First of all, he didn't hit first for a significant time. Avering 12 games a year at leadoff is not significant. The guy is a middle of the order run producer who is averaging 120 runs produced a season. Not good enough for a winning offense. And not good enough for the financial commitment the team has made to him.

And again, the biggest issue is the lock in. When you lock a player in like this, it prohibits the team from upgrading if he underperforms, as Drew has done.

Drew played fantastic last year, and is playing pretty good this year.

A hitter's job is not to make outs.

JD Drew is pretty damn good at not making outs.

He had one good month since he's been here, June 2008. The rest of the time, he's been a drag on the offense.

The reason he averages 64 RBIs per year isn't because it's a team stat or because he's hurt all the time. The reason he doesn't drive in runs is because he hits under .200 with runners in scoring position. That's pathetic.

You could sit his $14 million on the bench every night and he'd make no outs.

Would he be worth it?

JD Drew career OPS with RISP: .892 with a .278 BA.

JD OPS with RISP with the Red Sox: .810 with a .233 BA.

This year, Drew is hitting .173 with RISP (.667 OPS. And frankly, working a walk with runners in scoring position is not my idea of a winning ballplayer. But of course I realize that many here are overly enamored with OPS.)

He simply does not produce.

Working a walk means you didn't make an out. This is never a bad thing.

what is his OBP with RISP and what is the next hitters avg. with RISP?

Irrelevant.

If he's not producing runs, he's not worth the money.

Jack Cust has the same career OBP as Drew and only makes 500' date='000.[/quote']

Torii Hunter has a lowe OBP and makes 17 mill.

Your point being?

Jack Cust is underrated...

The question isn't whether Drew is a good guy or can manage to get on base the 37% of the time it doesn't matter. The question is whether he's worth $70 million. And that's a very easy question to answer by looking at his production.

I didn't make any point about Torii Hunter.

i would say he isnt quite worth 70 mil but there are a lot of players who are overpayed and id rather overpay for someone like drew than someone like Lugo, and at least Drew doesnt drag the team down, he is a valuable part of the team.

What i meant was the comparison is not valid.

My point about moderately paid players with relatively high OBP is that the value of a high OBP player, absent consistent production, is relatively low.

Cust= OBP-Defense.

There's a reason why he lasted so long to make the Majors.

I still think people drastically underrate OBP' date=' it is the doorway to runs.[/quote']

Maybe five years ago. Not today.

The underrating of OBP has been so promoted that OBP is now overrated.
