Sox and Yankees only teams to pay Luxury tax
ksushi replied to Beckett95's topic in Boston Red Sox Talk
The Sox, Angels and Yankees usually have to pay it. -
Any rumors on the offer? I suppose it isn't manny because the manny for glaus deals all fell apart quickly, and I don't see them giving up lester or anyone. Maybe Arroyo and Marte? I don't know how i would feel about that, i really don't know about this. I'm not a big glaus guy.

I think a guy like millwood would love an oppurunity to be in boston and rack up the wins for a contender. I think hes just that sort of pitcher, hes not a money deal in a losing town kinda guy. I'd like to see him end up here now actually. I am officially in favor of this. I think that this would definetly send clement and wells packing but if we did a clement for reed, a wells and youk or somebody for linebrink cause wells isnt enough for the padres to make a deal like that, and im not even certain they want to disassemble their bullpen for wells so it might not get done at all. He won't get burnett money, if there is one thing we should all know about boras right now its that hes a hard nosed dick but also a great compromiser and he always comes to a deal thats right around good for both parties. He said 7, but settled for four with big money, he says AJ burnett money but will do it for 4 years 40 with benefits. He also said all out no trade for varitek but he and theo worked out an agreement where all sox 10-5 players would recieve no trade protection. The guy is an *******, but hes very good at what he does. His bark is louder than his bite though.

Sox front office...umm not gettin' it done
ksushi replied to MANNYHOF24's topic in Boston Red Sox Talk
Lucchino has certain things he is supposed to say. He isn't supposed to say "Yeah, we're in trouble now so we have to keep manny" That would make you even more unhappy then you are. The sox are in a bad spot, but not a bad spot that they were unprepared for. I think Reed is a good option, the sox are now in on Millwood, they still have wells to deal and the short stop situation will get resolved by either a move of Loretta, or an Alex Gonzalez signing. Gonzalez would be a great option, he fits the type we are going for. He isn't a lugo so don't group him there, lugo is a short stop in the mold of edgar in that he is supposed to be good offensivley and hes supposed to be a good base runner, but defensively he is flashy at times but makes a lot of errors. He is not worth giving up talent for, but you only have to give up money for gonzalez, I say do it. The sox front office would be umm.... not getting it done if they traded away marte and lester and signed damon to a huge contract. We'd be sitting here in four years talking about how we can get back into the playoffs. I'd rather be talking about a world series repeat. They're ummmm, doin' ok. -
How is that logic reasonable? Pitching is expensive, I would pay for it. I would take the ERA King over a 33 year old in need of nightly cortozones anyday. Not to say Millwood is a spring chicken or anything but it would be a much better signing.

Sheffield hates everybody.

Why both crisp and reed? Despite his inability to live up to his promise trot nixon is still a viable option in right field. You can't deal both clement and arroyo, not with pitching being so scarce. No way. I say get reed and meche and see what is available for Wells, it won't be linebrink without adding something into that deal. Perhaps youkilis? Move Lowell to first, and put Marte at third. I like that.

Lets trade for a 41 year old who hits like a girl scout, as a matter of fact lets deal a hall of famer for him. Great.

I just want to say one last time, that johnny is a gum and glue centerfielder two years from now and that the sox can allocate money in a much much better way with the future in mind. That said, there are worse ways to spend 12 million dollars. J-Lo took out a ten million dollar insurance policy on her ass. Thats weird. But yeah, Damon leaving is going to be felt hard this year, and over the grand scheme of things would 12 million a year make or break a baseball team? Here is a new answer, WE DONT KNOW! There could be oppurtunities missed out on because of an expensive centerfielder who is taking up space and not producing, or it would actually work out. It is a business, and evil corp did just lure away a co-worker for alittle more money and I'm sure it will work out great for them. But, evil corp isn't exactly a blue chip company and we don't know how things project for them in the future. RedCorp or whatever will be paying dividends to its share holders for a long time to come with some of the young employees it is bringing up through the system. f*** Ken Lay. That post did make me happy, dave. Any bad blood you think we may have really doesnt exsist, you're second favorite vanderbiltian. Not really, but you get the idea.

