  1. It would be a PR disaster for the Nationals if they didn't draft and sign him. He is the consensus #1 talent in this draft, and not drafting him will only be seen as being cheap. The signing bonus will break the record, he'll sign a MLB deal, and he'll be pitching in Washington by the end of this year. His talent will just blow away lower levels, and since there's concern about injury, they might as well get whatever they can out of him before his arm gives out. On the subject of "will he slip x number of places" there's nothing to see here, folks. Please disperse. Same thing goes for that HS catcher. He'll be #1 in the 2011 draft. Book it. The only way the Sox get him is if they pull off a 60 win season in 2010.
  2. Earl Weaver, but he's no longer a viable option.
  3. They did that primarily through outstanding situational hitting. Even with excellent situational hitting, they still managed to score a handful of runs less than their theoretical RC. I've checked the last few years, and their RS is consistently under their RC. Best manager in baseball my ass.
  4. f***in' hilarious. Dude, it's not the total number of games for each team. Here's the over/under .500 for each division (per your predictions): ALE: +60 ALC: +44 ALW: +70 NLE: +56 NLC: +72 NLW: +64 You don't see the problem here?
  5. But I thought Melky was your homeslice, the Man? How quickly the truth about his ability has eroded your irrational love, and now it's on to Jackson. Hope, for your sake, his granny in ST notwithstanding, that there is more merit to this flavor of the week.
  6. Going off memory from my childhood here, but I'm pretty sure he's thinking of Blyleven's teammate, Joe Niekro, who got caught by the TV camera trying to throw away an emory board when asked to empty his pockets by the ump.
  7. I agree that Johnson was not the central focus of your OP. I also think it's a gross mischaracterization to call a two word reply a rant. The brevity of his reply was befitting the importance you assign to that individual in your original point.
  8. Wow, you really like to play the victim card when these are messes of your own making. Nobody went postal, he just said Johnson sucks, which, to this point, not many reasonable people would object to, but you don't fall in that group I guess. No, rather than leave well enough alone, you felt the need to explain yourself and dug the hole deeper. The resulting replies were warranted. You aren't a victim, so just stick to the lovely filth, Dennis.
  9. Bench from the MLB, but several of the Negro Leagues players who transitioned over to the MLB say Gibson was the best ball player, period, they've ever seen. It's unfortunate he was never given a chance to play at the highest level.
  10. The one year Cashman stuck his neck out and went with unproven kids, they finished in 3rd and he quickly turtled his head back into his shell. You say he learned a lesson from that and will have a safety net in the future? What do you envision the composition of this net to be? Other kids? That's more of the same issue that created the problem. Vets? What vet of any capability is going to sign on to be the fallback plan for some unproven kid? So, he's left with a choice, he either sticks his neck out again, or he signs vets (the status quo) and then the kids are the backup plan. Whatever rumors come out about him hating this job, his actions speak volumes. He keeps coming back. I would too to be the highest paid GM in baseball. I think he'll operate from a perspective of keeping this job that, despite the rumors, he apparently wants.
  11. Why is this in the Yankee forum? Yes, he's former Yankee prospect, an overrated one at that, but he's current Pirates prospect. This belongs in General Baseball.
  12. Blyleven has 2 WS rings, and his postseason record is a good one. Of course, he doesn't have any iconic moments in his postseason record, and he really wasn't the leader of his teams' chances either time. I also disagree that postseason excellence shouldn't be assigned as much weight. It is the Hall of "Fame", and postseason excellence makes a player famous more than just about anything. It's when everyone is watching. This isn't to say that career nothings who had many postseason chances in supporting roles and did well in those chances should gain entry. No, you need to have a regular season resume, IMO, to get your postseason looked at. Curt makes that cut, and his postseason gets him in.
  13. There, I fixed it for you and saved a boatload of space. BTW, idiot, Clemens legacy is that of the greatest RH pitcher in history if his off field trangressions didn't put a shadow of doubt on the legitimacy of his on field performance. The two are inexorably linked. Nice try, but try bouncing your idea off someone with dash of sense next time before you post.
  14. Hey, you're the one acting like a juvenile. Don't fault me for pointing it out. Take away the team and the name, and here's what you are left with. Player A won a championship in the last season he played. He came back to play another year, but he got hurt and the injury ended his playing career. This isn't going out on top? Only to a child who thinks Player A is a big meanie.
  15. I didn't expect you to agree, hence me calling your post juvenile. This response is no different. Dojji is right. Move forward into the future, and nobody, except for a few with an agenda against him (this means you), will remember or care that he didn't pitch in '08. BBRef lists his last year as 2007, and his postseason stats include a win in the WS that year. This is the legacy that will survive. Like it, don't like it? I don't care, that's just what will happen.
  16. Go out like what? The last baseball game he played in, he was the winning pitcher for his team in the WS that they went on to win. That's going out on top. Given the tenor of the rest of your juvenile post, I hardly think you are happy he's going out a champion.
  17. Why Arizona? He spent 8.5 years in Philly. Then he's in Arizona for 3.5 years before spending 4 in Boston. If it's a time of service thing, then there's a script P on his head. If it's a legacy thing, it's a B. The 2004 postseason is what probably gets him over the hurdle of not compiling stats.
  18. Yeah, people who say crazy s*** just to upset the apple cart are douche bags. Kind of reminds me of someone on this message board.
  19. Before he coached at Providence, he was at George Mason. This was when I was 11 or so, the mid 80's. GMU was about 5 miles from where we lived, right near the high school I went to. I went to his BBall camp one summer. Even as an adolescent, I could tell he wasn't one of the smartest people in the room. Hell of a recruiter, though.
  20. I realize you were joking, but I also feel there's a bit of truth in that post, and no, it's not about the refs. You said yourself you missed the games, and you've also said you go to other boards for sports coverage. I do too. The sentiment is there every single time Duke wins a close game, every call is a gift, legitimate or not. It gets a little stale. Tell me you don't feel the same way about the UConnvict jokes?
  21. I am holding a baseball contest, too. I want to know who can shove a baseball bat up their ass the farthest. I have the results for everyone but you. So far, Gom is in the lead. Your turn.
