WE NEED PITCHING. Who the f*** is dependable past Beckett and Lester? Penny has been inconsistent this year, Smoltz has blown, Wake is wake, Dice-K might not be ready or useful, and Buchholz is still to young.

I'd rather give up more for Halladay than to get Gonzalez. 1. Our rotation has bigger needs than our offense. 2. Halladay is one of the top 3 pitchers in baseball. Gonzalez isn't even a top 3 1B, let alone hitter.

GET HALLADAY.

Lowell will be on the DL for the rest of the year if we get Gonzalez.

I'd sandwich youk between gonzo and ortiz just to keep the L-R-L matchup.

I agree with TedWilliams101 to get Halladay

we have a better shot winning a WS with a top 3 of Halladay-Beckett-Lester than having Gonzalez in our lineup

It's been obvious the Ricciardi's asking price for Halladay is not realistic, as many teams are finding out. As Marlins president David Samson said, JP wants "two left legs, a right arm and a left cerebellum" for Doc. But maybe the Dodgers will cave in--they might be nervous over the Lee trade to the Phillies. Gonzalez is one of the best in the game, and, unlike Halladay, has youth on his side. I think it was documented somewhere that Petco takes away 40% of his homeruns. We have no power coming up in the system, we need someone who can mash on a consistent basis. AG is a .282/.363/.509/.872 hitter in SD which could put him close to Youk numbers at Fenway

I hate to be negative, but i don't think we will be getting Halladay.

I'd take Pujols' date=' Cabrera, Fielder, and Howard over Gonzalez. Again, point is power hitting 1B are a dime a dozen.[/quote']

Are power hitting 1B who make $4M/yr at 27 years old a dime a dozen?

Go get one of them then.

I'm sure they're all available.

That wasn't the point. Dipre was using Petco as a reason why Gonzo's stats don't reflect how good he was. I agree, but I still don't think he's a top 3 1B. It has nothing to do with who is available.

The point is Halladay would make a much much bigger impact (especially in the playoffs) than Gonzo.

Then go get Halladay, Mr. Theo.

The point is, that the Red Sox are trying to get whichever of the two is actually available without throwing the farm out the window.

I wonder if any other top pitchers are available then. I'm just very very worried about this rotation.

Not really.

Lower tier stuff like Bannister is what really seems to be available.

Heyman on MLB Network says the Sox are pushing very hard on Gonzalez and Padres ownership is currently huddling. Says they are in love with Casey Kelly' date=' more than Buchholz.[/quote']

Hmm this is interesting, did you hear it first hand or got it off somewhere else?

I saw it on MLB Network

Olney reports that the Padres and Red Sox had made very little progress in their discussions about Adrian Gonzalez as of 9pm CST.

This is from MLBTR

Would the team be willing to use Kelly as the centerpiece and keep Buchholz' date=' or do they value Kelly more than Buchholz?[/quote']

I think they would center a deal around Buchholz but if the Pads wanted Buchholz as well I think theo might throw him in.

Baseball tonight, just now saying no deal will be made for Gonzalez, Halladay unlikely, only major deal which may happen is a three team deal, with VMart heading to Boston, and LaRoche being dealt.

Sox-Padres still in play

Posted by Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff July 30, 2009 11:48 PM

There were indications late last night that trade talks between the Padres and Red Sox concerning first baseman Adrian Gonzalez were still active and would likely peak today before the trade deadline.

Padres GM Kevin Towers was said to be asking for "a ton" for Gonzalez according to one major league source familiar with the Padres' thinking. Some of the names being discussed included Clay Buchholz, Lars Anderson, Jed Lowrie, Ryan Westmoreland, Justin Masterson and others, but no word on whether the Red Sox had offered a package for Gonzalez.

Less was known about the status of talks between Cleveland and Boston for Victor Martinez. The teams have been discussing Martinez for quite some time, but the Red Sox have been reluctant to deliver Buchholz for the catcher/first baseman.

Toronto GM J.P. Ricciardi remained pessimistic about trading Roy Halladay, but as one team's top advisor said last night, "where there's a huge pitcher available some teams don't show their best hand until the final moments of the deadline. You might see that with Boston at the end."
