  1. El Guapo! 1 in 10,000 isn't so great a chance, but what the heck? Bringing back Garces (El Guapo) would be very cool. Especially if he could pitch well! I heard rumors awhile back that Bottalico would LOVE to pitch for the Sox. The article basically said he'd give his left arm to join us. While he hasn't been as good as Wise, he's been better than most Sox relievers and would probably come cheaper. Another interesting arm in Milwaukee is Mike Adams, who has walked a bunch of guys but also has good strikeout totals in limited action.
  2. Who do you consider a 'decent alternative?' Please don't say Kevin Millar.
  3. You're exactly right Tex. We lost the first game in the Bronx, and look how that turned out? We lost the first 3 games of the ALCS.... etc It's not how you start, it's how you finish. Am I saying they will definately win the series? Absolutely not.... but as bad as this game was, it's only ONE game... and we're still 5-5 against the Yankees this season. No reason to panic.
  4. You have a really good point. Tie game late, I don't like our chances because Gordon and Rivera are very good. And Rivera has proven that he can pitch multiple innings if necessary. I was afraid of Wang in tonight's game, but since he's not pitching, the Red Sox have a decided advantage at this point: Wells vs Redding: Advantage Wells Clement vs Johnson: Advantage Johnson Wakefield vs May/Leiter: Advantage Wakefield Even though Johnson has the edge on Saturday, this could easily go the other way. The Red Sox plated 5 runs on Johnson the last time he pitched at Fenway park, and let him off the hook in New York with some horrendous baserunning. Clement pitched very well against the Yankees in the Bronx. I am actually starting to like our chances to take this series-- despite the devastating loss in game 1. We should, at the very least, split this thing.
  5. Either way I think it's worth a shot.
  6. He wouldn't have to play every day. We'd have Youk and Olerud to share the defensive duties and save Ortiz' body.
  7. This wouldn't be that bad. Throw in Youkilis to play some third and some first to spell the two vets (Olerud and Mueller), and you've got yourself a lineup. I think it's a little unrealistic to expect Schilling in the rotation anytime soon, but swap him and Arroyo and you've still got a solid staff. Then, when Schilling is ready, swap again. Take a look at who the youngsters you listed here (Papelbon, Lester) would be replacing: Embree, Gonzalez, and Halama? Bitch please. They won't be lights out, but I would expect ERAs less than 7 on both accounts. On that note though, I might give Declarman a shot before Papelbon or Lester. He's already a reliever, so no acclimation to a new role is necessary. We may want to bring DiNardo back and promote Lester to AAA before throwing him DIRECTLY into the fire... We could always bring Cla Meridith back (elsrbueno avoids bottles being thrown at his head)
  8. Isn't this exactly what I said in another thread (or perhaps this one a few pages ago?) No, of course I don't expect Kapler to play first, but I strongly believe that between Olerud, Youkilis, and Ortiz we can have first base covered. Why is everyone so hard on Ortiz defensively? Sure, we haven't seen him play there a lot, but if Mo Vaughn can do it, why can't David?
  9. Schilling got effing hammered last night, but in all fairness, he came in to his first MLB action since April against 2 of the best hitters in the game. He wasn't on his game last night and anytime you're not on your game those 2 guys are going to hit you hard. I supported the Curt move to the bullpen at first, but the more I thought about it the more I realized we need him as a starter real bad.... I would not be opposed to sending him back to Pawtucket to get himself stretched out and ready to be our ace again. That being said, 80% of Schilling is still better than Embree or Halama.
  10. I guess he's slightly more useful than Bellhorn off the bench.... but thinking about Millar off the bench makes me miss Gabe Kapler. Aah, Gabe.... Didn't someone say he'd be available on the 15th? Today's the 15th.... Theo, get on it. DFA fatass Millar and get Gabe a uniform.
  11. In all seriousness, we could be out of the playoff hunt by then. I say give Schilling some time to get accustomed to his new role, because there's PLENTY of other players that could be sent packing to make room for the kid: Bellhorn, Millar, Halama, Millar, Embree, Millar......Jeremi Gonzalez perhaps.
  12. Are you somehow implying that Millar is somehow use-FULL? I'm sorry, but Kevin Millar playing the outfield scares the s*** out of me. As if his bad defense at first wasn't bad enough, it's 10X worse in the outfield. I don't consider Millar in the outfield a viable option.
  13. Pictured below is the Red Sox bullpen so far this year: http://www.carbuyingtips.com/pics/crash17.jpg Can a combination of Lester/Declarman/Papelbon/DiNardo be any worse?
