thats a tough one because I HATE the yankees so much but 12 is certainly better than 8

No poll?

good point, didnt think to add one. just added it

The Sox have not beaten the Yanks 8-0 since 1912. I think that is more impressive.

when you take a step back and realize how close these two teams have been since the Henry group took over, going 8-0 is STUNNING and DOMINANT, ABSOLUTELY DOMINANT

The Yankees are our closest division rivals. Each win against them counts double. That means beating the Yonx 8 in a row is as good as a 16 game generic win streak. Assuming there were no Yankee wins among that streak (which IIRC they were)

The goal of this isn't really to look at it in terms of overall meaning in relation to the standings but rather which feat in itself is more improbable and impressive.

During the 12 game win streak, the Red Sox beat a lot of teams who weren't that good who had terrible pitching.

The Yanks and Red Sox are considered two of the best teams in the league, and the Sox have owned the series thus far. :D So, looking at it that way, it is more impressive to beat a good team eight straight times than it is to beat mediocre teams twelve times (really, nine times, as the Yanks were part of that twelve game run).

btw, a bit lost in all this is that the Sox now have the best record in the AL, 3rd best in baseball although that could change if we take at least 2/3 against Philly

The AL outside the East is pretty underwhelming this year. The Tigers and Rangers are the only non-East teams over .500.

A team is never as good as their winning streak or as bad as their losing streak. The truth lies somewhere between.

What I take away from the 8-0 (0-8 from the Yanks perspective) is that thus far the Yankees have showed minimal capacity to win games that really matter, while the Red Sox have done the opposite. If Sox-Yankees matchups are a barometer for post-season success, the Yankees are in deep trouble. But that's just one opponent.

I believe the other testing series the Yankees had was against Philly and they were 1-2 in that one.

The Sox may have the 8-0 advantage vs the Yanks but are 4-5 against TB and and 2-4 against the Angels, two teams that you'd generally consider using as a barometer for Sox success.

I'm interested in seeing how the Sox handle Philly this weekend, especially coming off a really nice win last night.

In mind it's hard to do the second without bearing the first in mind.

not when both occured before the middle of June

TB always concerns me, but interestingly the Angels have done really, really well against the Sox the past few years during the regular season. Not so much in the ALDS.

Voted for 8 over the Yankees.

A 12 straight winning streak may technically be more impressive, but the Yankee beatdown is much more emotionally sweet.

When you think about how magnified every Red Sox/Yankees game is - how much effort is put into those games and that they simply mean more than the others, as well as how close they tend to be, winning 8 straight vs NYY is more impressive to me. It hasn't happened since 1912, and it likely won't happen again for a very long time (either way). When we play the Yankees (regardless of the venue) I never expect a sweep either way if that tells you anything. I mean, we could play the Pirates 8 times and probably lose 1 or 2 in between. All in all this has been a remarkable streak.

Since the Yankees are one of the better teams in the league, I'd say it's more like a 20 game win streak against random teams. Assuming they are one of the top teams in the league, which they are, they'll probably finish with a W% somewhere around 60%. At that W% you need to play 20 games, going 20-0 to their expected 12-8 to net 8 games in the standings.

You know, it's a well kept secret, and seems incredibly counterintuitive, but a win in June is worth 1 win while a win in September is also worth 1 win.
