Considering how the Boston Red Sox handled a stretch of games against four of the majors’ elite teams, facing the lowly Kansas City Royals at home appears to be a far simpler task. With Daisuke Matsuzaka on the mound for the first time since flirting with a no-hitter, the Red Sox hope to extend their longest winning streak of the season to six Thursday night as they begin a four-game set with the Royals.

Not only has Boston played 11 of its last 13 games on the road, but its last four series were against the reigning World Series champion Yankees and division leaders Minnesota, Philadelphia and Tampa Bay. The Red Sox (27-21) have still managed to win eight of nine and five in a row, putting their mediocre start behind them. They became the first team to sweep major league-best Tampa Bay this week, outscoring the host Rays 19-4 in three games.

“We started out real slow and everybody kind of panicked,” second baseman Dustin Pedroia said after Wednesday’s 11-3 victory. “We have confidence we’re going to win a lot of games, and hopefully the way we’re playing will continue for a long time.” David Ortiz and Adrian Beltre have keyed Boston’s run. Ortiz is 16 for 39 (.410) with six homers and 16 RBIs in his last 11 games, while Beltre has six multihit efforts in his last eight games, going 4 for 5 with two homers and six RBIs on Wednesday.

The team’s starting pitching has been arguably even more impressive. Boston starters have a 1.60 ERA in the last eight games after posting a 5.18 ERA before that. Matsuzaka (3-1, 5.76 ERA) has allowed five or more runs three times since coming off the disabled list, but his other two outings have been brilliant. Saturday’s effort may have been the best of his career. He lost a no-hitter on Juan Castro’s bloop single with two outs in the eighth inning of a 5-0 win at Philadelphia.

“I’ve been going from one extreme to the other, but of course, I want to keep going in a good way,” Matsuzaka told the Red Sox’s official website through an interpreter. “On a good night like Saturday, I’m able to pitch like I imagine and the pitches come out of my hand just like I picture. Without overthinking it too much, I just hope I can keep going in that direction.” Matsuzaka struck out 10 Royals in his major league debut April 5, 2007, a total that still matches his career high. He’s posted a 2.84 ERA while winning both of his starts against Kansas City.

The Royals (19-28) have been surprisingly good on offense this season, leading the majors with a .280 batting average - thanks in part to Billy Butler. Butler went 2 for 4 with a home run in Wednesday’s 5-2 win over Texas, raising his average to .348 and helping Kansas City snap a three-game losing streak.

“It’s quite impressive to watch a young man have that good of an idea and that good of an eye and put together consistent good at-bats time after time after time,” said manager Ned Yost, who has gone 7-5 since taking over for Trey Hillman. Yost will send Brian Bannister (3-3, 4.73) to the Fenway mound, where he has lost all three of his previous starts - one reason the Royals are 6-20 at Boston since the start of 2003. The right-hander is 0-4 with a 5.87 ERA in four overall starts against Boston, but he’ll be looking to win a third straight outing overall. He held Colorado to two runs in 7 1-3 innings of a 9-2 victory Friday night.

News and notes from Fenway: Ellsbury's ribs OK but sore

Posted by Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff May 27, 2010 03:25 PM

The MRIs and CT scan taken in Tampa Bay on Jacoby Ellsbury's ribs were reviewed by the Sox medical team and indications are that Ellsbury did not suffer a new injury or re-injury to his ribs according to a team source. Ellsbury continues to have soreness in the ribcage area and was scheduled to meet with Dr. Thomas Gill this afternoon to go over the next course of action for treatment of the soreness.

The Sox may consider the disabled list if it's decided that Ellsbury needs time to allow the soreness to go away. Ellsbury is not in today's lineup.

Rib injuries and diving do not go together. I was worried that he would be coming back too soon and re-aggravate his ribs while diving for a ball... what do you know, it pretty much happened. This really sucks. I think it's time to explore options to bring in a real OF to play LF.

State of the Sox: The Sox return to Fenway from a 5-1 road trip. They have won five straight, eight of nine and 16 of the last 23. They are 5.5 games out of first place and two games behind the Yankees in the wild card race.

Royal flush: The Sox took two of three in Kansas City from April 9-11. They are 13-5 against the Royals over the last three seasons. The Royals have won only five of their last 20 games at Fenway Park.

Matsuzaka mania: Dice-K threw 7.2 hitless innings against the Phillies in his last start. He finished with eight shutout innings, facing 27 hitters. Matsuzaka is 2-0 with a 2.84 ERA against Kansas City in two career starts. He last faced them in May 22, 2008 at Fenway Park, going 5.2 innings in an 11-8 win.

Stat of the day: Kevin Youkilis has walked 29 times this month. The franchise record for walks in May is 30 by Carl Yastrzemski in 1971. Youkilis leads the majors with 40 walks.

David now a Goliath: Ortiz has homered six times in his last 11 games. He is hitting .368 in May (25 of 68) with nine homers and 23 RBI. He is hitting .419 (18 of 43) in his last 12 games with 16 RBI.

Ortiz has at least one RBI in each of his last four games, seven of his last eight and nine of his last 11.

League leaders The Red Sox are 16-7 in May, the best record in the American League.

Pitching in: Red Sox starters are 7-1 with a 1.60 ERA in the last eight games. They have allowed 10 earned runs (six by John Lackey) in their last 56.1 innings.

16-7 in May so far. That is sweet. just keep months like these coming please.
