Simple question.

Does Kalish have the upside/ceiling of a 5 tool, 20 + HR, 20+ SB, center fielder?

He's got 15 long ones and 19 SB's this year between Portland and Salem. If power is more likely to advance than speed then he seems like he's got a shot to me.

I'd be interested to see his effort, actually. I don't know how you could interpret Kalish's performance this year as anything but exciting, especially now it appears that his power is coming through,.

Kevin Goldstein at BP says he's a 20/20 guy.

I think he could get those numbers but I'm not sure if he'll play in CF. For some reason I imagine that he'll be a faster version of Trot Nixon eventually. I guess I go with what I know...

He should be a very productive member of this team or an excellent fully-developed trade piece.

His slugging, b.a, OBP and OPS #s have fallen since moving up to AA ball.

it also seems that hes discovered some power yet has lost some of his patience at the plate in Maine.

hes 21 and can run very well, how that .270 batting avg in Portland translates in the big leagues is a mystery..I dont think this guy will be helping us anytime soon unless he cuts down on his Ks and gets a little more patient at the plate..If he makes the club it will be on his speed, defense and occasional power.. Some Hrs will come as he gets older but if he wants the big show hes going to have to hit for a better avg with a little more patience at the plate, i dont see this guy blasting his way into the big leagues, hes got more Ellsbury in him than anything else.

Mr. Crunchy does have a point about the strikeouts. I've kind of attributed that to Kalish being underage for his level but it is a factor to keep half an eye on going forward.

So that sounds like he's becoming more selective about what he swings at but is still adjusting to the greater selectivity.

He is a 20/20 guy. Dont know how he fits into the sox plans though. For a large market club, he might not have the power to be a corner OFer and with Ellsbury in CF, he might not get the shot to break in at center. I think he's developed into a solid trade chip, and I would assume he is used as such unless there is some catastrophe in the OF or if Ellsbury is used in a blockbuster

Theo is all about value. Putting him at the 4th OF slot is a waste, especially when you consider Reddick is in the picture too. Regardless, I bet the sox try to fill RF internally after Drew leaves and they try to fill LF with a prime acquisition or a resign like Bay. Maybe, just maybe, they use RF for a positional battle and then deal off whomever loses.

He'll push Ellsbury out of the way.

About the K's, there is a positive relationship with K's and OBP and SLG%. It could be an indicator that he is waiting for his pitch to drive.

Ellsbury vs. Kalish would be an interesting debate. Ellsbury is one of those rare elite speedsters that really does what a lot of guys like Gathright or Willy Taveras are developed because someone's deluded themselves they can do. On the other hand Kalish is going to have gap power and perhaps more, for a much more complete 5 tool offensive profile -- but less base stealing speed at the big league level, more sneaky speed than blinding toolsy speed.

Kalish will have a higher OBP, and will be a threat to take the ball out of the park. He's the better offensive player.

Ellsbury had the advantage defensively, but every metric has him rated extremely poorly this year. I think he can bounce back, but Kalish's offensive upside is more valuable than Ellsbury's. If anyone is a hell of a 4th OF, it's Ellsbury.

Kalish is playing in A ball and AA ball and hasnt exactly burnt up the AA pitching.

Before we give him the offensive nod over Ellsbury, a man who has hit .300, stolen 55 bases and been an intrical part of this teams 07 w/series as well as a tremendous table setter this year Id like to see Kalish make it out of Portland.

In the AL East you best be able to hit 25 Hrs or at least .300 if youre going to start.

Kalish has 15hrs this year playing against guys who arent going to make the big show.

His power #s have come around nicely but I think Reddick is the better hitter between them 2.

Kalish is only 21 too, he has a lot of room to improve his patience as well.

Ellsburys #s come in the heat of the battle in the AL East where lefty hitters have a hard time homering to right field and Ells isnt the kind of guy who can go opposite field to use the monster ala Mo Vaughn and Boggs.

Impossible. Ellsbury doesn't hit the ball in the air enough' date=' and when he does, it doesn't go very far.[/quote']

Pop-ups leave the yard in NYY.

And you could rest assured he'd be lifting the ball a lot more in that joke of a stadium.

Which would probably result in feeble pop-ups, or routine fly-balls. Ellsbury has very little power. Even if it were true, how much HR's would Kalish hit in Yankee Stadium at his peak? 30?

Probably more.

Kalish has much more present and projectable power than Ellsbury, this is not under discussion.

Not to mention he can naturally lift the ball.

Ellsbury has the wheels to manufacture a little power by legging out doubles, but he's not here to hit bombs. It's not part of the job description and frankly I'd rather he focused on hitting opposite field line drives. His job is getting on base and making pitchers sweat, and he does OK at it. His job is also scoring runs, and he does pretty well at that too.

Before we make Kalish a 30Hr hitter I'd like to see him slug a bit higher in AA ball.

It would be so huge if he could play his way onto our roster next spring but unless he gets on a bonemeal and dolemite diet his ceiling next year is in Rhode Island.

Ellsbury is what he is, a good leadoff hitter and table setter.

a guy who should hit .300 the rest of his career and should also win a couple of gold gloves along the way. A perrenial 40sb/105 runs/10 triples/.305 avg a year is expected, a little more power will also come to him as he ages, i dont care about his power #s as long as he continues to set the table and score runs, thats his forte', he shouldnt f*** with whats gotten him here.
