But who do you hit 9th?

If Ellsbury keeps hitting like he's hitting right now, no reason to hit him 9th, Crawford and his 20 million paycheck are not hitting 9th, and ditto for Pedroia who is the best hitter of the three.

Any of them hitting 9th isn't as much a tactical blunder as hitting Gonzalez 5th, IMO. Lesser of two evils.

That's a direct consequence of the stubborn notion that Crawford needs to hit third IMO. I'd much rather see Pedey-Gonzales-Youk, specially against lefties.

Call it back-patting if you'd like, but i've been whining about Crawford's inability to hit lefties since the rumor that they would sign him started floating around. How do you hit a platoon player third?

The question is how long Crawford lasts in the 3-hole. Still there tonite against a righthander. Still hasn't done anything, 0-3 last time I looked.

Ellsbury, Ortiz and AdGon know the season has started. I'm not sure about the rest.

This is obviously starting to become a real problem. I don't think there's any way you can justify hitting Crawford 3rd, but the same could be said for him hitting 7th. I don't care if Crawford and Pedroia both hate hitting lead off, one of them needs to do it. They're both too good of hitters to not have in front of Gonzalez and Youk.

So give me your ideal lineup as of now.

1-Crawford

2-Pedroia

3-Gonzalez

4-Youkilis

5-Ortiz

6-Drew

7-Scutaro

8-Saltalamacchia

9-Ellsbury

After he was initially signed I proposed (along with a few others here) the idea of having him hit #2 with Pedroia hitting 3rd, and I think I'm still in favor of that idea:

Ellsbury

Crawford

Pedroia

Gonzalez

Youkilis

Ortiz

Drew/Cameron

Salty

Scutaro

Looks like this one is coming together tonight. I hope they stick with this one for atleast a few games.

I originally liked Craw 3 and Pedey 2. But thinking more about it - I really like this line up.

First off, you're going to see very few double plays in the first inning with Ells and Craw hitting back to back. Also, when Ells or Craw is on base, Pedey is going to get fed fastball after fastball and he's going to absolutely mash those. Not to mention the huge hole on the right side of the infield that is left by the first baseman holding on the runner paired with the 2nd baseman having to cheat to cover the bag on a steal. I know he gets a lot of that with Ellsbury 1 and Pedey 2, but with Ells 1, Craw 2, Pedey 3, his chances of seeing those situations rises.

1-Ells 2-Craw 3-Ped 4-AdGon 5-Youks for tonite.

Tito is good at manipulating lineups. He's still trying to figure this lineup out with the new guy.

I like this one--the speed is up front. L or R pitching. Don't change it.

But Tito, why didn't you do this in spring training? I guess they didn't anticipate any problems.

hopefully crawford and dustin switch IMO

15 pushups every HR? That's guaranteed to keep you in shape just with Lackey and Beckett pitching.

I can definitely live with this lineup. Let's see how they fare tonight.

Ok, so I will throw it out there again.

JD Drew to leadoff.

Ellsbury and Crawford have been terrible. We have not gotten anything out of the spot, time for another change.

This seems pretty out there, but hell, Ortiz could hit leadoff as well as Ellsbury/Crawford have so far this year.

I will say though that I would prefer to keep Crawford there and let him get through this since I think he should be hitting leadoff long-term.

I want scut leading off because he seems to not care about where he hits and hit much better lead off last year than anyone has done this season. I like going with him leading him off

yeah I think that they will both turn it on but what I can remember about the best offense in sox history from 2003-2008 the key was the bottom of the order and how they could turn it over and keep the pressure on the pitcher through out the order.

Good to have a balance throughout the order I think

I hate this lineup. 4 straight lefties from 4-7 leaves them very vulnerable. And again, Scutaro leadoff sounds like a really bad idea.

JD Drew hitting leadoff today.

FINALLY.....Ive been calling for it since spring training (and you all thought I was crazy :)).
