BOSTON - Manny Ramirez charged into the Red Sox clubhouse on Saturday wearing a light blue designer trenchcoat and a big smile. His teammates were preparing for a huge victory parade to celebrate the team's first title in 86 years, and the World Series most valuable player raised the voltage even higher.
"Hey guys," Ramirez hollered. "Did you hear? I'm traded to the Mets. I haven't even had a chance to enjoy the parade and I'm traded to the Mets."
Ramirez had heard the news coming out of New York that the Mets might try to acquire him this offseason, but he isn't giving it much credence. For the most part, the slugger and his teammates were treating the reports like a joke.
"Cliff Floyd and Manny in the same outfield?" yelled Kevin Millar, who also played with Floyd for the Marlins. "I could be a defensive replacement."
At times over the past couple years, it has seemed like Ramirez might actually end up in New York, where he attended George Washington High in Washington Heights and has a huge following among the community's large Dominican population.
He once said he hoped he would finish his career with the Yankees after his eight-year, $160 million contract with Boston ends.
Last winter, the Sox placed him on irrevocable waivers, putting him up for grabs for any team that could afford his contract (a small group that includes both New York teams).
But much has changed for him the past year. In addition to shining during the World Series, he overcame his reluctance to give interviews in English, and has become more accessible to the media and to fans, who now adore him.