Wait wait wait, whoa. When did athletes begin playing for the love of the game? Correction little leagues play for the love of the game, and they pay to play. Once you know you're good enough, except in rare instances, its all about ego especially in todays world. EGO. EGO! 300 page binder? Come on guys.
-
BTW, would anyone be averse to me compiling stats, and other ******** in a 300 page binder report on why I am the best member in baseball especially when leading off a thread? I think I should. That is all. No its not, everyone who is typing needs to stop and read ahhcons post. That is great.

jesus, my last post was in response to someone who got bured in the time it took me to write it. sox fan in texas, i am glad you are in texas. here is why... if you ran the red sox i would be a sad man. Retaliation is bad idea. They have a plan in place for the future that doesn't have any "In case the yankees sign someone we used to have" clauses in it. There are no bail outs like that. The best way to succeed is to follow a plan and follow through with it and not jump the gun and over pay for a preston wilson and trade your pitching prospects for a miguel tejada if someone you wanted doesn't want you back. On that note, are you the kind of guy who might show up drunk and naked on a girls front lawn signing songs like "Do we really know what time it is" and throwing little pebbles at her window until her dad calls the police? Similar situations if you think about. Once again, im only partially responsible for all this stuff, contact my agent if you're angry after reading this.

Exactly. They signed another Bernie. If you don't recall, this year Bernie was somewhere between bad and worthy of a slap in public. If it weren't for the fact that he is the classiest man this side of barry white (this side of the grave) then he would have gotten one. Damon is not so classy and in four years you are going to wish he chose to keep the hair and bring his bad attitude and poor sportsmanship somewhere else. Damon is a great lead off hitter, but the end of his season was completely gum and glue and thats bad. He is a good player, but not a durable player despite any 'damon has played this many games and not missed this many' ******** someone might throw at me. If this was not his contract year, he would have sat down instead of playing some of those games at the end, perhaps even hitting the DL. He plays too hard to last much more than 2 seasons without injury. If the sox were not winning, they would have never put up with his crap. But he looked very pretty in our lineup for the last four years, but will only look so pretty for the next two in yours and his best days may be like his hair, gone. I'll take my draft pick, thank you and my jeremy reed if you don't mind. I'll keep my papelbons and lesters too, and who knows josh beckett might be useful now and then so I'll have him around too. Have fun with your senior citizens brigade, you might want to install a wheelchair ramp onto center field, bernie was complaining that he needed one this year. Damon will have that issue in a couple years too.

Damon hit .345 in the first half and .285 in the second half with huge dips in all other categories. This message has been brought to you by Andy Malone, if you're not into the whole brevity thing, feel free to contact our offices during business hours. We are not responsible for lack of stats, insight, or clothing that may come from a result of this posters laziness.

I think what will happen in the end is graff will be the best bench player in the majors, or one of them. He has 1st base exp, short exp, 3rd exp, we could be looking at the best utility guy in baseball. He knows going into this he won't be a starter, so we don't have a jay payton on our hands, Graff did this willingly, if playing mattered he would have rejected arbitration. This could be pointing to a Youkilis trade, who knows. This isn't a bad thing, the compensation picks don't matter too much, we didn't really lose anyone great this year (yet) so we can't expect to get great picks. a 3rd rounder for mueller is nice though, 3rd round is pretty good in baseball. I believe Papelbon was a third rounder. Oh well, whatever, this isn't a bad thing, he has experience all over the diamond, so hes welcome. I'm happy.

... thanks so much.

