I think the point is that the Yankees could a) use someone capable of league average pitching at the back of their rotation, and allowed a team ahead of them to improve.
I don't think anyone here is thinking Byrd is any great shakes. He's a league average pitcher over his career, just like Wakefield is, who just went down, and something Buchholz is not capable of right now. Make no mistake, this improves the Sox right now, and the Yankees did nothing to stop it from happening. It would have improved the Yankees too. While I don't agree with the sentiment about waving the white flag, I think those two facts are its genesis.
