http://forum-soxprospects.com/topic/4263/t/Tracking-the-catchers.html

This thread on the Soxprospects forum got me thinking. I know it's way the heck early, but broaching the subject now hurts nothing, and the worst case scenario is that we all have a good laugh about it later.

I have to say, George Kottaras looked very good yesterday afternoon, even with the freak excuse-me double play. It's only been 2 games, but he's currently 2 for 6 with a double and a walk (good for a .926 OPS) and hasn't embarrassed himself trying to catch Tim Wakefield. He also got that double against a LHP, which got my attention.

It's still apropos to look past Kottaras to other options trying to find our "catcher of the future" for now, but he's off to a good start, and I have to think there's a point where Kottaras plays himself into the discussion as a possible catcher of the future himself. The FO has to be flexible enough to let a guy change their mind for them and Kottaras is beginning well at doing that.

Thoughts?

Sure, I know it's early for starting this discussion but you have to admit that all the signs so far are very good.

Im not ready to go there. Why would the Sox try to trade for Montero or Salty while they already had Kott in the system?

Well, I've got two answers to that. One, they didn't actually make the trade so it's not certain exactly what their feelings are about Kottaras, and two, having Salty doesn't necessarily mean that they don't trust Kottaras. You can have more than one catcher at a time on a roster.

Personally my guess is that the Sox explored the idea of trading for a guy who was a bit more of a sure thing, but had no compunction about going to Kot if the price wasn't right.

Personally, and this is mostly a gut reaction, I think Kottaras hits OK this year, impresses with the glove, and makes a serious bid to stay in the big leagues. I dunno if he can become a catcher of the future, but I can't rule it out any more than I can rule out the possibility that he goes bust.

It all depends what qualifications you have for "catcher of the future". Nothing in his minor-league career suggests Kott will ever be more than a .250 hitter, although he has decent ability to get on-base. He's competent bad defensively but isn't great at throwing runners out.

Yes I do know that there can be more than 1 catcher on a roster...

This is like the 18th catcher thread you've made.

We didn't have a current one. The last one we were still trying to figure out whether it'd be Brown, Kot, Tek, Bard or a trade. This one is just about Kottaras without all that superfluous fluff.

And frankly, while it's a 2 game sample, I think Kottaras is starting to answer some questions we've had about him. His D has been solid, he had a heck of a game yesterday, he handled Wakefield like he's done it all his life, and he's hit both righties and lefties (once each lol).

If you don't like a thread, don't top it.

So whats the deal then? If Kottaras goes hitless in his next two starts and allows a few passed balls, are you gonna make a thread revisiting the decision to get rid of Bard?

Nah, not hardly. I really like Kottaras and he intrigues me as a catcher with good patience and power. Since Kottaras is part of this team and Tek's nearing the end of his career, his performance is worth keeping an eye on. It is far from inconcievable that Kottaras will wind up at least as a placeholder after Tek finally moves on. Possibly a lot more than that.

I really like Alyssa Milano. She intrigues me as a 40-something woman with good tits and ass.

jake: I recommend a Beck's Dark while watching the Bruins-Canadiens game tonight.

BS21: whatever...but hopefully you get my point, for an "older" woman she's hot and more worthy of "intrigue" than a sweaty man in catcher's equipment.
