Red Sox's Trade Deadline Wishlist Following Curtis Mead Blockbuster

Now that Curtis Mead has been acquired to fill the hole at second base, where should the Red Sox turn with one week left until the trade deadline.

The first domino has fallen. After months of being involved in mock trades and rumors, pitcher Connelly Early was traded to the Washington Nationals for infielder Curtis Mead over the weekend.

A former top-40 prospect, Mead has enjoyed a breakout season in 2026. He’s blasted 17 round-trippers and his underlying metrics suggest that his swing is built for Fenway. Mead’s wRC+ of 134 is good for third on the Boston Red Sox behind Jahmai Jones (in a small sample) and Willson Contreras. He checks the box for a right-handed impact bat, but the roster still has plenty of needs, including potentially another right-handed slugger.

While the market for catchers is still largely abstract, there are a few names that could catch chief baseball officer Craig Breslow's eye. Carlos Narvaez and Connor Wong have split time behind the plate this season, but between Narvaez’s regression as a hitter and Wong’s inconsistency, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the Red Sox make a big splash. Following Shea Langelier's injury, the Sox could turn their sights to Colorado's Hunter Goodman, Minnesota’s Ryan Jeffers, or New York’s Francisco Alvarez for some more thump in the lineup.

Goodman is having a career year and the Rockies would demand a king's ransom in exchange for the 26-year-old who has three more years of team control. However, Goodman already has 31 homers on the year and would slot in as the Red Sox's best hitter not named Contreras.

A slightly more realistic avenue would be the Twins’ Ryan Jeffers. Coming off of a two-month absence due to a hamate bone injury, Jeffers is one of the best rental hitters on the trade market; he's batting close to .300 and would be a worthy addition to the lineup. A free agent after the 2026 season, he wouldn’t be as expensive as Goodman, but the Red Sox would still have to pay a pretty penny.

A more under-the-radar candidate would be New York’s Francisco Alvarez. Batting .260 with 12 homers on the year, Alvarez has an OPS of .740 with average defensive metrics. Trading for Alvarez would take a haul due to his immense upside, but he’s under control until 2029 and could help give the Red Sox long-term stability behind the dish.

Elsewhere on the roster, Mead will plug in at second base, giving the Red Sox a plethora of infield utility options, but none with consistent or outstanding offensive numbers. Should the team stay complacent at catcher, they could pursue an upgrade at shortstop. Between Trevor Story’s season hampered by injury and Marcelo Mayer’s consistent struggles, an upgrade might be necessary.

According to Bob Nightingale of USA Today, the Red Sox would “love” to acquire either the Angel’s Zach Neto or the Astro’s Jeremy Peña. Boston checked in on both players this past offseason, but now a trade seems more likely with the poor offensive production at the position so far this season.

Neto is batting .236 with 19 bombs this year and a .771 OPS. While his career high 31.5% strikeout rate is worrying and his defense leaves something to be desired, he’s hit at least 23 homers in the last two seasons and is on pace to surpass that again this season. His swing would fit at Fenway, as all but four of his homers in 2026 have been hit to left field.

Peña is another interesting trade candidate. Despite missing the first month of the season due to injury, the Astros’ infielder is having the best year of his career at the plate with a .315 batting average and a .849 OPS. Peña has no issue getting on base, but with just 28 RBIs and nine homers this season, he lacks the pop the Red Sox might be seeking.

The Red Sox have also loosely been tied to Nationals’ shortstop C.J. Abrams, but it’s hard to see the Nationals giving up their young star for anything less than a king's ransom.

As enticing as a shortstop trade might be, the Red Sox might be reluctant to go big with top prospect Franklin Arias waiting in the wings in Worcester. Boston could try and swing a trade for a rental bat at shortstop before calling on Arias in the coming seasons.

