Second , along with 4L

I'm also curious to see how many 1-2-3 innings he's pitched this year....

K rate going down , BB going up so as WHIP

And on a brighter note' date=' Heidi looked like a Meth addict tonight.[/quote']

Some days your the windshield, and some days you're the bug.

Papelbon: 2.76 ERA, 1.12 WHIP.

Bard: 2.13 ERA, 0.9 WHIP.

Not saying Bard should close right now, but they're clearly trending in opposite directions.

Anyone want to venture a guess as to how the sox will fall apart?

The image is of course from a dandy in Baltimore last year, but you get the picture.... a Papelbomb Experience

Every now and again I'm embarrassed to be a Sox fan.

this guy puts a 163 ERA+ in a "down" year and you all go ballistic when he blows his second save in the third month of play. It's like we can't stand prosperity.

Who cares if Bard is better? We need them both right now. You're allowed to have more than one capable reliever you know.

Updated stats:

Papelbon: 3.64 ERA, 1.23 WHIP.

Bard: 2.13 ERA, 0.86 WHIP.

It is what it is.

You won't have both relievers if the one who's looking for the most money isn't the one with the better overall performance.

Don't let your love for the player blind you. There is something wrong with Jonathan Papelbon.

Nice comeback today against the best, statistically speaking, pitcher in baseball ball.

I liked our plate discipline up until the 7th-8th inning. Nava, McDonald, Bard, Scutaro.

I don't like watching Tito manage the NL game. He falls in love with the "double switch" and all of a sudden turns into Eistein; instead on another at bat by Papi, we get Tek and Cameron into the game. Youk doesn't even get an at bat? You pitch to Giambi with a base open in the 9th? Walk him, get a ground ball and you're still playing. It's painful to watch.

Reddick. Can't get the bunt down after the lead off man gets on in the 8th? You're a major league ball player playing in the NL park and you can't bunt?

Lots of blame to go round here...

I say we sign Papelhick to a Contract extension. C'mon...

I'm just saying, this is not a knee-jerk reaction. I've been analyzing Papelbon's counting stats and peripherals since the implosion at NYS, and the drop-off is astounding. No matter how much you like the guy, it's undeniable he's no longer an elite closer:

The following stats don't include tonight, and if they did, the line would be much, much uglier:

First off, let's get rid of the "Maybe he's unlucky" factor:

Career BABIP: .297.

2010 BABIP: .228

His xFIP is 4.71 (It had never been as high as 4.00 since he took over the closer role)

His BB/9 (3.68), K/9 (7.67) and K/BB (2.08)are atrocious, slightly above average (but still a career low) and atrocious respectively.

His H/9 , at 6.4, is very good, but how much of that is luck? Combined with the massive amount of BB's, it really puts a dent in his WHIP.

But the most disturbing thing is that 1.2 HR/9, he had never had it climb above 1.00 since inheriting the closer role.

And this is not a three-month, or half a season thing, since most of the erosion in his overall peripherals started last year, when he posted career highs basically across the board (BB/9, HR/9, WHIP). The excuse last year was that "he set the bar too high" the previous year. What's the excuse now that his peripherals are declining even further?

This is a nice post. The only thing I'd add is that it is better that this is happening now than in Sept/Oct because we still have time to fix this.

2.5 games out. oh well... we may eventually get over the hump. First place hump...

Hey, we're obviously in a much better spot than chasing third place and digging out of the hole we were once in.

And I joined this board on the Day that Papelbon blew it against the Angels in the playoffs. This guy -- Papelbon-- hounds me! LOL.

The obvious choice for "goat" of the game is Paps- deservedly so.

However, our manager assumed too much, we couldn't get a bunt down when we needed it, Ortiz was yanked too early, Youk never got an at bat, and Lackey was again eminently hittable.

Posted
Db, the sox did miss a few opportunities, but in the end the game was yours. If someone told u prior to the game that Lackey vs Jimenez would come down to Paps in the game for a save situation I think u take it. Bottom line is Paps blew it

Dear LYN-NAY,

My apologies for using the possessive pronoun "your" when clearly the proper application was the contraction "you're", the lazy man's way of writing "you are". Even properly applied, a contraction is simply not acceptable grammar for reasonable composition.

I clearly assaulted the delicate sensibilities of one of our scholars a few posts above; I would (and notice I didn't use the contraction "I'd") never, ever want to disappoint you even a fraction of the degree that I let the site down last night.

Yours in baseball and correct grammar,

YAZMAN
