
  12. We were totally shocked when we saw the priority mail package because the only other time I got one like that was when I won the first week of the Red Sox Contest. Even more shocking was the little gift left inside for us. The wife's always made fun of the fact that I like to visit a Red Sox website and talk baseball ("why talk when you just saw the game?"), but she has now really encouraged me to spend more time on these forums. This is the sweetest (in a purely heterosexual sense) thing that has happened to us since we got married. And I aint saying that to blow smoke up anyone's ass. You simply don't expect this kind of behavior from an Internet forum. Thank you SFoC! Thank you TalkSox! We are genuinely touched.
  13. the saddest part is I posted it right after Beckett. 4 Wins 5 HR 36 Runs total = 45
  14. 4 Wins 5 HR 33 Runs total = 42
  15. The Post is ALWAYS full of themselves.
  16. Since this is a blowout, I hope the Sox lay it on the Yankees with at least 4 more HRs by the end of the game. If my team has to lose, at least I'll make some money off of it from SFOC's contest
  17. hell yeah I fear him. anyone who watches baseball would be pissing in their pants if this guy came up against your team in a key situation. and I don't think it's necessary to hit Ortiz. I think the writer was advocating a brushback or two. There's a diff between dusting someone, and beaning them.
  18. I suppose a guy his size can't help looking like he's crowding the plate.
  19. that's from the NY Post btw
  20. I've always advocated dusting him. I remember in 2004 when Matsui was going buckwild and then got dusted in game 3 or 4, and batted like .200 for the rest of the series. It's a good and sound strategy to at least make the guy think twice about crowding the plate.
  21. probably get a lawyer to fend off the inevitable lawsuit. not sure though. I'd like to say I would throw it back to make a statement about how much I hate what he has done to the game. But selling the ball would really make things easier for me financially. I could send my future kids to college and buy a house. If I was rich, I'd throw it back, but in the spot I'm in now, I honestly would not know. Baseball has been my favorite sport since I was a kid.
  22. There are better ways of defending others. It's all good though. I'm not the only one who feels that way about sabermetrics, and you're not the only one who believes in it. So let's just leave it at that.
  23. QFT... I couldn't agree with you more. When I would discuss baseball in the past with people, it would be about who had the best looking swing, who had the best follow etc. Nowadays, it's all about someone's RISP with a 1 run lead and after the 7th inning, which I think is a stat called CL. It might work for some people, but personally it's information overload IMO and takes the fun out of it.
  24. lol thanks for the well wishes guys. I'm actually kinda freaked aobut it but I don't have much of a choice as it is a quickie wedding ordered by her mom (and no the fiancee is not pregnant) =P