The only other position of immediate need for Boston is in the bullpen. Although the Red Sox have one of the best bullpens in the game, a high-leverage reliever to eat late innings is always beneficial, especially if they part ways with Aroldis Chapman. If the Mets decide to blow it all up, a pair of solid relievers could be on the market.

Luke Weaver has been nothing short of outstanding in his first year in Queens. A 1.98 ERA through 41 innings speaks for itself, but when you add in a 0.805 WHIP and an xERA of 2.80, you get one of the best relief arms on the market. Right-handed relief isn’t a necessity for Boston, and the Mets would demand a high return, but with a lack of left-handed relief pitching on the market, acquiring Weaver could make Boston’s pen the best in the sport.

A.J. Minter is another potential trade chip from the same source. In 22 games this season, Minter has recorded a 2.45 ERA and an impressive 1.045 WHIP.  A look under the hood is slightly more worrisome as an xERA of 3.71 dictates some amount of luck is baked into his results. His groundball rate is also 10% lower than the past two seasons. Despite the concerns and being a step down from Weaver, Minter is still a quality arm and could be a more affordable option. Additionally, Minter fills the left-handed relief role the Red Sox are hungry for.

Acquiring players at any of the three positions would be a boon at the trade deadline, making a scorching hot Red Sox squad more dangerous in advance of the postseason.

I did kind of like it until I realized Samar Taylor isn’t any sort of prospect but is more of a career minor leaguer.  Also he’s on the IL…

Again, wouldn't be mad, but he's mid. Call him plan F or G. lol. If we're going for a RH LF that isn't a rental, I'd pay more for Heliot Ramos, Lane Thomas or JJ Bleday.

That's crazy. I think you are overestimating how much value Mayer has left around the league. Things happen fast in baseball. 2 years of injuries and poor performance will have it's toll. If we can get a strong RP, and a lefty at that, for Mayer, that is a slam dunk.

Hard to figure why a team wouldn't wanna trade the best all-around player in the AL and the face of the franchise.

However, one would think KC's GM would at least listen to offers if only to provide himself a good laugh.

Mayer is worth more than a 2 month rental on a reliever.  I doubt things change that much that rapidly in baseball that Marcelo Mayer can go from a top 15 prospect in all of baseball to bring a “almost enough” to get a rental reliever all in a span of 300 plate appearances and before he can legally rent a car.

None of us know how much value he has left around the league.  BTV gives him similar value to Otto Lopez, which feels like a huge stretch.  But certainly he has more value than rental reliever + career minor leaguer…

i don't know anything about Morejon, but i really like Samad. he can play any of the outfield positions and second and short equally well.

now i see Morejon is a two month rental. no way i'd do that trade.

The fact that Mayer doesn’t have more plate appearances is a tell in itself.

BTV is utter nonsense. lol. Some of the stuff you guys post as realistic just bc BTV says it is has been laughable.
Look, I hope I'm wrong about his value. If he can bring us back some big time talent, no one will be happier than me. But I see no future for him on this team. And I think a lot of you will be very disappointed when we trade him and what we get.
Also, just because someone is a rental, doesn't mean their teams just give them away. Especially recent all-stars that several teams will make offers on. And sometimes rentals help you win a ring. Morejon would greatly help solidify our bullpen as one of the best in the league. We could use another reliable lefty in the pen.

P.S. I could not care less about Taylor or Mullins in that deal and don't even know who's worth more, To me that deal is Mayer for Morejon, which I do in a heartbeat.

I watched the Cardinals-Blue Jays game specifically to see Springer's ABs.  He rewarded with a 2 for 4, 2 RBIs, a double .    Alway like GS and worried when he hit against us in Fenway.     I think he could be a valuable , veteran pickup who does not need a 2027 commitment.    If Yoshi can play LF then I suspect George can too, even if in a platoon or just as a PH role in Fenway.      I know he is definitely older and has had a weak season early but then I look at most of the Red Sox through June 24 and shed any concerns about adding Springer.

