  1. No because A-Rod has 20 game winning RBI and Ortiz has 19, A-Rod has won many games with his defense (4 in September) and Ortiz none. Another thing to consider is would Ortiz perform the way he is now if he had to play every game of the season in the field like A-Rod? I think he’d be sucking wind by July. Ortiz is huge for the Red Sox and no one has gotten more walk off’s this year but a DH doesn’t deserve the MVP unless his numbers are immensely better then anyone else.
  2. Great post, I came here to say that but you beat me to it!
  3. You still have the most dangerous lineup in Baseball. I won’t be optimistic until the Yankees go in to Fenway on the 30th up by 4 games.
  4. It’s silly to think that a player being a DH doesn’t factor in to MPV voting. Since some adjustments made early in the season A-Rod’s defense has been gold glove caliber. I can think of several plays that saved games for the Yankees, one was a throw over the base runner to cut him down at the plate against you guys in the ninth inning. He also can do so much more on the base paths then Ortiz. David Ortiz is a great player and not getting him was one of Cashman’s biggest mistakes but A-Rod has done so much more as a complete player this year. If both players continue on the same pace A-Rod should win hands down.
  5. Wow, you guys are really hard on a guy that had some huge hits for you in the post season. And as for Embree, he hasn’t been that bad. He’s hitting the mid 90’s consistently and he’s been good but only against lefties. I think he was overused in Boston because of the weak bullpen. He’s better then any lefty specialist we’ve had around here lately. He came in last night and got Nixon to ground into what should have been a double play.
  6. How does Mariano Rivera look like this? http://www.batcon.org/adoptabat/c-epowah.jpg Any more then David Ortiz looks like this? http://www.buffaloworks.us/images/big%20gunns%20gorilla%200020.jpg
  7. I think the players have started scoreboard watching, seeing this would have to leave a little pit in your belly. It shouldn't bother them but who knows?
  8. I can see the Sox being a little tight tonight after knowing about this Yankee win.
  9. Best to stay out of the right field bleachers, Yankee fans get a little nuts there. One other time I saw a Sox fan at a Yankee - O's game. He was all decked out in his Sox Garb shouting "I'm just here to see the Yanks lose", he started getting showered with beer. That was just stupid and I kind of think he was asking for trouble.
  10. It’s good to be optimistic but through the years of being a Yankee fan I’ve learned what it takes to get to the Promised Land. Pitching is the key; the only team in recent history to get there without great starting pitching was the 2002 Angels. That team made up for it with timely hitting and a lights out bullpen. I can’t understand how so many of you here think there’s nothing to worry about even after last nights terrible loss. On Son of Sam Horn they sound like they’re on a suicide watch. I am certainly not overconfident that the Yankees will make the playoffs. I have been mildly optimistic of the pitching lately, especially Shawn Chac?n. I think the Key will be Johnson, if he can start to pitch consistent and the other starters keep it up then we have a great chance.
  11. Wakefield is leading the starters in wins, ERA, innings pitched and is a close second in strike outs, and he kills the Yankees. Sounds like the ace to me.
  12. It was 10 in a row but the Red Sox went 34-12 from this point on for the rest of the season last year. Do you expect that kind of success with your pitching this year? The Red Sox team ERA is the worst it’s been since 1997, that was the year before Pedro arrived. Oddly enough Tim Wakefield was your Ace in 1997 like this year.
  13. I agree that it all comes down to wins and losses. I also agree with the philosophy that stats are like a lamp post to a drunk, you use them more for support then for illumination. One thing I have seen through the years being a Yankee fan is in the end you need pitching you can count on.
  14. An interesting stat for the month of August: Average runs allowed for Starting Pitcher. Yankees: 2.92 Red Sox: 4.27 Average runs allowed per game Yankees: 4.23 Red Sox: 6.45 Yankees record for August is 8-5 Red Sox record for August is 9-2 The Red Sox offense this month has been great even against good pitchers but this isn’t something you would want to count on especially in the postseason.
