Sitting in the 3rd base stands about 1/2 way to the fence. The Red;s catcher, Ernie Lombardi (6'3" 230 lbs laces on a little over the 3rd baseman's head, and it hits the wall on one bounce. About 40 or 50 kids couldn't believe a line drive stay in the air that long. Of course we were young and impressionable. But how did it stay hidden in my memory box until Devers hit that home run last nigght?

I guess both were historic.

I am impressed that you were able to pull that out of your memory box. :)

That line drive HR from Devers last night had almost no height.

A great name from the past. Considered the slowest runner to ever play MLB, Ernie still had a lifetime batting average of .306. Ernie, not surprisingly, holds the ML record for hitting into DP's. He'd hit the ball so hard to RF that on more than a few occasions he'd be thrown out at first by the RF. Said of Ernie "he was so slow it seemed like he not only had a piano on his back, but also the guy tuning it." But he was definitely a great hitter.