Gausman also pitched today and you could reach similar conclusions. He is capable of getting 6 innings and keep the score down.   He has had weak run support this year, and should have a better record.

Gausman would be a fine pickup, but I'm wondering if Toronto would trade him to an AL East opponent. Same goes for Springer.

It's really difficult to find very many trades where a team just gave up on a top prospect that had as little experience as Mayer and dealt him for a rental player.   I can only think of it happening twice .

Th Athletics dealing Carlos Gonzalez (318 PA)  to the Rockies for Matt Holliday

The Athletics dealing Jesus Luzardo (71 IP) to the Marlins for Starling Marte

I think we both see a pattern there.

So only one team has ever made a trade like that.  And I doubt the Sox have given up on Mayer nearly as much as many fans have.  I am also 100% positive many teams value him more than you do, if not all of them.

I do think Mayer could be dealt.  With the rises of Durbin and Arias as well as the acquisition of Mead, he is without a position.   But he isn't going for a rental, unless it is someone like Skubal.  And I don't think either Boston or Detroit is looking at that deal...

The whole "trades within the division" thing is overblown, especially with rental players.

It actually makes a ton of sense for Toronto to trade Gausman within the division.   If they are trading him, they are giving up on 2026 anyway and hoping for 2027 or later.   Well, that future gets just that much easier if they take a prospect or two from a division rival as opposed to just a random team.

Trades within the division happen all the time.  But when you only have 4 teams in your division and 25 of them utside of it, it is easier to find trading partners outside the division.

I mean, just a few days ago the Angels traded Chase Silseth and Logan O'Hoppe within their division...

They should be.   They's in 5th place in the AL East and the 4th place team has already started selling.   Detroit is ahead of them for a WC and is taking calls on Skubal and scratching Casey Mize from starts so he does not get hurt.  Five teams are in front of them for the final wild casrd slot and it appears as though some of those teams are already dealing away players.

Toronto might fight for a final spot, but it would certainly be a questionable decision...

Morejon is an extermely talented RP that is on the very short list of woethwhile free agents after this season.  He was an All Star this year, which is not something a lot of non-closing relievers do.  I'd take Morejon, but not for Mayer unless he (Morejon) was paired with someoe more useful than Samad Tayor....

He did pick on BTV, and quite well too. It cracks me up when I hear BTV accepts this, and BTV accepts that, but the trades don’t come to fruition.:A nice little play toy for some I guess.

They have a 27yo SS who plays above average defense and is leading the majors in hits and doubles at supposedly "similar value" as a 23yo who has done nothing but get injured and be mid at best when he's been on the field. That is all I need to know. Prospect rankings from multiple years past have very little value in the real world. Can you imagine the laughter from the Marlins GM if we called them up and offered Mayer for Lopez?

My comp is Nick Madrigal. Drafted 4th overall. Top rated 2B prospect. Saddled with injuries in his first few seasons. Traded for Craig Kimbrel who was pitching well but was also just off 2 bad previous seasons, and Madrigal was hitting over .750 in 2 seasons but with only 300 AB's. Deadline deal. So Mayer for an all-star lefty reliever seems just fine to me.

Madrigal was older and wasn’t the same level of prospect Mayer has been, never being ranked under #40.  Mayer has never been ranked over #15.

I imagine his equal value to Lopez is a slow update.  Or some sites are still giving Mayer very good projections…

I agree they should be, and probably will. But another W tomorrow and they could get starting smoking that hopium. The difference is the return on the Jays guys will be decent but not franchise altering. So they could say f*** it and just go for it. Whereas Detroit cannot afford to let Skubal walk with anything short of a WS appearance or their GM can just let himself out.

Yes, but Madrigal at least showed he could hit in the big leagues in the small sample size he got. And he was only 1 year older.

And I feel like my point stands as far as taking BTV values with a bowl of salt. Let me know when they update his value to the real world.
