Ellsbury won his spot in CF, and sent a veteran Coco packing. Gardner hasn't. And has to split time with Melky. That should be enough to stem the argument there.

And until he is the full time CF, it will be hard to win an argument for "Gardner vs Ellsbury" discussions that crop up.

Full time will always beat out 4th OF SSS.

Or at least logic would seem to dictate so.

Well, Gardner seemed to make a case today. 5-5 with a triple and a homer. His line now...

.305/.375/.443.

Ellsbury?

.305/.352/.399

Just sayin

It's easy to have nice numbers when you're a bench player coming off a 5-5. Gardner's a .269/.333/.376 hitter in the majors with 279 at bats. Ellsbury's a .296/.348/.409 hitter in the majors with 948 at bats. Better across the board.

Yeah, BIG difference in power. Ells and Gardner have the same amount of homers and Gardner's SLG is higher by 70+ points. I am telling you right now, that the power they offer will be minimal regardless. The whole message that I am trying to get across to you is that for these guys, OBP will be supreme. When they are on base, things happen. Pitchers need to worry about them, catchers need to worry about them and they can take the base anyway.

And btw, Melky is having a better offensive yr than Ellsbury too.

Sure thing, Melky and his 1 HR, .384 SLG away from Coors Field East is having a better offensive year than Ellsbury who has the better AVG and OBP and better power away from Yankee Stadium.

I had the argument. I just felt like getting a dig in too

Not any different than all your other comments on here. Why exactly do you post in Red Sox fan forum, again?

I like Ellsbury hitting in the bottom of the order because it allows him to steal more bases and make things happen in front of the lesser Red Sox hitters. When he's at the top of the order, he really doesn't need to steal bases in front of the power bats.

Pedroia in the leadoff spot is just plain not working though (.221/.275/.316).
