Kid walks into Monks Grocery, Magoun Sq., Somerville, July, 1948

“I want to bet on the Red Sox today. They’re playing the Yankees, right?.”

“How old are you, kid/”

“What’s the difference? It’s illegal anyway.”

“Good point| Six to five, take your pick. How much?”

“30 cents. That means I’ll win a quarter, right? Here’s my 30 cents.”

“Come by in half an hour or so.”

Guy reading the Sporting News pipes up, “That game was over 20 minutes ago, Monk.

Sox won 2-1. You owe the kid 55 cents!”

“I know. Did you notice the holes in his stockings?”

Kid goes home, tells his little sister, “I won 25 cents betting the Sox today. I can pick up my money in half an hour. Monk never knows what’s going on!”
