RF in Fenway for this lumbering brute? Lets be real. He's either a C or a 1b' date=' thats about it.[/quote']

That was more or less my thinking as well. With his size, I couldn't really see him playing in the outfield.

Personally I think the kid's a catcher. He's shown a real ability there and didn't look lost behind the plate in some pretty crucial situations down the stretch last year.

They put him out there with the season on the line in the last 2 games and he didn't kill us (our problems in those 2 games came down to the bullpen and other factors of the D)`. I think people may be overreacting to the stuff about Lavs's glove.

That's great to hear. If true, it meanns good news for us. No one really doubts his ability to hit, but it was his defensive game that was considered to be his main weakness, so if that isn't as bad as people have been led to believe, then I'm very happy to hear that. I still see him as a backup C and DH, because I'm quite a fan of Salty, but it's comforting to know that he'll be better than we're led to believe when the times come where we have to put Lavarnway behind the plate.

Cafardo has some good stuff on Lavarnway in todays Globe:

L. made a good impression last year, and is highly thought of around baseball.

I hope they don't keep him embedded in AAA too long--as they are apt to do with the kids.

Tuck is working with him, and hopefully he gets a good look in ST.

Cafardo, by the way, is the guy to read these days at the Globe. He often echoes the views of the Red Sox FO--do I hear you, LL/Bobby V.? Can't get a fix on whether Oswalt is now on their radar, though C. implies the heat is up.
