1. KAPOW. Pena's having a hell of a year.
2. Torre must be going through fits right now with two binkies in Proctor and Villone. That's probably a two inning decision.
3. Wiggington is amazingly inbred looking. People in WVA think he looks f***ed up.
4. Wiggington, he of the 27 chromosomes and hippo like speed, gets caught trying to stretch a standard single into a double. They are finding ways to give this game away.
5. What a waste. f***ing stupid. And then the DP.
6. It's not the pitch called, it's the location.
7. f***ing "Massing"-Hill.
8. Guys, give Mike a break. He's had to wait a whole 11 days since he last pitched, so he's not on his normal routine. Then add it that it's 1.45 degrees warmer than he likes, and the humidity is 2% low for his taste. Oh, and the hotel restaurant ran out of his favorite syrup. He's got a lot going on upstairs dealing with all these issues, so he's not going to be a sharp as you might hope.
9. I think SP is #1 on the priority list. A bat would be nice, but there is talent in this lineup. We've still not seen them all click for more than a game or two. They'll score, but they can't have chumps after Beckett and Dice. Wake is a half-chump. Schilling might be a chump. Lester would be a chump this year. Gabbard will probably peak as a chump-lite. We need another starter to be a favorite headed into the postseason.
10. I can't believe you guys would hit him 5th if he came here. I love Papi, but ARod is the most complete hitter in baseball. He hits 3rd, Ortiz 4th, Manny 5th.
11. But his deadline with Matsuzaka didn't have a pot of gold at the end the rainbow. If that deadline passed, Matsuzaka turned into a pumpkin and wouldn't be a free agent for two more years. Sure, the Lions could have posted him again, but why would they let him after he took their lottery ticket away? With ARod, the deadline holds several different suitors. I don't think there's any way Boras lets that opportunity pass up, and I don't think ARod is so fond of NY to go against his agent. I agree, when you throw in the Texas money, nobody will approach the Yankees in terms of AAV. I also tend to think there are more than a couple of teams that will go for a longer contract than what the Yankees will extend him for. If it's money, the winner will be total amount, not the AAV winner, because it's guaranteed money and the possibility of an injury exists.
12. I have my doubts about the Sox going that hard after him. I mean, one of the hiccups in the trade was that they wanted to reduce what he was already getting paid. Now, three years later (and ARod 3 years older), they are going to pay him more? Consider me skeptical. This isn't to say I don't think they should. He's the best player in the game and would put up video game numbers at Fenway, but I don't know if they will. It will be an interesting offseason once he opts out.
13. No mention of "arsenal"? I feel cheated.
14. After almost a month into the Spinners '07 season, Kalish is ripping the cover off the ball and showing some speed on the bases. Pretty good stuff from a 19 y/o.
PA|AB|H|2B|3B|HR|RBI|BA|OBP|SLG|BB|SO|HBP|SB|CS 103|86|32|4|1|3|13|.372|.476|.547|16|11|1|18|3
Signs of an advanced approach (.100+ IsoD, 16/11 BB/K) are nice to see too.
15. Good time for something in the gap from MM.
16. You holding that line now? He's another in a long line of BJay schmucks who play like Mays against us.
17. Is it wrong of me to want Hill's ACL to crap out the next time he kneels down to blow his life partner? It's not rational, but I can't stand that f***er.
18. I will note this. I have seen it suggested that triples should just be counted as doubles as they are a rare event for the typical player and only frequently happen for the speedy. I can accept that. However, speed is a tool, and it certainly leads to runs, so if the goal is to find the most realistic model possible - which I think Lwts does - then 3Bs should be a separate IV.
19. That's not what was posted above. Singles get one point, doubles get two. And the notion that every double is just circumstantial over a single is crazy. Sure, there are plenty that fall into that category, but for a whole team over a whole season (ie a large sample), I'll bet money there's significant correlation to quality of contact in batted ball types to XBH's.
20. Absolutely. It's a linear regression, and typically they will use 5-year weighted values to reduce the impact of variance.
21. The run system isn't new, it's called linear weights. Each possible event at the plate has an impact on runs scored and the weighting of each event is determined from the team stats for the league each year. The equation for each team looks like this: 1B + 2B + 3B + HR + BB + HBP + SB + SF + SH - OUTS - HIDP = Runs That's 11 independent variables going into 1 dependent variable. You have enough teams in each league (AL and NL - since the rules are different) to determine the weights each year for the league by setting up a system of equations solving for each event's weighting. The concept is about 2 or 3 years old, and it would shock me if every team's statistical department wasn't using it.
22. I think you have the walks transposed, because it's impossible for Saito to have a higher H/9 and BB/9, but a lower WHIP.
