  1. First off, I think it's the general feeling that Trot will be out a considerable amount of time. Second, I love Huff's offense (who doesn't), but do we really want another poor defender in the outfield? We already have Manny and on occasion Millar. Third, if I have Huff on my team, I find him ABs. He can fill in at third in a pinch, first base, and the outfield. Find the man ABs. Also, would you start Kevin Millar over Aubrey Huff? NO FREAKING WAY!!! The man's a monster with the bat. If the Sox were to acquire him they could move forward with the Millar to the Twins/Mets/Astros stuff we've been hearing for the past month.
  2. DFA'd by Milwaukee http://milwaukee.brewers.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/article.jsp?ymd=20050727&content_id=1146807&vkey=news_mil&fext=.jsp&c_id=mil This guy was rumored to be looked at by the Red Sox but struggled of late. This guy is very cheap and would be a low risk move for the Sox. I can't find it, but I read somewhere that Bottalico would "give his left arm" to pitch for the Red Sox. Why not give him a shot? Ricky Bottalico
  3. The two rumors I heard relating Pavano were the ones already stated: Pavano to the Marlins in a potential AJ Burnett deal Pavano to the Mariners in a Meche + Winn type deal. I think Winn is EXACTLY what the Yankees need right now. A relatively cheap, durable centerfielder with speed and good defensive ability. He's no Griffey Jr namewise, but he's the guy they want complementing Williams. Even if you use him as a pinch runner/late inning defensive replacement, he's valuable. He could also spell Sheffield and Matsui at times, neither of which are spring chickens. However, trading Pavano to get Winn seems like it hurts the Yankees more than it helps them. This team is desperate for pitching sending their youngest starter out of town after just a half season? Unfortunately, the Yankees don't have much else to offer. They could talk about prospects like Henn, Cano, Duncan, Cabrera but Cashman has been adament about NOT moving those guys. It seems to me like the only deals the Yankees could make right now are salary dump trades. In that kind of deal, the team doesn't usually request a lot of talent in return. The Yankees have the prospects to add a player or (maybe) two, but in my opinion would be a very very bad idea to do that.
  4. and very lucky. This had the chance to be MUCH MUCH worse. With a day off tomorrow, the Sox could figure out how to give him an extra day (or two) without hurting the club. The guy they just brought up (DiNardo) could make an emergency start if necessary, plus they have that old guy in the bullpen who could start. Great news though. Glad Matt's OK.
  5. I have to agree here. Hyzdu to me seems like the classic 4-A player. He kicked the crap out of AAA last year but hasn't been able to succeed at the major league level. We just have to deal with him until Gabe's ready, which should be Saturday.
  6. This is hilarious. Back to the subject at hand, I actually listen to all the games on the radio. It makes it that much nicer when I find someone who DOES have a TV to catch the game though!
  7. They DLed Kapler when he came back and I don't think he's able to come back until July 30th. So, they'll have to fill in with Hyzdu/Stern/Millar until Kapler comes back
  8. Just heard on WEEI that Terry went back to Manny today and asked him to start since the Sox were losing Trot to the DL today and he still said no. Patience with Manny Ramirez has got to run out at some point. He's like a 2 year old.
  9. It was the Devil Rays and it was his first outing. Just like we'd be saying "don't worry about it" if he had a bad first outing, we need to take last night for what it was: A great debut. Hopefully it'll cause some confidence in the kid and he can continue to pitch well in relief for the Boston Red Sox. What I liked about the kid was that he threw strikes. Yes, he worked some deep counts, but he threw strikes when he absolutely had to, and that impressed me. Also his outing turned out to be VERY important in this game. If John Olerud was a LITTLE bit faster, we could have been talking about Manny's first win as a Boston Red Sox. Keeping his team in the game when they're down by only 2 was HUGE last night. If he came in and got lit up last night could have had a much worse outcome. Welcome to Boston Manny.
  10. That's pretty hilarious. I hope the Yankees or Angels try to use Embree as a lefty specialist, because as I've said about 1,000 times, he's not a lefty specialist. Lefthanded hitters were hitting .304 against him when he was DFA'd!! The Red Sox hope also that they can get SOMEthing for him, because otherwise he goes for nothing. I agree with Crespo though that it'll be difficult to get some value for him, but on the other hand, the Red Sox got something for BK Kim... why not Embree?
  11. For the record, I agree with Booger here. I hate it when players stand there and admire homeruns. Fist pumping to me is different because it's probably a show of emotion at the time of getting a key out or a key hit, etc.
  12. Way worse this year IMO. Last year they had Jon Lieber who was solid, and Orlando Hernandez made a pretty good showing in the second half last year. They had Kevin Brown more often (and he wasn't as bad if you can believe that). They desperately need Pavano healthy and effective, or some combination of the new guys to find themselves. I can't imagine these guys hanging in the race with 2 effective pitchers. This year they've got a better 1-2 punch with Johnson and Mussina, but the rotation is really only two deep. Just because you're released by the Devil Rays doesn't necessarily mean you're finished-- John Burkett was released by them a few years back and was ressurected in Atlanta.... that having been said, Nomo doesn't seem to have much left this season.
  13. The New York Mets. I read a while back that the Mets coveted his run production ability and were interested in him last offseason (and were also looking at Sosa) and still are. Not to say the Red Sox might have to eat some of his salary (or take on an undesirable contract, ala, Tom Glavine) but the Red Sox could move Ramirez. The problem is they'd have to eat part of his contract or take someone else's bad contract to make it work. If that's the case, I'm not sure it benefits the Sox to trade him.
