What makes anyone certain that Teahen is even available? He's still under the Royals control through at least next year and is a solid .300/.350/.450 type hitter. Only 27 years old to boot. I can't imagine they let him go cheaply

The GM I believe in an interview stated who was untouchable. Teahen was not on that list. I'll look for the article.

The Royals aren't trading any of their core players this year, according to Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star. GM Dayton Moore said some players just aren't available.

"You're not going to see us unloading Gil Meche and Zack Greinke and Joakim Soria and Alex Gordon and Billy Butler," Moore said. "You're not going to see us doing that. You're just not."

Moore didn't say as much, but Dutton suggests the Royals are open to dealing David Dejesus and Mark Teahen. They need a center fielder and could negotiate a deal with injured outfielder Coco Crisp or look for one in a trade. They're not expected to pick up Crisp's $8MM option for 2010, but remain open to a new deal with him

A couple weeks ago the Royals GM stated that Teahen was the team's most consistent player day in and day out and that he wouldn't be inclined to trade him.

I'm sure that was a message to other GM's. Pretty much saying "we aren't going to bend over and take it to trade Teahen." Most GM's usually don't come out and flatly say " we don't see him in out future, so we want to get rid of him". It's all a matter of leverage.

I've said that I'd like to see V-Mart at first for the Sox.

But after seeing Teahan in the recent series (SSS), I've reconsidered. Teahan can replace Lowell if or when necessary. Youk could go back to 1st. We'd upgrade our D and our offensive output.

What would it take to get the mighty Teahan?

If Teahen can pull his weight he might find himself a long term gig in Boston at 3B.

As far as his cost? Hard to gauge. Maybe a couple low level guys. A "B" level type prospect might be enough. It won't cost any of the big name guys though.

We might be surprised by what Moore would ask for Teahen. He is their best position player right now (though that isn't saying a ton) and he is having a good year this year, and he plays a position that's in some demand -- 3B's aren't easy to find just now.

I wouldn't assume that a couple B guys get it done at this point unless something leaks out that suggests it might. Teahen is all the Royals have as far as trading pieces, and they're not under any kind of mandate to actually move him. Moore is feeling some heat after a season where the Royals were supposed to push for .500 fell into the crapper, so he'll want to get this one right and get a return that makes an immediate impact on KC, so I don't think this will be done in a hurry and I think that the price might not be as cheap as I personally want it to be.

really? better than Billy Butler?

Well, yeah, actually.

Butler has a .782 OPS. Teahen is at .807 at the more premium position.

Butler is going to be a better player than Teahen at some point in his career, probably not too far in the future, but he's not there yet.

As deadline acquisitions go, Teahen is one of the more attractive possibilities in the league. Moore's going to want a return similar to the Casey Blake deal, which is a good place to start talking Teahen trades. The eqiuvalent value of Carlos Santana is definitely a steep price to pay for insurance at 3B.

This is one of the reasons I've backed off on the whole get-Teahen thing. I want him, but the price might not be worth it if all we're getting him for is part time work.

Well they are having basically the same season

And Dipreg .295 is plenty close to .300 to get my point across...

I was being sarcastic....

Victor Martinez really is the best solution to the problem. He can give Varitek days off and Lowell days off. There's no real other impact bat out there who can do that besides Russ Martin who sucks this year anyway.

Actually I thought they were going to get Mauer, because he caught R. A. Dickey on a regular basis. Could be wrong.

can he catch a knuckler?

Don't care, I'd like us to move beyond the Wake caddy days. Worse comes to worse Varitek can do an adequate job.

No he can't.

We need to get past the whole idea that Varitek will handle the knuckleball on anything but an emergency basis. He's made it clear in the past that he doesn't want to do that and his style doesn't really work with the K'ball.

The guy wasn't handling the knuck well in his prime, what on earth makes you think he wants to deal with it at age 37?

They have a couple trade chips in Teahen, Dejesus, Jacobs and Guillen.

Never hit .300.

His .295 is based upon a .335+ BABIP, and for a guy with that little patience and who's a bit prone to striking out, that is unsustainable.

DeJesus is having an off year and Jacobs and Guillen have negative value at the moment.

That makes it even worse...........

But he's still around 15+ points above his average, and his K/BB is horrible.

He doesn't k a ton, but he doesn't walk either.

I thought you were saying his BABIP this season was around .335, I hadn't checked it myself. Either way I'd feel as comfortable saying he stays around .290 then that he drops significantly below that for the rest of this season.

He'll probably stay above .285, but really, this guy is quite lucky in the BA department, however, his power is good, since he slugs quite good in that cavern of a ballpark.

Well, I think it's pretty clear that we need to do something about Lowell. I admire his attitude for wanting to stay active and live up to his contract as best he can, but his speed has gone from a point where you could shrug it off and say he's there to hit, not run, to the point where it's a major offensive liability. The guy can't stretch a double dependably and cannot score from second against a half decent outfielder. Those hard hit liners off the monsters that were once the Mike Lowell special are now singles. It's time to start the transition to someone else -- if we had anyone else.

You heard the quotes. He's rested and fresh. He feels great. Bottom line this is as good as it gets for Mike Lowell for the remainder of this season at least.

We need to find that transitional bat who can take us forward towards a post-Lowell world. Dunno who it is and at this point I don't care. SOMETHING, however, must be done. And looking at what we have in-system and their chances of being that guy this year, unless you want to count on Aaron Bates we will need to look outside the system for that guy at least in the near term.

Time to get cracking, Mr. Epstein!

Lowell is a .400+ hitter since returning from the DL.
