Series Breakdown/Highlights

White Sox Series: The Red Sox looked to keep rolling after the sweep of the Angels to close out last week, and they faced a tough test in the form of the AL Central leading White Sox. While the South Side Sox were without All-Star Munetaka Murakami, they should have put up a decent fight since they are leading their division. Game one proved the Red Sox were about to keep their foot on the gas. Ceddanne Rafaela and Andruw Monasterio both homered while Willson Contreras, Romy Gonzalez, Jarren Duran, and Connor Wong all contributed RBIs. Rookie Payton Tolle dazzled on the mound again, tossing 6.2 scoreless innings while striking out six. Danny Coulombe did allow an earned run, but Justin Slaten, Garrett Whitlock, and Ryan Watson were scoreless out of the bullpen

Game two was another shut out for the Red Sox. Outside of one RBI from Rafaela, the offense came from a couple of unlikely places. Tsung-Che Cheng contributed two RBIs and Carlos Narvaez knocked in a run as well. Jake Bennett continued to dazzle since being recalled to the major-league roster. He tossed seven innings of zero-run, four-strikeout baseball for the win. Greg Weissert and Jovani Moran closed out the game with no runs given up as well.

In game three, the Red Sox managed to win a close game instead of counting on blowing the other team out of the water. Caleb Durbin knocked in both runs for the Red Sox on a two-run home run. Other than that, though, there was little to talk about offensively. Only Wilyer Abreu, Gonzalez, and Wong contributed hits to the team for this game. On the pitching side, a returning Patrick Sandoval looked really good on his limited pitch count. He tossed 4.1 innings while allowing one run and striking out five. Tyron Guerrero, Whitlock. Slaten, and Aroldis Chapman all contributed out of the bullpen in the win, with Chapman securing the save.

Mets Series: For teams that were similar in almost every way just a few weeks ago, the Red Sox rolled into NYC and showed the Mets what a turnaround looks like. In game one, both Anthony Seigler and Abreu homered, driving in four of the six runs. Masataka Yoshida contributed the other two RBIs on the day. Sonny Gray pitched six innings of one-run baseball while striking out three, but he’s somehow not an All-Star. Guerrero, Whitlock, and Weissert all contributed out of the pen, with Weissert giving up an earned run as well.

In game two, the Red Sox tossed another shut out. Yoshida and Monasterio both homered in the win, accounting for all four of the runs for the team. Eduardo Rivera tossed 3.2 innings while striking out three in the start after being recalled from Worcester. Weissert, Moran, Slaten, and Coulombe all came out of the bullpen to help secure the win. It would be Coulombe’s last outing for the Sox though, as he was designated for assignment almost immediately following the game.

Game three was a sight to behold, and something that should give every Red Sox fan confidence moving forward. The Sox were outdueled for the majority of game three and the sole reason it went to extra innings was thanks to a Francisco Lindor error and a Duran bloop that likely should have been caught. Dave O’Brien called this game ‘the most memorable win of the season’ and he hit the nail on the head. The Red Sox proved they could win by playing small ball and taking advantage of mistakes made by the opposition. That’s what good teams always do, and the Red Sox are flirting dangerously close with being a good team as we head into the All-Star Break. The pitching was a bit wonky in this one as Tolle was working with a pitch count. He only tossed 3.2 innings, giving up one run while striking out seven. He was followed by recently recalled Brayan Bello who was dominant, as per usual, out of the bullpen. He threw 4.1 innings, striking out five, and allowing one earned run. Chapman and Whitlock came out of the bullpen to put the game away. On offense, Seigler, Monasterio, and Duran all came through to drive in RBIs so the Sox could walk away with their third series sweep in a row.
