That should be a major headache for the Yanks come playoff time.

And in the future. CC is good, but Burnett is a #3 at best, Joba looks really bad, Pettitte is old and not intimidating in any way (no better than a #4) and Mitre isn't an MLB pitcher except for a team with an offense like the Yankees' offense.

I imagine that this offseason they'll get right back into the "expensive FA pitcher with questionable stuff" market that they managed to get themselves out of the past few years. Joba doesn't look like a good starter.

I agree 150%

I do not see the Yankees getting to the WS with their pitching. I know a lot of you do not want to hear this, but it is very true. Sorry! The offense can be stopped with all the good pitching in the playoffs.

Well we're just gonna have to hope for the best' date=' huh?[/quote']

Yes you are. You also might want to start praying you do not have to play the Tigers because you might not get out of the first round with their pitching.

I'd rather play the Tigers than the Angels.

Either way they both have good pitching. I think you guys would have problems with both of them. I might put the edge with the Tigers as being the harder team because of they have Verlander and Jackson back to back.

But remember, the Tigers don't have a serviceable 3rd starter with Washburn hurt, plus their offense if inferior to Anaheim's with a bullpen that's just as, if not more, suspect.

So assuming the Yankees lose today, the lead will be 5 games (6 in the win column, 5 in the loss column).

The Yankees have three games with the Angels with this week, and the pitching match-ups are:

Pettitte vs. Saunders

Gaudin vs. Santana

Burnett vs. Kazmir

The Red Sox have four games with the Royals this week, and the pitching match-ups are:

Wakefield vs. DiNardo

Byrd vs. Greinke

Beckett vs. Hochevar

Buchholz vs. Hughes

I see the Yankees taking one of three, and the Red Sox taking three of four. That would put the lead at 3.5 games (4 in the win column, 3 in the loss column) heading into the weekend series. What does everyone else think?

its four in the loss column the red sox have two more games than the yankees. the sox are 89-59 and the yankees are 95-55 so it would be four in the loss column.

Verlander is a threat' date=' Jackson has yet to show he can do it in the biggest games.[/quote']

He has pitched very well all year. I am sure nothing is going to change in the playoffs.

That because you are a closet Sox fan' date=' ah?[/quote']

I've thought this as well,

Hmmmm.....there might be a chance to turn him to the light.

Here's what you're basically saying:

The playoffs for the Tigers could be one game, in a 5 game series they could be swept 3 games.

He has one chance to be the guy who "pitched very well all year" but he hasn't pitched tremendously for quite awhile.

He has a 6.12 ERA in September, and a 5.20 ERA between August and September. He's a decent pitcher, but he's still pretty young and the Yankees have a fantastic offense. I don't take it for granted that he'll pitch as well in Yankee stadium in October as he did against Baltimore in May.

Jackson doesn't concern me as much because, as example said, he has struggled lately. Although he lack of experience in big games isn't a big factor for me.

I've expressed a lot of concern about the Yankees blowing the division lead here. However, unlike most of the teams who have blown huge leads (1951 Dodgers, 1964 Phillies, 1978 Red Sox, 2007 Mets, etc.) the Yankees would still be in the postseason. I really don't buy into the whole momentum factor heading into the postseason. The 2006 Tigers were not very good down the stretch, blowing the division on the final day of the season, but still got in as the wild card. After losing their first playoff game they reeled off seven straight wins. The 2007 Phillies played really well down the stretch, winning the division on the final day of the season. They got swept in the first round.

If the Yankees get in as the wild card, due to the fact that they're still a really good team (and the crapshoot element of the posteason), they can still win the World Series. If that happens Yankee fans wouldn't care about the blown division.

However, with that being said, I will be very disappointed if the Yankees don't win the division.

This is what I am saying.

Yankees have CC that is it, IMO. Pettitte is hurt and not looking great, Burnett is look even worse and Joba is being f***ed with by them cutting his innings short, which IMO is stupid and could very well throw him off track.

Now, with all this said, I think the Yanks are made for a long season rather than a playoffs setting. Their offense will keep them a float in the regular season, but once they face good pitching there is a very good possibility they can get shut down. If that happens, they are in deep trouble because they do not have the pitching to keep them in games.
