  1. Millar's up. Inning over. EDIT - Figures
  2. To be honest, though, I don't think Ortiz made THAT great a case for MVP last year. He got himself into the picture, which was great. But he wasn't going to have a legitimate shot at it.
  3. Bellhorn scores again. And you've just got to love how he seems to get calls that more free-swinging hitters don't seem to get. Does anybody think that the umpires are aware of the reps of walk machines the same way that they are of pitchers who are known for throwing strikes? Sometimes I wonder if Bellhorn isn't getting some Maddux/Glavine-like gifts from the umps.
  4. Clearly, Bellhorn Sucks. If you're the opposing pitcher.
  5. Oh, he can make himself look pretty bad without much help, I think. Just remember that we get to see him in RF, too!
  6. Um...there were 2 men in scoring position with the bases loaded...5 men left on, though. Just only 4 of them in scoring position.
  7. I think it's more likely that Mueller will be recovering just as pitchers across the AL figure out Youklis, who is a somewhat unknown quantity right now. But an extended look is always nice.
  8. To be fair to Bellhorn, that wasn't the easiest play in the world that Crosby made. I'm more annoyed at Millar not coming through with RISP...again.
  9. I love that two of these games are on ESPN2. I also love that we have a 1.5 game lead going into this series against the first serious competition we've seen in a little while. I hate that one of the two ESPN2 games is going to be started by Derek Lowe.
  10. A third team isn't likely to ignore Nomar because of a freak injury any more than we avoided Schilling because of his odd DL stints last season. Also, we have no real reason to think that he wants to stay with Boston now, since there is absolutely no reason to confuse agent-speak with fact.
  11. I seriously doubt that the rift from this past offseason can ever be repaired without overpaying horrendously for Nomar. He's gone, IMO.
  12. I think he is regarded accurately. As far as RFs go, he's not the greatest by any measure, and he is regarded as such by the national media. However, when you say that RSN overrates him so badly, take a look at who has been in RF for the Sox over the past decade. Trot Nixon is NOT overrated when you say that he is great relative to what we've been forced to watch in that position in recent memory. Even this year, he's great if you compare him to the production you get from Kapler/Crespo/Millar playing that same position. You can't say that there isn't any potential for him to have a great impact on the team when you kick Kapler's bat out of the lineup and Millar's defense back to the IF. So yes, he's not great, but he's great relative to the alternatives we have available.
  13. It's hard not to like this matchup. We're rested, we're annoyed at being back in 2nd, and we're playing the worst team in baseball.
  14. Pedro may or may not be worth his asking price. Lowe definitely isn't. That makes it kind of easy to figure out who management would prefer to make a push at to sign.
  15. Some thoughts on your points. 1) Probably so, but it may take some time for Nixon to rise above Millar/Kapler level once he rejoins the team. 2) I think Kim will be back in that spot by the ASB, at the absolute latest. Arroyo has been great, but I think it's too much to expect him to keep this up all year. I'm afraid he'll break down, or the hitters will catch up to him before too long. 3) Yes. Absolutely. In pitching and in personality. 4) I don't think so. Part of one year can be a fluke, two straight years makes the good year look like the fluke. 5) No to the margin of victory (will be within losing by 2 and winning by 2), but agree with the 13 wins.
  16. Instead of banging your head against the wall, take the day off to savor the following facts: 1) We're only half a game behind the yankees, in spite of not having Nomar, Trot, or a healthy, stable Kim 2) Our BACKUP #5 starter has outpitched the arguable ace of the yankees' staff...twice 3) Our team's ERA is almost half a run better than anybody else's in the AL, and Pedro hasn't quite been "the Pedro of old." 4) Dave McCarty is hitting better than Derek Jeter (.229 > .195). So is everyone else not named Cesar Crespo or Ellis Burks. EVERYONE 5) We have two catchers hitting over .280 6) Manny is hitting .354 when he's only had Millar, Varitek, or Daubach hitting behind him. (see also point #1) 7) Pokey's Better. Nuff said. 8) Mark Bellhorn has more home runs (4) than Gary "Roid Boy" Sheffield (3) 9) This team is not going to hit .267 all year, and we're still only .5 games out of first 10) Grady Little is gone
  17. A good play on Baseball Tonight doesn't make a good defensive player. I also don't get where Mueller was supposed to have been a Gold Glove-caliber defensive player in the past.
  18. Bill Mueller may or may not have been known as a good defender, but he has never been much more than below average defensively over his career. He's not as bad as Todd Walker was, but he's not going to save us any runs when he's playing there.
  19. Derek Lowe is the most talented 4-year-old I've ever seen on the mound. He still has the talent, he's just so shaky personality -ise that I don't see him ever reproducing his 2002 numbers with the Red Sox. He may be the type of player who desperately needs a smaller market like Detroit (they have money, small market right now, and isn't he from there originally?) to reach his full potential consistently, a la Jeff Weaver.
  20. Let's not talk about our defense. Millar in RF, Bellhorn's mental lapses at 2B, Mueller at 3B...ugh.
  21. Send him to the minors for the rehab starts that he should have gotten in the first place. With Arroyo being a servicable #5, I don't see any need to rush Kim back like we seem to have done. Kim can talk about feeling fine all he wants, but he clearly isn't when he tops out at 86-88 MPH. PS - To answer the initial question...both. He's not going to be the star #2/#3 starter we wanted, nor is he as bad as he has pitched recently.
  22. I don't really see how looking for high OBP and making productive outs/stealing are mutually exclusive concepts. I like Tito's habit of giving certain hitters green lights on 3-0 counts, provided that the pitcher is likely to actually get the ball over the plate. If there's an issue of wildness, then I'd rather have the Bellhorn-Reese-Daubach types take a pitch to get on base. Even if they don't get on base, taking the 3-0 consistently helps to work up the opposing pitcher's pitch count. At the same time, if somebody takes a 3-0 pitch and walks with nobody out, I don't see why you wouldn't have somebody like Damon, Reese, or even Crespo bunt him over with a chance for a single. You obviously don't want to have Ortiz, Manny, Varitek, or even Millar (lately) potentially wasting ABs with bunt attempts, but the others should be fair game for sacrifices.
  23. Given that our pitching staff has the best ERA in the AL by a full run, I'm thinking that giving up 2 runs in the 1st and then none for most of the rest of the game is better than most of the alternatives. The Pedro vs. Sabathia game in Cleveland comes to mind. Plus, I think the team gets a nice emotional boost from coming from behind to win. There could also be a weather influence in that some of our pitchers may need an inning or two to feel fully warm at the start of the game.
  24. Personally, I think that some streakiness is just how the game is. The only other factor that strikes me as something that could have added to it is the 2 doubleheaders in 3 days at the start of the losing streak.
  25. Any website that perpetuates the garbage idea that the curse actually exists deserves to be ignored. If he actually believes in the "curse" enough to name his site after it, then I have to question just how much of a diehard (or intelligent) Red Sox fan he is.