  15. I’m willing to admit the Yankees pitching is in not what they would want right now but your staff has given up 47 runs and 74 hits in the last seven games. You’re all taking like everything’s coming up rosy, and that was mostly against KC and Minnesota.
  16. Yankees are getting along on a wing and a prayer with their pitching now but the only hope I have of winning the division is from watching the RS games. It’s not going to come down to the team plays better, it will come down to the team sucks the least. Yankees have been real lucky with the fill-in pitchers but the only one that I think can continue to surprise everyone is Chac?n. Getting out of Colorado might be just what he needed. As for the Sox, you guys can’t feel confident going into the postseason with the staff you have now. You rarely get a good performance from your starters or your bullpen. Even in some of your wins the amount of runs they’ve been giving up to teams like TB, KC and Minn have been ridiculous. Without Schilling the Sox will go as far in the postseason as the Yanks would without Johnson. And do you really think if Schilling starts he will be anything like his old self. A lot of his saves have been nail biters. Yanks are in the same position; if RJ’s back doesn’t get better it won’t be pretty. As for Wells, he used to come up big in the big game but with his age he’s more likely to implode again. And if that happens in Boston then he’ll join the list with Buckner and Grady.
  17. My point was not to compare Pavano and Manny but to point out the hypocrisy of a Sox fan saying you should want someone off the team because the said they don’t want to be there. Furthermore this is coming from a blurb in the Daily news from an unnamed source. This isn’t a quote directly from the player.
  18. This is true; nobody can be compared to Manny. He is the most unique man to ever play baseball. I was in the Dominican Republic last year. They talked about Pedro like he was a God but when I asked about Manny they just said “he’s crazy”.
  19. This is just hearsay about Pavano but if it’s true maybe he’ll come back and perform like Manny doe’s when he says he doesn’t want to be in Boston.
  20. Dude, everyone you mention has an ERA under 4.50 except Proctor, Franklin and Embree. Those 3 pitched a total of 21 innings; the rest pitched over 600 innings. You don’t average them out all the same. What you did was take all the current pitchers and added their ERA together then divide it by the number of pitchers. That is not the ERA for all those pitchers. I don’t want to take the time to do the math exactly but if you take out the ERA of the pitchers that our not currently pitching the team ERA goes down. Your method of getting the ERA is ridiculous and I can’t explain it any simpler. I’m sure some other Sox fans on here understand that. Maybe if you hear it from them you’ll believe it.
  21. I thought you RS fans were a bunch of stat heads. You don’t get a ERA by taking the ERA from select pitchers and averaging them out, unless you want to inaccurately sway the stats in your favor.
  22. (2. Wells vs Mussina EDGE Wells) Please........get real. Bullpen (Timlin vs Gordon EDGE Timlin)That's a toss up, both get too much work and both have not been great recently (Delcarmen vs Sturtze EDGE Delcarmen) Who? You base that on the vast amount of big league experience he has. You try to make a point about the starters when Wright and Brown won't even be in the rotation. And you shouldn't even bring up the bullpen if you're a RS fan. RS are 2nd to the bottom only slightly ahead of Tampa Bay.
  23. New York Yankees: 4.66 Team ERA Boston Red Sox: 4.71 Team ERA And that's with 4 starting pitchers on DL
  24. Mariano Rivera: 0.97 ERA Keith Foulke: 6.23 ERA Curt Schilling: 6.23 ERA
  25. It cost the Yankees nothing to get Embree so there is no down side. Worst case he pitches poorly and we release him, best case he comes in the seventh and buzzes Ortiz then strikes him out with a 95 MPH fastball and Boston fans scream about letting him go and getting nothing back. That Yankee team wasn't playing like this one. The Sox easily could have lost 2 of 3 there and you guys have had a hard time with the D-rays for years.
