  1. Wild Card Weekend NFL Football Spread - NFL Playoff Game Dates 1/7 - 1/8, 2006 Date & Time............... Favorite................ Spread........... Underdog 1/7 4:30 ET.............. 2. Remember, that prize is at the end of the contest, not each round. The end is the Super Bowl.
  3. Although, the game, or games in this case, would end up with 0 points ( push, game thrown out ) in the event the spread was tied. It would have affect on reducing the pool of players to an eventual winner. From any applied statistics course, if you decrease the number of choices in a non-factual situation ( ie. choices made on assumptions ) the probabilty of chosing the correct cumulative answers increases. Simply put the odds of people being tied after the first round would increase. The same effect would occur if everyone in the contest picked the same outcome for one or more games ( it wouldn't matter who won, because every one would either all win or loose thus cancelling the game ). One way of correcting this effect is to increase the size of the participant pool. In theory, if the pool size were largest enough, there would be at least one winner who picked all games correctly ( because all permutations would have been covered, the same as a grid contest where there are 100 choices and 100 participants ). This is one of the reasons that I encourage a large number of participants ( another is to have more members having some fun ). Statistically, I can't prove it, by there seems to be few ties against the spread. This amount seems to significantly decrease in the playoffs. Remember the spread is issued by Vegas, ( on ties they make no money ). Also the spreads that I post are from Wed. or Thurs. These may not the final spreads that people bet on. Okay, back to the question, Arod2212 makes a valid point, I will leave it the as is for now. My primary reason is that, most of the picks are already in and I don't want to cause any confusion. Personally, I think people will be suprised how the point system works. If I think there's a problem with even point spreads after this week, I'll adjust them.
  4. Correct me if I wrong, but I think the same was also true for Trot a couple of years before. I also remember Trot acted as his own agent.
  5. Okay guys, the Board has spoken. The choice is format # 2 ( tthe one based on points ). Here are the rules : ....You must have 10 posts, all Mods are elligable ....There must be at least 8 participants ....You must make picks in the first playoff round and the Super Bowl ....All picks are made using the spread ....The winner is decided by total points accumulated ( Super Bowl Total pts. if tie ) ....Points : win=1 pt, tie= 0 pt, loss= -1 pt ....Use the template provided and bold your picks The Prize : $ 200 Wild Card Weekend NFL Football Spread - NFL Playoff Game Dates 1/7 - 1/8, 2006 Date & Time............... 6. Based on responses, the board has indicated that format #2 is the choice. I will get to work to post the rules and the odds shortly.
  7. I take that as #2.
  8. Sounds good to me. PS : You haven't indicated which format you prefer.
  9. I ran grid contests for years for the Super Bowl, they can be fun and profitable for the winners. But the down side is they'e for one game and it's a pain filling 100 squares even in person.
  10. How about a nice set of wind chimes ? They sway in the wind..
  11. You assume wrong. There are no fees. If there are prizes, they will be provided by me.
  12. If you win, you could always donate it !
  13. Back to the point of the thread. Jim not only managed to alienate himself with the Boston media, but a significant portion or the national media. You can either salute him as a proud athlete that held to his beliefs, or a stupid son of a bitch. It really depends on a point of view. If his stats were over whelming, he's in. Obviously, his stats are not, they're marginal. He must therefor relie on his popularity with the voting members of the media ( the very people he pissed off ). If you want a raise, you don't piss off your boss. I'd like to see him get in, but I don't think he'll get in until he qualifies as an "old timer".
  14. Both formats would be week by week. This is due to the fact that both are based on the spread and the spread will change every week ( for obvious reasons injuries, location, weather, etc ). I thought of the bracket method, but as you stated, people could and would be eliminated early. Prize or not ?
  15. I think he'd qualify more as a cactus. But I get your point ( sorry bad pun ).
  16. Thanks for the quick response. I assume that's a vote for format #1 with prizes ?
  17. I've been busy with computer maintenance and software for tax season, so I haven't been around. With the upcoming post season play-offs and eventual Super Bowl, the previous format for prizes and picks is not relevent. Picking just four games, then two wouldn't be very challenging, as there would be many ties. I was hoping that some of you bright guys and gals would offer some suggestions. I searched, but didn't see any. So I'm thinking of several of options : First : Is this just going to be for fun and prizes or just for fun ? It would make a difference as to which format. Second : The type of format. Format Type 1 : This would be a format similar to the Skins ( golf ) . Whoever is going to enter must do so at the beginning, meaning this week, you can't join in a week or two latter. You'd have to have 10 posts or more and there must be at least 8 entrants. You would have to pick the four games this weekend against the spread. Asumming there are at least 8 or more entrants ( hopefully more ), then if there is a clear winner a prize is awarded, if there is no clear winner, the prize and the next week's prize are combined to form a larger prize ( example if the original prize for week 1 was for $ 50, it would be added to $ 50 for week 2, thus making the second week total $ 100 ), all of the original participants would be start again in week 2 with the a clean slate. This would continue until there is a clear winner. If there is a clear winner before the Super Bowl, the winner would be paid the amount in the pool, and the pool would start again and continue until there is another winner, etc. Eventually, we'll reach the Super Bowl with whatever pool has accumulated. At this time, a final winner will be determined. This will be accomplished by a combination of pick and total points scored. Clearly this format favors the use of prizes. Format Type 2 : This format will also be picking against the spread and use a point system. The point system would be as follows : one point ( a +1 ) for a win and minus point for a loss ( -1 ) for each game. Once again you must be entered from the beginning and the other stipulations of 10 posts and at least 8 entrants would apply. The winner would be determined at the end of the Super Bowl. The winner would be total points accumulated. If there is a tie then the total points scored in the Super Bowl would be the tie breaker. This format could be for a prize or not. In the case of both formats, as long as you enter this weekend, it allows you to miss a week's picks without being eliminated. This could help or hurt you, but it will allow for the "oops factor" ( I forgot , was too busy, etc. ). So clearly , I need to get some quick input to determine if it's worth doing, and if so what format. As always, my primary concern is to have as many participants as possible having fun. So please give me some feedback as soon as possible so that I can set it up. My appologies for the short notice.
  18. Good stuff One Red Seat. You might want to copy, paste and post into the terms and defenitions thred. BTW, if the EE career does pan out you could always go into a career in taxation.
  19. No problem, its an inherent problem with copy and pasting.
  20. I didn't either.
  21. I know what you mean. My guess is, most of them have either calmed down or been banned.
  22. That's exactly right. You have to submit your application and pay dues and to have any chance have an advocate to get you in, maybe.
  23. Thanks, I appreciate it.
  24. Could someone else post the matchups next week, just for fun. Then post the results. I really have to load, down load ( up dates ), debug, and do equipment rehab for my tax practice. As far as play-offs I have yet to figure out a simplist format that people can or would follow and that I'd have the time to administer. Any suggestions PM me. Thanks guys.