  14. Theo's got to have something up his sleeve. One think he has never been as our GM was passive. He's not afraid to take risks (ala Nomar). I say desinate Halama and bring up Lester or DiNardo. Give him the next two weeks and see what he's capable of. Try to fill those spots from within. If he absolutely sucks, try to make a move. It just seems that with Papelbon, Lester, and Declarman dominating the minors ONE of these guys could contribute this year.
  15. Or follow around Kevin Brown, or Randy Johnson with a camera might work too. Man, $250k.
  16. Jon Lester, the kid who's flat-out dominating AA right now is a lefty. Another option would be Lenny DiNardo, who's holding his own as a starter in AAA.
  17. For the record, I'd love to see the Sox persue Soriano if Texas falls out of the race. I know I'm going to take a lot of crap for saying that, but this guy is a monster offensively and holds his own with the glove. Also, he may be able to slide into center next year if need be. If Texas falls out of the race, they be willing to talk about Soriano. Just a thought-- obviously not if he costs a ton of prospects, but he's worth a telephone call or two.
  18. I have to back SITN here because I truly believe Miller will improve. This guy was a pretty amazing pitcher in Houston before being striken with injuries, and he may still be gaining that strength back. I've been wrong plenty of times before, but I strongly believe Miller will be a big part of the second half Red Sox.
  19. I would expect him to struggle at first, but I don't see this kid imploding. He's handled every level with professionalism so far. Like Crespo said, he puts the ball in play. He's walked more than he's struck out everywhere in the minor leagues, and good strike zone judgement is something you can't teach. That usually bodes well for future success. This guy's a David Eckstein type player, and honestly I'd welcome his energy. Like I said in another thread, perhaps what these Dead Sox need is a little youthful enthusiasm. Soxie-- any chance you find this guy attractive? http://www.soxprospects.com/players/images/dustinpedroia.jpg
  20. He's probably not quite ready, but in all honesty, would he be worse than Bellhorn? He's had more walks than strikeouts everywhere in the minors, he's hitting .277 in AAA right now with a .382 OBP and he's scored 10 runs in 12 games for Pawtucket. He could probably use at least another month in the minors, and I can understand the Sox desire to bring him up properly.... but it's wicked tempting right now.
  21. As long as Bradford can stay healthy he should be fine. For his first outing of the season, that wasn't catastrophic. The command should come with some regular work. The big question mark from my end is his health though. 2 back surguries? Ouch. Just hope he can hold up for the next half season. If he can get the righties and Myers can get the lefties that should give us a potent duo late in games-- now all we need is a closer.
  22. Sure, who wouldn't love a rotation of Pedro Martinez, Johan Santana, Curt Schilling (healthy), Roger Clemens, and Matt Clement (ordinary pitcher thrown into the end for effect)...... The problem is that isn't realistic. As much as it dissapoints you, we are not the Yankees. This organization is commited to building from within and remaining "physcally responsible" which means not buying all stars for every position, and not spending $15 million a year on 40 year old pitchers. Theo Epstein has said he would not give up the top prospects in this organization, which makes it damn-near impossible to acquire a Jason Schmidt type ace pitcher at the deadline. Which implies to me that he's prepared to go forward with what we've got already... which means Bronson is a starter until Schilling comes back.... and we have absolutely no idea when that will be.
  23. Listen to El Guapo. He's right. As bad as Bellhorn is (and believe me, he's been nothing short of horrible to date) Alex Cora is worse. He's very simply NOT an everyday player. He's more solid with the glove than Bellhorn, but he doesn't even compare offensively. I know that's a pretty bold statement, but take a look at his career numbers: He's not a good hitter. Playing him everyday would expose him more to pitchers and make him look even worse. Right now if it's between Alex Cora or Mark Bellhorn, I'm starting Bellhorn every time. I will point out however, that a certain struggling team was jump-started by bringing in some fresh talent from the minors to play second base. Could the Sox benefit from the same?
  24. I'm not ready to give up on Bronson Arroyo. At 28 years old he's no prospect, and he had a bad night last night, but he's still got potential. Of course a deal for AJ Burnett would be a positive thing (because Burnett has higher upside IMO), but I wouldn't be interested in just getting rid of Bronson for nothing. He was 7-5 with a very respectable 4.02 ERA before blowing up against the Yankees, and was respectable last year. Let's face facts here folks: We had a #5 pitcher throwing against a #2 in yesterday's game and Bronson still gave us a chance to win. He's battled the likes of Johnson, Halladay, and now Mussina already this season and given us a chance to win every time. Isn't that what you want in a #5 pitcher? Bronson Arroyo is not this team's ace, and shouldn't be expected to pitch like one.
  25. We talking about this Al Leiter? The one who can't succeed in a pitchers heaven? Doesn't seem like much of an improvement to me. Especially at over $7 million