Hansen is a lock to be in the bullpen, i dont understand the apprehension on this guy, hes a complete stud, huge kid with a pin point 98 mph fastball and a slider that gammons said reminds him of lidge. lidge. brad lidge has arguably the best slider in the majors. this kid will be in the pen. him, seanez, timlin and mota makes a very nice set up crew, but I have the sneaking feeling that foulke will start the year setting up for either timlin or mota. edit, yeah how can you say everyone is pushing 40? first of all, you need veterans on a team, veteran presence is key, but look at this team right now dinardo arroyo, papelbon, hansen, delcarmen, and beckett, are all under 30, and mota clement and bradford under 35. This is not an old team by any stretch. Wakefield is a knuckleballer, knuckleballers can pitch forever and usually get better with age. Could explain his excellent year last year. He commanded his knuck last year like i've only seen him do it on rare occasions in past years. He's not old yet.
-
yeah? and guys don't struggle? relax on this guy, hes a stud. Did anyone else hear anything about him being shipped for coco? I heard it only on dirt dogs, everywhere else has been talking about clement for him straight up. I like that, reed and crisp are very comporable players, and if the sox would do a reed deal with clement, i dont see why crisp wouldn't be considered a steal at that price tag.
-
I don't see the sox making this move at all, like someone said earlier in the thread the sox would have to include lester. If they wouldn't include him in the beckett deal, why would they decide to include him in a deal for john garland?
-
well, i think i'd prefer snow/youk over petagine. I don't mind the idea of trading youk for some bullpen help and playing lowell at first base either. that could make me happy. andy marte in the majors.
-
He was overrated, but I think his stock is falling alittle bit too fast. He is a good ball player and he had one bad year adjusting to a big market team after playing for two teams that weren't that at all. He's a good ball player, if we get a pitcher or a pitching prospect with any kind of good reputation, i think that deal is a no brainer. Fills the damon gap, gives us production in return for Manny, and then we pull the trigger on a reed deal and we've stumbled onto a pretty decent team, albeit a very different team. Who knows, maybe we even sign Damon and have a seriously speedy team, maybe package nixon for a pitcher or 1st baseman, and clement for reed. That could make me happy. Does anyone know the exact terms of Beltrans contact?
-
Well scouts have given up on this guy all across baseball I read somewhere, but I haven't. I like him a lot. Ok, this is what I make of this deal. Lets assume that Manny and Damons future in Boston are intertwined. If one goes, the other stays. This trade could be prefacing a Ramirez trade rather than the sox letting Damon go. I know talks have heated back up for Tejada, I'm a fan of getting Tejada provided we don't give up any of our pitching prospects, I consider pitching to be more valuable than any bat, especially young pitching. Bats come a dime a dozen, but anyways... What if the sox have got that proposed three way deal down to the wire and its coming close, and what if they are preparing to trade for Reed to fill the outfield gap from manny. They could move nixon to left, and put reed in right, since nixon can't seem to stay healthy and the Fenway left field is among the smallest in the league. That would probably help him stay injury free as he wouldn't have to range as much, and Reed is quite rangy, he could handle the job. I'd be a fan of that, provided no pitching prospects leave the Red Sox.
-
I don't think this is about the salary. The sox could live with that, it only becomes about the salary if another team wants us to pay his way. This move is about trading a guy who supposedly at the moment does not want to be a red sox. Plain and simple. I would do it for beltran and a pitcher.

White Sox set to add Vazquez and say bye bye to El Duque
ksushi replied to riverside sluggers's topic in Other Baseball
I do think the white sox are close to going on a late 90's yankee caliber run. I do see the upside in the thome trade, but what made the yankees so good year after year was youth. I think trading Chris Young after trading Rowand makes no sense unless they have some center field prospect I'm unaware of. First, I think rowand is the hard nosed paul oniell esque player that could add some guts to this potential black and white machine. Thats one bad move, trading Chris Young away made no sense, even if you can justify dealing rowand. I think this team is armed well enough to make a serious push for the world series this season, but what happens after that is unclear right now. Mackowiac is a huge addition and so is vazquez, but they are short sighted additions. Mackowiac doesn't help you three years from now, although he is huge down the road. El Duque was big for the in the post season too. I dont think i got across what I wanted to, but either way I have to go do school work. Point of this post? The White Sox are crazy good, this year, and probably will be very competitive for years to come, but so will other teams. Dynasty? Not quite. Good team? Absolutley.
