He's above average, not great. (Remember, the average includes the likes of Manny, Braun, Willingham, Soriano, etc. etc.)

You named some of the worst defensive LF in baseball. Just because Bay's not as bad as them doesn't mean he's above average.

But they are in the average.

Fact is, it is not a well played position across the leagues. Take a look around. Bay is clearly better than the average LFer.

From a stats stand point, Jason Bay hasn't made an error yet this season. He has 6 assists on the season, only David Dejesus has more. He is 3rd in MLB with a 2.26 Range Factor and 8th in MLB in Revised Zone Rating. Consider all the great diving catches and out-of-zone catches he has made it looks pretty convincing that he is above average.

I do find fielding stats to be fairly flawed. For example, Adam Dunn is ranked 4th in MLB with a Revised Zone Rating of .899, but clearly, he isn't a great left fielder.

However, try coming up with a list of 10 or more left fielders that are clearly better than Bay. It isn't all that easy.

Manny always used to rack up the assists in left field and he had a HORRIBLE arm. It's because left field is so short in Fenway and balls take all kinds of strange bounces out there so baserunners often get caught off guard.

The most advanced defensive stat we have (UZR) has him as well below average. And Zone Rating has him as the third worst LF in baseball.

What is up with Lester's K spike?

He k'ed 152 last year.

He's on pace for 190+ this year.

He's decided to forget about pitching to contact and just dominate

its amazing that his SO/9 has gone up by almost 4 while his BB/9 has stayed almost exactly the same as last season
