Soriono right now is worth elite-level money, but using his Papelbon's arbitration numbers as a benchmark for his salary is illogical because in free agency, players are paid for what they're worth, rather than 20% more than the year before. Soriono will be in that 10-12 per year range.

I agree with this, so I don't see how YS thinks we can get Soriano plus 2 quality arms for the price of Paps plus 1 quality arm.

The arbitrator will give the decision to the party that is closer to market value. He doesn't just pull it out of his ass.

look up some arbitration cases. that's not how it works in real life

Don't both sides submit figures? And since you can't get a cut in pay, don't both sides submit figures that incude raises? What criteria does the arbitrator look to in making a determination if not FMV?

Market values

Good relievers - 3-5 million a year.

Great relievers/good closers 6-7 million a year.

Great closers 8-12

Rivera costs 15.

The Sox might be a little short, but Papelbon's 11 million could go a long way towards fixing this bullpen, and helping this team. The simple fact is, he's not worth 11 million a year for 4 ERA and a 75% save chance, he just isn't. Everyone complains about guys not performing for the money, but this is one of the cases where they can just get rid of the player. Non-tender him, or trade him, and your team is in the clear.

i just threw names out there, my point was that it would make more sense to trade papelbon and use that $12 million to sign a couple free agent relievers than it would to pay papelbon more than he's worth and watch him continue to decline

i think you have to admit that it is in fact possible to trade papelbon AND improve the bullpen

how is papelbon going to be paid market value if he's already making $9 million and he's guaranteed a raise? he's not worth that much money

exactly. a700 complains that we make bad free agent signings, yet he's convinced that we should keep papelbon even though he's guaranteed to make something like $12 million next year. if papelbon was a free agent, would that be a good contract? (to save time, that is rhetorical)
