  1. This is somewhat off topic but.....does anyone think a prospects age is of extreme importance to Theo Epstein?? Jonathan Papelbon (24 when brought up) Manny Delcarmen (24 this season) Jermaine Van Buren (25) Adam Stern (25 last season when brought up) Lenny DiNardo (25 last season when brought up) Kevin Youkilis (25 when brought up) ...the only exceptions I can think of off the top of my head include Craig Hansen last season (very limited time), Abe Alvarez (struggled a lot), Cla Meredith (we all know how that went), and Hanley Ramirz (not sure he got any at-bats). This could be nothing....however playing in Boston takes a real mature athlete and I think there is a chance the Red Sox really look to develop these guys up to the ages of 24-25 before they really let them loose. If that is the case I wonder if that limits the chance they are willing to take on Lester and Hansen playing this season.
  2. John Kruk said Jose Contreras was the best AL pitcher. I wish I could agree with Harold Reynolds that Curt Schilling is the best pitcher in the AL (makes a strong case other than last season). Have these guys seen Johan Santana pitch?? I love how these guys need to go by the season thus far. By the end of the year I wouldn't be suprised at all if Santana wins the Cy Young again. He should have won it last year and if I had to take one pitcher in the league (AL or NL)...it would start with him.
  3. I'll take Ichiro because his defense is fantastic where the other two......well yeah
  4. Thats true with everyone...but if I went on the assumption all my prospects will turn out like Sean Henn I would trade everyone away. It doesn't happen like that though...some work out and some don't. I like the odds of having a truck load of prospects in the minors with a chance to contribute when a hole shows up on the big league team. Its better to run an organization that way then to attempt cutting deals with Billy Beane. On a side note I refuse to compare the Baltimore Orioles farm system with the Boston Red Sox. Currently the Orioles are destroying Nick Markakis who is deffinitly out of his element. Sean Henn came up last season because they had no other options (forced to the majors). I like our prospects and scouting system more than the Orioles and I trust the Red Sox will be smart with Lester.
  5. Octavio Dotel has been out of baseball for a while....he may be returning in a couple weeks but it will take him longer to get his head on straight. We had to deal with that last season in Wade Miller....the talent was there and the history but he was out for so long...things couldn't turn around for him. It may not be till next season he gets back to 100% completely....maybe he never will
  6. I'm going by what I believe. A lefty who can hit 93-95mph with movement on his fastball is already a better fastball than Zito's. He doesn't have the curveball of Zito but I'm not sure thats a real bad thing (sometimes he sucks at locating it). I also have faith in the Red Sox scouting reports and most believe Jon Lester can be better than Jonathan Papelbon. If Papelbon was starting I would take him over Barry Zito....sooo....I'm sticking with Jon Lester in the long run.
  7. I won't go as far as saying they all suck....as long as Rivera is there the bullpen remains stable to a degree. Just like our bullpen the Yanks don't have a pen full of closers....you just want guys to keep you in the game when needed and a couple guys to finish it off for you.
  8. I have to say "no" to Barry Zito. I certainly believe Jon Lester will be better than Zito or close to the same. Craig Hansen is another possibility, Jonathan Papelbon is a chance, a couple seasons down the road Clay Buccholz has a shot, Abe Alvarez is killing all the competition in AAA right now...... Someone will work out....don't overpay for Zito....he isn't worth it
  9. Kinda the way people felt about Aaron Small last season?? What about Shawn Chacon?? Or maybe this years Scott Proctor since you think he suddenly is a great option out of the pen??
  10. I'll be interested to see how long Scott Proctor can last. He's off to a great start but....its Scott Proctor.
  11. Jermaine Van Buren pitches 3 innings in a game giving up one run (optioned to Pawtucket). Yesturday Manny Delcarmen pitches a scoreless 9th inning and looked sharp (optioned to Pawtucket). I don't know who is coming up but you gotta love the depth. I was just reading Mike Holtz could be the one called up as a lefty specialist. Not a bad idea against Giambi and Matsui. He has struck out 24 in 16 innings thus far at AAA. I liked what I saw from the guy in spring training.
  12. I actually figured his batting average would go up compared to what it was in Florida. Hitting at Fenway would only help him in that aspect but HRs are not easy to hit over the Green Monster. He doesn't get his ball elevated enough and all he does is pull the ball. Makes perfect sense he has a lot of doubles but I would expect him to hit more HRs on the road.
  13. What would everyone like to see the Red Sox do with this guy? I really don't find much use for JT Snow at this point. Apparently he is not happy with his playing time but Kevin Youkilis is playing so well I don't see any other approach. Personally I would rather have Hee Seop Choi come up and give us another strong bat to use in a pinch-hit situation as opposed to Snow's glove at the end of a game. Thoughts?
  14. When I look at Barry Zito I think of Matt Clement.....two very different pitchers but the same results. Sometimes they are very difficult to hit and other times they get crushed. Both have trouble locating pitches which is why they get in trouble. If Barry Zito can throw his curve for strikes he has a decent day. I'm not excited about having another Matt Clement....I would like to find the next Johan Santana
  15. well done by Delcarmen....a little off the plate but that curveball is something to watch
  16. Its also a good thing he never gave Jonathan Papelbon a chance to show what he has....otherwise we would still have Foulke as our closer
  17. Then he should consider looking at other players....Rudy Seanez has looked pretty terrible this season and David Riske looked bad in spring training and his 1 inning pitched this season...now he is injured....still a fair amount of questions surrounding the bullpen...did you notice any of it?? Or did you just crawl out from under a rock??
  18. I won't say that....I would hope the team is sorted out and rocking by September....I still feel in May the team can get an idea about players and try to find an identity. On that note it was great to see the bats come out AGAIN. Much less questions about how our team will hit the ball this season.
  19. Whatever, its just another game. We play the Yankees a lot this season and it will most likely come out close to .500 like always. I obviously want to win against the Yankees but I want to see what these young kids can do. I would think Francona would want to see more of Delcarmen who could really show something and make his job tough when Riske comes back.
  20. The one argument I have with something like that is a Yankee game is just another game...it means as much as the Baltimore game today. Not to mention the Yankees have not seen Manny Delcarmen....that could work for a team where we bring in a guy with a 95 mph fastball and a wicked curve....if they aren't going to use him I suggest sending him back down to get more work and get better
  21. I'd still like to see Delcarmen get some work....the kid hasn't been able to pitch at all since being up...give him a chance
  22. I think Markakis should still be in the minors....Baltimore confuses me
  23. why would Francona bring in Tavarez?? He's had a fair amount of work as of late...why not bring in Delcarmen for an inning or two?
