  1. iOrtiz it is unbelievable to me that AVG is your choice for offensive measures. It simply dies not correlate with runs as well as OBP or SLG or about a half-dozen other metrics that are undoubtedly used by every front office in all levels of professional baseball. No wonder you don't care for what Theo Epatein had to offer. Oh well, to each their own I suppose. You write a passionate defense of it.
  2. Not to nit pick but I don't see much need for reducing it to a single stat. Seems simplistic. ERA+ tells one thing, WHIP another, Dips or FIP another, and k/bb and BABIP another. By looking at a combination one can get a clear picture of what that player did.
  3. $28.6m. Almost 5 times as valuable to his team as Lackey was every time he took the mound. That sounds about right.
  4. That's ERA. I noted that not only was his ERA the worst in the league this year, it was the 3rd worst for a minimum of 160 IP since 2004. That wasn't my question. Metrics that actually take other things into account don't list him as the worst in the league. ERA is akin to AVG: they have invented other stats because it doesn't tell the whole story. FIP and xFIP for instance. According to those numbers Lackey was pretty unlucky this year. They don't say he was good, because he wasn't. FIP and WAR both list him near the bottom of the league, but not at the bottom. I guess it is safe to say that people list him as worst in the league because of ERA and ERA alone. No other numbers back that up. Regardless, what a loser he is.
  5. Doubront still has some promise IMO. You're right about Bowden. You're probably right about prospects as trading chips too. The hard part is moving poor prospects for good players, rather than good prospects for good players. Nobody cried when they moved Masterson and Hagadone for V-Mart--few probably even remember they had them--but those guys would have been useful this year. It's a crap shoot. Do you even remember when Kelly Shoppach and George Kottaras were prospects? Nobody thought they would be any good, but they're good enough to be starting playoff games on good playoff teams. They don't need to be stars to be worth a lot. Sometimes they are just to add depth. It doesn't do much good for the Sox to trade a Felix Doubront for a Ted Lilly or Aaron Harang.... the difference between them is mitigated by the extra cost of the veteran, IMO.
  6. Marmol is not a good closer.
  7. This is probably all true, and indicates the need for a change. However, you shouldn't take being a hands-off manager as being the same as a "bad" manager (not that you are, I just want to clarify). On a high-functioning team, management should be able to be hands off. They should trust at their core that things are being taken care of below them. Employees are being appropriately responsible and are policing one another as needed, hopefully mostly by leading by example and setting high standards internally. That's what any manager should want. The fact that Tito wasn't able to become a drill-sergent when the team fell out of control is less a reflection on his abilties as a manager and more a reflection of the needs of this particular group. They clearly need more hand holding, more rules, etc., It's the signs of a poorly functioning team, and it's sad IMO. Too much trust did Tito in. That sucks.
  8. Yep. Nobody I know is allowed to drink at work. Nobody. Nobody I know makes 10m+ a year. Nobody. I realize that their job is hard and stressful. They aren't merely playing a boys game for money. However, on nights off, when they are not pitching, they are literally watching a boys game for money. Sit on the f***ing bench. Sorry if you get bored, I get bored at work too. I just have to deal with it. Tough s***. While reports may have been overblown, the fact that even Lester says it was something they probably shouldn't have been doing is reflective of the larger problem. Not everything the team was doing went toward the greater good.
  9. Unless he could be assured of that I don't see why anyone would wait around. Something like 20m to be president of a noble and well-known franchise? If he wins in Chicago he's got a ticket to Cooperstown. I don't see this as a difficult calculation for him, regardless of the state of the Sox. The public perception of this team is like a pendulum. Right now it is swinging strongly to the "sky is falling" end of things, but Theo and even most reasonable posters here know that this team is much better than "sky is falling". The club isn't in complete disarray, they have some things to take care of but can you name 5 other franchises that you would have more confidence in moving forward from this point?
  10. Absolutely right. 2015? Seriously? With the best offense in baseball and Lester, Buchholz and Beckett all in their primes? The "bridge year" was 2010, and that brought this team Crawford and Gonzalez to go with an already solid club. There are minor tweaks to be made, but with some better conditioning and a bit of fortune/luck/chemistry (whatever you want to call it) down the stretch I don't see how this team is worse than the Cardinals or Tigers or other teams that were still playing in the LCS.
  11. This is the type of report I'm glad to see. I hope that some of these guys got a serious wake-up call with the September collapse. They can complain as much as they want about the media blowing things out of proportion, but so far none of them have said the fans are off base being pissed off and looking for some reason, any reason, why this happened. Fans have every right to do that. So does ownership. Hopefully this makes Lester more aware of how his actions on the field, on the bench and in the clubhouse will eventually come back to him--good, bad or indifferent. Lots of incentive for them to be good. I don't care if Beckett comes out and says something, as long as he gets his s*** done next year.
  12. Wow, your 20/20 hindsight is phenomenal! Can we critique Theo? Yes Should we want better moving forward? Sure Should we pretend that we never liked having him here? f*** no It comes off like the boyfriend who got dumped saying "I never liked her anyway". It's pathetic. I'll take my comments off the air...
  13. I wouldn't dismiss Matt Barnes as a SP option in a year or two.
