  1. Brock, I think when healthy Contreras is a good add.  Based on his history in the game, even at DH and 1B his body is subject to historical levels of wear and tear, so I put his GP over/under at 108 since 135 seemed like a career year.  I believe we bought high.  We have to hope 2/3 of a player can be back filled by Casas, Yoshida and Abreu the lefty platoon player.

For the money involved, I think Contreras will be a really nice pickup for the Sox. I like the move a lot.

Remember a great player named Miguel Cabrera who fell off the table performance wise at age 34 when his 4.9 WAR dropped below 1.0 for the rest of his career?  Likewise, Albert Pujols dropped off the table from a WAR of 4.8 to 1.6 at age 33 then came back a bit at 34 and 35 with WAR over 3.0 for the last time in his career.

At age 34 in 2026, Contreras may have seen his best years despite the optimism of him moving to DH/1B from C and providing a 2.5 WAR in 2025.  Looking at his trend, we see 4.2 in 2021, 3.8 in 2022, 3.3 in 2023 and 3.0 in 2024 while playing catcher at least part time.  The 2.5 last year continues the downward trend and to me that's not a good sign for the future especially in light of the performances of two great Latin players who dropped off dramatically at this age with far less wear and tear on their knees since they didn't catch so many games in their career.
