    Regardless, the GIants are going to "start and end" (or whatever) conversations for a guy like Cain for their eventual backup catcher, which is what he would be. He might be required as part of a package, but he's not going to be the focal point for them. He might have more sway with Seattle, honestly.

    Is there any scenario whereby the Sox are players for either Prince Fielder or Albert Pujols? Would there be any way that, by moving Youkilis and releasing Ortiz, they would be players for one of them? It isn't entirely far-fetched (though I acknowledge it is unlikely). PROS: * Obvious pros. Imagine the lineup. CONS: * Less positional flexability * Less financial flexability * Another longterm, potentially hindering deal. Just wondering... it's early in the offseason.

    Right. The shiny new toy... Ellsbury is a very good player, possibly one of the best in the league. But he needs to do it for a few years first. Lincecum is consistently one of the best pitchers in the league. Of course, I worry about LIncecum's longevity and his stats have dipped a bit the past two years. I actually think that a trade for Cain would be wise. I doubt San Francisco is wanting to get rid of him, but moving an established guy and a pitching prospect might get it done. I realize he's only signed for another year, but perhaps the Sox could resign him longterm. He's still young, so that would be worthwhile.

    You are patently untrustworthy my friend. I'm waiting for all of the "FRANCONA SUCKS" posters to show up... so far the tone is more muted than I thought it would be, given the dislike fans have had for Francona. I don't think it's a great thing that he's leaving. Francona had strengths and weaknesses, but I think overall his strengths were hidden because they were behind the scenes while his weaknesses just happened to be the most public aspects of his game.

    Devil's Advocate: what about the above makes him a good potential manager? Is being scary any more likely to get you a call or get the umps to reverse anything? Is he going to go Don Zimmer on Ivan Nova?

    They're both a lot cheaper than VMART or Beltre. Don't get too pissed. For me, the goal will be to open some slots for younger players to work their way into while reducing costs. The hunger that these young players bring is pretty impressive. Youk still has it, actually, so obviously I wouldn't hate having him around.

    My thoughts exactly. All the more reason to think about releasing Ortiz and trading Youkilis and anyone else who is hard to get along with or who makes it harder for guys like Pedroia, Ellsbury, or Lester to do their jobs well

    Why would he be relatively cheap because Hoyer is at the helm? Seems unlikely to me, if he's any good. I like the idea though. Often, teams will give managers an opportunity to interview with another team. If a manager doesn't want to be with his current team, it does't do the franchise a whole lot of good to hold onto him. In that sense, you could be right.

    Are there any managers who currently command the respect that a typical Japanes manager commands, while also using sabermetric principals? I love the fundamentals of the Japanese game, but not the approach. Also, think Joe Torre would be interested? I always liked Torre and I would love to see him come back to stick it to the Yankees. I know, I know, most people didn't like how he managed, but wouldn't Henry be MUCH easier for him to work with than Stein...

    I was just thinking about Bobby Valentine as I finished writing my last post. No thanks. Mostly it got me thinking how weird it will be to see a new MGR on this club. I can pretty well anticipate what Tito is going to do, when he is going to come out and argue, etc., but a new guy will be a learning curve unto himself.

    Thanks for the list MNSoxChief. I don't know who is available or what the Sox are looking for. It's really hard to know what they want. If they go for more of a "ra! ra!" kind of guy they might be sacrificing some of the brains/analytical stuff that Tito and Theo bring to the table. If they go analytical then they might miss the clubhouse leadership that they need. Will be only a handful of people who have both, and I suspect most of them have jobs currently.

    For the record, I didn't mean you were "f***ing pathetic". Just to clarify. We've co-habitated this board long enough to know we don't have a beef! I'm just a bit frustrated with the level of analysis and retrospect on this board right now.

    They can't just throw s*** at a wall and hope it sticks. They need to get someone really established. This is probably the 2nd or 3rd most coveted managerial position in the sport right now. There should be some serious interviews...

    Seriously? The guy is leaving the Sox and people are more interested in seeing a lame ass camera phone picture of the guy drinking. f***ing pathetic. His tenure in Boston deserves more than that.