  14. I'd say this is a bad rumor made up by the media until I get some real info on this.
  15. Cecil Fielder's son. Prince Fielder. It wouldn't be a bad acquisition (Overbay) because he's a lefty bat and a decent one at that-- but what we need really is a strong righty bat to complement Ortiz/Olerud as the other 1B options. Young is a good idea because he's a switch hitter (albeit stronger from the left side apparently).
  16. I'm really excited about this. Love to see the young kids get a chance to prove themselves. This guy pitched pretty well in the minors this season. With Tampa Bay on tap the next couple days, I wouldn't be surprised to see him in a game sooner rather than later Manny had 14 K's in only 9.2 innings at Pawtucket. He did allow 9 hits and walked 4 batters (a 1.44 WHIP) but he's got the stuff to dominate.
  17. It's true. Also, the Giants are swearing up and down that they're not moving Schmidt. I'd be surprised if he was anywhere but San Fransisco on August 1st.
  18. I think the Red Sox would definately be interested in a Ryan Howard, but I wouldn't be surprised if Dmitri Young were in their sights. Keep in mind they've tried to trade Millar to Houston and Minnesota (among other teams) and may be interested in a replacement who can help them immediately.
  19. Seems to me that with Renteria under contract for 3 years after 2005, the Red Sox are interested to see how Hanley handles other positions. If he becomes a superstar like everyone predicts, it will not be as a utility-man. He'll have one position he'll play everyday where he can fine tune his defensive skills. While I'd love for the Sox to have Chone Figgins (I think he's an asset to any team with his versatility and energy) I don't see Ramirez becoming that type of player IF he realizes his potential. The Red Sox will want to give him some consistency by playing him every day at the same position.
  20. Good. If Hansen starts strong, I could see him called up in September, but probably just to get a taste of the majors. Then of course a Spring Training invite with a chance to win a job in the Sox bullpen next spring. It's expecting too much to ask this guy to be a contributer this season, he hasn't even thrown a pitch in pro ball!
  21. I'm luke-warm on any deal including Sanchez AND Bronson Arroyo for Burnett. I hate to give up both a decent starter AND a top-notch prospect for a rental player (and unless AJ resigns, that's all he is).....
  22. The knock on Mesa is that he hasn't pitched in a meaningful game in a LONG time. He did not pitch well for Philadelphia when he was in a pennant race there, and the feeling around baseball is that his performance in key situations in a big game is at least a HUGE question. I looked deeper at Jose's 2005 performance, and I'm very unimpressed. He averages 6 K's per 9 innings, which isn't horrible, but hitters are .293/.370/.421 against him. EEK! Mesa's stats (ESPN) Personally, I'd rather give a guy like Declarman or Papelbon a shot before going after a guy like Jose Mesa... but that's just my opinion. I've got reservations about Bob Wickman as well. He's got an injury history, a 36 year old arm, and a $2.75 million contract. He's a quality pitcher but his 4.3 K's/9 aren't exactly ideal for a closer-- it tells me he doesn't have dominant stuff. I'd take him off of Cleveland's hands if they weren't looking for big-time talent, but with Cleveland only 2.5 games out of the Wild Card race, I don't see them trading their closer away.
  23. no. The Red Sox should learn from the mistakes of the Yankees organization and NOT trade their top prospects for overpriced veterans. Contrary to popular belief, great teams are not built by piecing together free agents. The Boston Red Sox need to continue to strengthen the farm system by developing (and keeping) these good young players. I'm strongly against trading the following players: Hanley Ramirez, Dustin Pedroia, Anibal Sanchez, Jon Lester, Jon Papelbon. To a lesser extent: Brandon Moss, Manny Declarman. Kelly Shoppach I could justify trading in the right deal considering he'll be damn near 30 before he gets a chance to be a big league player here in Boston. I have said this about 1,000,000 times on this board: The most recent Yankee dynasty (96-2000) was built on a foundation of HOMEGROWN talent and roleplayers. The minute they started signing high priced superstar players like Mussina, Giambi, Sheffield, etc-- they stopped winning championships. The Red Sox don't need to add superstars. Therefore, they don't need to give up their top prospects.
  24. Jason Schmidt to me represents a high risk, high reward move. With his injuries this year and high contract, giving up high level prospects could come back to burn the Red Sox if he gets hurt. That having been said, if Jason is able to get back to his 2003-2004 self, this would be a fantastic addition for Boston's rotation. Yes, he's been great since the All Star Break (albeit 2 starts) but he was inconsistent in June and July and averaged ERAs over 4 in both months. I still very much like his K/9 (8.89) ratio and is almost has a 2:1 strikeout to walk ratio. He's been more of a flyball pitcher the past few years, which could cause trouble in Fenway. I'd be hesitant to give up any of the big three (as labeled by Crespo) Sanchez, Lester, or Papelbon, but a prospect deal headed by Kelly Shoppach would be worth considering.
  25. I get the feeling Henry's love of Burnett is what keeps this thing alive. Most people around baseball still think the Orioles are the favorites, and keep in mind that if the Marlins decide they don't need Lowell included, a bunch of other teams will join back into the hunt. The best thing for the Marlins to do (IMO) is drop the Lowell talk, and get the best possible deal for Burnett. If that happens, Boston should stick to their offer of Arroyo/Miller and a mid-level prospect (Shoppach?) and if that gets the job done, great. If not, let it go. IF the Red Sox really are interested in sending Burnett after they get him to Philly, that WILL prevent the Marlins from dealing with us. The last thing they want to do is send the man to a rival-- especially a young man like Burnett. As far as Burnett vs Wagner is concerned-- that's a tough one. Burnett is younger but since both are approaching free agency, both can be considered rentals. The more I think about Wagner out of the Sox bullpen the more I like the idea, but I don't see the Phillies giving up on 2005 just yet.
