There is a major component missing here. That is the figure being reported maybe correct. But it is probably based on the information furnished to MLB. This would include the obvious of ticket sales, concessions, and revenue from broadcast fees, etc. Then expenses such as salary, operationg, debt service, luxury tax, revenue sharing, etc. are deducted to determine a profit or loss. The major difference, is that the Yankees and Red Sox both have majority ownership in their major broadcasters. The Yanks with the YES network and the Sox with NESN. For accounting purposes, only the fees that are charged to the network are included in their income ( for MLB ) not the profit derived from the ownership of the networks. Its an accounting technique.

Actually, if the Jets were favored by 6, you Took the Jets giving 6, and the score was 16-10 Jets, then its a tie ( also known as a push ) meaning no bet. If the Jets only win by 4, you would loose. Basically the spread is developed by Vegas in an attempt to even out the difference between a favorite and an underdog by giving points to the underdog in an attempt to get the betting public to bet on a game. The idea is to have an equal amount bet on both teams. In this case the sports book ( or bookie ) can't loose. This is due to the fact that they charge vigorish ( which is a percent applied to the amount of the bet, kind of like a commission ). In otherwords, if you bet $ 100 and loose you pay $ 110 ( assuming the vigorish is 10% ) , if you win, you get the $ 100 that you bet. If in this example a book gets $ 20,000 bet on each team, he can loose. He'll ( they ) will either make $ 2,000 or there is no bet ( if the spread is tied ).

Its simple. The spread is the amount of points the a team is favored by. For instance, Indy was favored by 8 points. This means if you took Indy with the spread, Indy would have to win by more than 8 for you to win. With the score being 26-7 you would have won. If someone had picked Pittsburgh they would have received 8 points, but lost.
