It's easier to slip it into a 600 pound bag of grease.

I like Chone Figgins. But I'm not wild about signing a guy over 30 to be a light hitting speedster in CF, especially if he hasn't played that position that much in his career. The chances that you wind up paying for essentially Juan Pierre with infield flexibility are a little high for me to completely ignore.

I think that at this stage of their respective careers, Ellsbury is pretty clearly the better option.

I wouldn't mind going after Adrian Gonzalez but I think your chances of actually landing him are about the same as trading for Pujols. I think we have to wait and see if San Diego is interested in dangling him to restock with prospects before that line of discussion goes anywhere. I have much more confidence that the Marlins will part with Hanley than that the Padres will part with Gonzalez.

San Diego already listened on him, and he almost got dealt in the failed Hernandez deal.

He's a goner this offseason.

And you wouldn't trade Ellsbury in a package for Hanley?

Really?

That's a tougher call. I'm not wild about your idea of a replacement though, especially if it involves a multi year commitment. Figgins is good, but he's a speedster on the wrong side of 30. Those don't tend to age well.

If we think Reddick'd hit he might be able to replace Ells at center himself, but if we blow the farm for both Hanley and Adrian, he's gone too.

I think Gonzo is more available than HanRam. HanRam is on a team that is still atleast somewhat in contention and is the only real marquee player in a year where they are opening a new stadium they need HanRam not to just win but to sell tickets, Id rather get HanRam but Gonzo is more available IMHO.

In that case i wonder if picking up Michael Young from the cash-strapped Rangers might be a good move to follow up a Gonzalez acquisition. Young isn't a middle of the order bat but he's a huge measure above what we have right now and the cost in money is high enough that the cost in talent wouldn't be. He's got extensive experience at other infield positions as well, so if we found out later we could land Hanley, Young wouldn't really stand in the way.

I was actually thinking of picking up Figgins in a 1-year deal.

Oh, and you don't like my idea of replacement?

Replacing our .302/.333 SLG SS with a .400/552 bat?

Replace our .320 OBP crippled 3B for a 30 HR/100 RBI bat.

As for Figgins, he's having a much better year than Ells, and is the ideal bench player if convinced to sign a multiyear deal, since he can play every position except C adequately.

Sure, my ideas of replacement should convince no one.

Just like the "marginal upgrade" from Teixeira right?

No freakin' way. This will be Figgins' one big shot at a contract. There's too many teams who need a leadoff man for Figgins to even think of looking at a 1 year deal.

Someone will sign Figgy to be a second baseman at a commitment of more money and years than we will spare for him to be our CF.

I'd honestly rather give Reddick a shot at our CF position and do whatever it takes to get Hanley and shut the revolving door that is SS for the long term.

why would a switch-hitting leadoff man with 30+ SBs, an OBP of .391 and an OPS of .790 accept a one-year deal? what a ridiculous thought

I actually hadn't checked Figgins' overall stats and hadn't realized he was having such a fantastic year.

No need to get butthurt about it.

Indeed, but we are flinging "fantasy baseball-ish" ideas.

Is that necessarily a problem?

in all fairness Dipre did say it was an idea that was very unlikely before he ever posted it...

Btw Dipre, where does your username come from?

Lol it's my last name IRL.

You can't advocate trading for Michael Young when you are against trading for Cristian Guzman.

Young's contract is among the worst in the game.
