Scouting Report
2004 Season
In 2001, Cristian Guzman was one of baseball's most dynamic players. He became an All-Star by hitting for average, placing himself among the league leaders in triples, showing occasional home-run power and displaying excellent range and a strong throwing arm at shortstop. A shoulder injury that year has led to a decline in his skills, and inconsistent performance has made him a veteran shortstop who's more valuable as a fielder than a hitter.
Hitting
Guzman tends to take weak, choppy swings from the left side of the plate that belie his strength. Guzman is a strong man who displays excellent power in batting practice, but his lefthanded swing and his inability to work counts in his favor keep him from displaying that power regularly in games. He is capable of driving the ball from the right side of the plate when he abandons his slap-hitting approach. Guzman doesn't draw enough walks or hit enough homers to be a good offensive player, even when he elevates his average. He doesn't get as many infield hits as he once did, because he's a step slower than three years ago.
Baserunning & Defense
Guzman hasn't been the same baserunner or basestealer since injuring his shoulder in 2001, partly because he's lost speed, partly because he has never become adept at sliding feet-first. When he slid head-first, he was much more difficult to throw out; now he slows down as he approaches a base. Fielding has become his strength. He's not often spectacular, but has excellent hands and can throw from any angle.
2005 Outlook
While he never again will be mentioned among the game's elite shortstops, Guzman is a solid fielder who, when he gets hot, can hit for extra bases and use the whole field. He no longer is an everyday threat to take over a game, and he will need to continue working on his right shoulder and swing to maintain his competence. Those are the limitations he takes to Washington, as Guzman signed a four-year, $16.8 million deal in November to join the transplanted Expos.
I give him a 6.
