Sean McAdam today is reporting that the Payton move had been planned for some time, but that the Red Sox needed to wait for Bradford to come off the DL. Payton forced the Red Sox hand on Wednesday night when he blew up at Tito in the dugout after being inserted as a defensive replacement for Damon in the sixth spot in the order (Millar's spot) with Olerud, a defensive replacement for Millar, going into the game in Damon's spot.
Given the situation, it sounds like the team handled things right by DFAing Payton rather than keep him around the clubhouse while waiting for Bradford to get off the DL I could see one of the old regime making this thing into a bigger deal than it really is by keeping Payton around and either not playing him or doing something equally insulting to show him that they hold all the cards. Theo got Payton out of their before the press even had the story and did what is right for everyone all around. I think it's indicative of a gigantic difference in the way this team is run compared to teams of the past.
With Myers and Bradford the Sox will have a lefty-righty one/two punch if the major leagues ever decides to abolish overhand pitching.
