  1. BDD's other suggestion of re-signing Nomar to a 1-year deal is interesting to me. Could work out for both parties, although I imagine Nomar won't want to come, and the team wouldn't sign him. BUT, if Nomar wanted 1 year to prove he can be an elite player again, AND the Red Sox need a 1 year stopgap for Ramirez..... it would seem to be a match.
  2. http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/mlb/news/mlb...s_mlb&fext=.jsp For those who care, it's official. I hope he goes over there and hits 50 HR, then comes back in 2006 to the bigs. It's about playing time with Gabe, which is understandable.
  3. I'm surprised Kapler didn't want to come back, and I'm surprised the Sox didn't make an effort to bring him back. That being said, I was one person who really appreciated all that Gabe did and his contribution to the 2004 World Champion Boston Red Sox. It's sad to see you go, Gabe, but like Cal said... Best of luck to you.
  4. Considering that the Dodgers are prepared to give TROY GLAUS around $10 million, I would not be surprised to see Beltre get more than $10 mil. Glaus is older, (granted, probably a better hitter for power), and Beltre plays better D. I have no idea what Beltre is asking for. I was just making an assumption based on what Boras wants for Tek and what people are guessing Glaus will sign for.
  5. http://www.talksox.com/sim/cesar_crespo.jpg Cesar!
  6. On Lowe: I understand that a lot of people crap on Lowe. Hell, I've done it! Yes, he's inconsistent. Yes, he's got problems keeping his cool. But as we've seen, Derek Lowe CAN be a dominant pitcher. I would not be opposed to seeing Derek back in a Boston uniform, I just hope the Sox don't overpay for him. On Tek: 5 years $50 million is too much. 4 years, $40 million is too much. I would go as high as 4 years $36 million for Tek. He'll still be making $9 mil at 36 which is pretty high.
  7. The only thing I heard about Percival was that he wouldn't sign anywhere unless he was going to be the closer. Now we know money talks, so maybe not. BUT, my guess is that Urbina would set up or be traded. A nice end of game combination though.
  8. I saw this last night: Worth watching! HAHA.
  9. Red Sox make an offer to Damian Miller. http://redsox.bostonherald.com/redSox/view...articleid=54452 Could be a negociating ploy, could mean the Sox don't have a lot of hope with the Varitek negociations.
  10. I think this is a strategy move (and a good one) by the Sox. Boras tells them he's got a 5 year offer on the table, they start talking about Schneider. Calling Boras' bluff, because I don't believe Tek's getting 5 years, $55 million. I REALLY hope the Sox don't trade Mientkiewicz and Youkilis for Schneider.
  11. The sad thing is that he might get that elsewhere. Up until the past couple days, I'd been hearing 5 years $50 mil, but now it seems to be raised to 5 years $55 mil or even $65 mil for 5 years (JEEEZ) Boras apparently says he's got a 5 year deal on the table already. I say Sox call his bluff and tell him 3 years, $27 mill take it or leave it. At $10 mil, the Sox can sign a cheaper option and get the offense elsewhere.
  12. Maybe I'm reaching for straws here, but since he can play first, third, and obviously DH, couldn't the Sox come up with a healthy mix of those positions to KEEP him healthy, and swinging the bat? He's got scary power.
  13. I've heard the White Sox are offering Paul Konerko for RJ. I've also heard the Marlins/Angels/Dbacks may do a 3-way where RJ goes to Anaheim, Jose Guillen goes to Florida and prospects go to Arizona. Anyone know what the Cards are offering?
  14. Do you think it's actually POSSIBLE to cripple the Yankees? I mean this is a team whose payroll has risen every year. They STILL spend the big bucks despite all the efforts to even the playing field. Their payroll is on the verge of going over $200 million. There doesn't seem to be a limit at all. My point here is: Would the Yankees be "crippled" by signing Tek? I don't think so.
  15. I think the reason why the Red Sox won the World Series over St. Louis was PITCHING. Millar's a good clubhouse guy (exept when he opens his mouth when he shouldn't), but Chicago's got Derek Lee, so where would he play in Chicago? A replacement for Alou in left perhaps?
  16. I like the idea of Glaus, because aren't Bellhorn AND Reese free agents? I'd rather see him at third, with Mueller moving to second. I still like Mientkiewicz enough to give him an everyday job with Glaus in the fold (at third). Glaus also is VERY good in the clutch. He hit well against the Red Sox in ALDS this year and of course helped Anaheim win it all in 2002. The only question is his health, but if he got hurt Mueller could go back to third and play there every day. This is a good idea, but the Red Sox would have to get VERY creative moving BOTH Mientkiewicz and Millar to put Glaus at first....
  17. Good question. I just think that Millar's nothing special. YES, he's a good clubhouse guy, and YES, when he's hot, he's HOT, but when he's cold..... he's an almost automatic out. It's my preference obviously (and some people feel differently, I understand that) but I prefer consistency, and defense. I believe that Mientkiewicz can help this team playing everyday MORE than Millar can with his defense, and decent offensive statistics. My prediction from an everyday Mientkiewicz: .290, 15HR, 70 RBI. From what we've seen, an everyday Millar is: .285, 20 HR, 80 RBI. So, is Mientkiewicz's defensive advantage over Millar worth 5 HR and 10 RBI? In my mind, yes it is.
  18. I don't like the idea of instant replay. YES, the umpires screw up calls sometimes, but that's what makes them human. I think they did a very good job on controversial calls of getting together and making the RIGHT call. They should simply do that if a manager's got a legitimate argument. It's the umpire's job to make the calls in the heat of the moment. We may not like their calls all the time, but they are right 98% of the time. I say leave it to the umpires.
  19. I agree that there's too many threads about this subject already. Anyway, as I said in the other threads.... Mientkiewicz is my first baseman. I really think with his bat control (he WAS a .300 hitter for Minnesota before 2004) he could just pepper balls off of the Monster and have tons of doubles. Not to mention hitting .300, and being an awesome defensive first baseman.
  20. Exactly how I would have voted. Santana was probably the best pitcher in baseball this year, and that's the point of this award. Schilling was GREAT, as was Rivera, but Santana was unbelievable. Congrats, Johan.
  21. ahhchon and sarasoxfan are right. This isn't all Boras' fault. He's just doing his job, and the players want to get the biggest contract possible to feed their egos. Could Varitek have been influenced by Boras? Absolutely. But he's a 32 year old man, he can make his own decisions. If he decides for top dollar over loyalty to the Sox, I will be sad to see him go, but happy that the Sox didn't cave in. The bottom line here is that NO CATCHER in baseball (not even Pudge) will be guaranteed $10 mil at age 37. Guys who come close (Charles Johnson, Piazza), have their teams wishing they didn't sign those contracts. Theo + Trio aren't going to make the MISTAKE of giving Tek a no-trade clause OR giving him 5 years. If he walks away from 3 years 30 million (yes, I understand that's MORE than the current offer), the Sox should look in another direction.
  22. I had a thought, you all can tell me if I'm crazy. If Varitek/Boras don't budge from their 5 year $50 million demand, what do you think of trying to sign Mike Matheny? I noticed that he's also a free agent, has no bat really, but is supposed to be awesome with pitchers and a rock behind the plate. Will probably be signed for less money than V-Tek, and if he can be signed for 2 years, he could be full time in 05 and help mentor Shopp in 06. Thoughts?
