  1. Let's just be honest about who Matsuzaka is, can we? He's frustrating, he's not as good as we would have hoped. He's also a career 46-29 pitcher with a 4.28 ERA with a 107 ERA+. He isn't the world's worst pitcher and we're stuck with him, so it may be best to just deal with it. Bitching about it isn't going to change anything.
  2. To speak to how crazy this season is, Youkilis has a .426 OBP. That's higher than he's had in any complete season before. That's with a .182 average. It is reasonable to hope that Youkilis gets on base LESS than he has so far, if it means he hits the ball more often. That's crazy. And proof that we're still well within the domain of the dreaded small sample size.
  3. So you're missing the point of the thread....
  4. Three of the teams that have made it to the playoffs in the past did so in a year that ended in a "1". 1951, 1991, 2001. This is 2011.
  5. Can you read thread titles? Apparently not.
  6. We have a bunch of threads bitching and moaning. I've done my part too. Here's a thread for reasons to be optimistic. My first entry: 2001 Oakland A's. Started the season 2-9 Ended the season 102-60 and won the Wildcard* 1914 Boston Braves Started the season 2-9 Ended the season 94-59 and won the World Series 1935 Detroit Tigers Started the season 2-9 Ended the season 93-58 and won the World Series 1991 Minnesota Twins Started the season 2-9 Ended the season 95-67 and won the World Series 1974 Pittsburgh Pirates Started the season 2-9 Ended the season 88-74 and won the Division* 1951 New York Giants Started the season 2-9 Ended the season 98-59 and won the NL Pennant* *These teams started 2-10 and still did fine!
  7. I was tempted to make a game thread too, just to mess with the Mojo. Seems like you had the same thought. Just f***ing win. Even bad teams are better than this.
  8. This team is really hurting my soul right now. Even BAD Red Sox teams aren't this bad. It is totally and absolutely incomprehensible. I'm still confident that there will be a point where they are on a roll and everyone says that people have to watch out for the Red Sox, but at 7 games below .500 and 2-9 there is simply no explaination. There is no ascention to the mean happening here. Everything that could be going wrong seems to go wrong, in various combinations, to utterly destroy anything that is going right. Good pitching? No offense. Decent offense? Bad pitching. It just sucks and is really hard to watch. I don't know how to be a fan of this team, and I was so excited about them two weeks ago. Looking at Redsox.com and seeing advertisements for tickets rings really, really hollow right now.
  9. This thread has become really immature. Dice has been bad, but he's a 5th starter and it isn't the end of the world. I'm as disappointed as the next guy, but I don't see reasons to resort to "Dice-Gay". What are you, 10?
  10. I just don't know... Bonds is the one I'm most inclined to put in despite his usage. I don't know to what degree Mac was aided by steroids in his career. He has very impressive OBP numbers throughout, which definitely is a point in his favor. He also had real injury problems and although the back isn't specifically aided by steroids, power numbers later in one's career often are--and he certainly had those. It isn't worth arguing too much about. I'm sure we would all agree it's a s***** discussion to even have to have and that's not because we disagree, it's because of the difficulties raised by PEDs.
  11. A lot of players have the goods to get in on their own if they keep up high levels of production over a long career. Through his first 10 seasons McGwire had a 154 OPS+, which ties him exactly with Manny's career average (Mac finished with a 162 OPS+). If he didn't use and stayed healthy for another few seasons he's in. Unfortunately, McGwire was playing with Canseco who has said he was using heavily during those years, so it seems possible that McGwire was too. I'm very suspicious about a) when McGwire started using and whether if he had not used injuries would have derailed his career too early.
  12. I thought that catch Crawford made against the wall yesterday to end the ining was a potential game saver. Just sayin.
  13. While I agree in principle, I don't necessarily see guys like McGwire and Sosa as HOF players without the edge of steroids. There are very good hitters in every era who aren't at the caliber needed to get into the Hall. I think Bonds, Manny and Clemens had the tools that probably would have had them as HOF worthy. Bonds and Manny definitely in, but was Clemens in the HOF if he had retired soon after going to Toronto? Would he have had the longevity needed? It just gets really hazy for me. I would much rather that these players get in (and I'm a Manny convert, having watched him for so long, I think he was truly an all-time great) but there were guys who became all-time greats perhaps due to nothing other than their steroid usage like Sosa and maybe McGwire (when was he definitely NOT on steroids? Rookie year? First few years?) I just don't know... McGwire and Sosa seem more suspect to me than Bonds and Manny... but it is completely subjective which just sucks!
  14. Litmus test for baseball knowledge in my opinion. The only correct answer is Pedro. Nobody should need ORS to point that out... he should save his neuronal activity for other things.
  15. These are wise words indeed. My one strongest hope is that the team bounces back, gets a chip on their shoulder and that the early adversity they are facing now will pay off down the road. Gonzo and Crawford are looking a bit better, and I have no doubts about the core of the lineup being able to play in the Boston pressure cooker. Last year it seemed that one of the best parts about the (otherwise frustrating) club is that they outperformed their expectations after a rough patch of injuries and call-ups. I'm optimistic that this team will get it's swagger back and be able to not have another stretch of baseball this bad for the rest of the year. We would MUCH rather have this s*** for the first few games than down the stretch or in the Playoffs.
  16. Win. I will most likely be at work. I wish to not watch, hear that they won, and watch the highlights later. If this team goes 0-6 I propose an end to all posts on talksox until they win. Ultimate silence mojo.
  17. I appreciate all the attempts at optimism, and of course they're going to turn this around. Let's just hope that team-wide cold streaks can turn into team-wide hot streaks. It should happen. Very few players are hitting the ball well at all, not getting good wood on the ball and there have been very few breaks. Plus, that play between Youk and Tek tonight is inexcusable. If anyone ever wondered why you practice touching the base and yelling "tag!!", even if it seems unnecessary, that's why it is done. From little league on. Inexcusable from such veterans and the type of thing you see going wrong for a team in a freefall.
  18. ... otherwise you would see me a lot more concerned about Scutaro's .000 OBP! Clearly I'm not saying that's where this team will land.
  19. I wasn't making a point about large sample size. I was pointing out that it isn't Scutaro and Salty that are responsible for the losses, and if there weren't losses nobody would be complaining about the offensive output of high defensive-spectrum positions. Does that make sense?
  20. If the rest of the lineup were producing then the issue wouldn't be about Scutaro and Salty. OBP so far: .438 Youkilis .333 Pedroia .313 Ortiz .294 Gonzalez .286 Drew .286 Lowrie .278 Ellsbury .250 Cameron .250 McDonald .231 Salty .188 Crawford .000 Scutaro Only one player has performed at or above his expected OBP and that's Youk. It's a pretty crude measurement overall, but it is indicative of the way the bats have come out. I'm not that worried overall, but I don't think that history smiles on teams that start 0-4 to start the season.
