As for those trade rumors stemming from the Red Sox’ pursuit of Teixeira, much like his other obstacles this winter, Lowell isn’t going to forget that saga any time soon.

“I think it’s only human nature (to be upset) when you’re given the choice (to sign) in more than one place and you end up signing in a place where you proclaim to enjoy the baseball and everything and you look forward to being there for at least three more years,” said Lowell, referring to the three-year, $37.5 million deal he inked with the Red Sox after the 2007 season. “Then after one year, for there to be all this talk … the writing was on the wall.

“I think Teixeira would have been fine, and I would have been the one traded. And that’s the business of baseball,” he continued. “But it’s only human nature, and the natural reaction is to feel hurt, and I definitely was. But that doesn’t mean I’m not prepared to play, that I’m not excited to be part of this team with the guys on the field I see day to day. But that’s the totally normal reaction and that’s definitely what I had.

“I think I always try to use anything I see as a negative as motivation. Every negative I think should be turned into a positive.”

Mike Lowell Looks Back on a Winter of Challenges - by Rob Bradford of WEEI.com

lets hope Mike Lowell is a big man emotionally and that Tito can do a good job of reminding him what he means to this team. It IS business Mike, but you are a good player on a good team.

I honestly thought Lowell would have had a better understanding of the situation he is in. He's gonna be 35 in 10 days coming off a fairly serious injury. He should sympathize with the FO being skeptical about his ability going forward.

But he seems like the kind of guy who won't let himself be bitter over it but rather will go all out to prove his worth.

I think that's about as truthful of an answer you can get. He may realize he is going to be 35, and can see why, but that doesn't mean he can't be hurt by almost being the odd man out.

Mike Lowell is one of the most professional guys in the league. I'm positive he won't let this off season get in the way of 2009. I felt bad for the guy because he took less money to remain in Boston and had to go through the trade rumors this winter. It is a business though and he knows that.

I suppose, and he mentions the business part of it but the only thing that really matters is the attitude he's taking into the season and it seems to be the right one

The other way Lowell can look at it is that while the Sox did actively persue Teixeira, they didn't pull out all the stops to get him as if it were a due or die situation so that should tell him that the Sox aren't completely dissatisfied in still having him

Indeed. I think that Lowell is simply being honest and I respect that a lot. He would have been the odd one out, but I have no doubts that he's sticking with the team and that he'll play his hardest. Him pulling a Manny isn't even an issue in my mind.

We tend to forget this, but Lowell has been through this before -- he was involved in the Helton trade rumors. And he was traded to Boston in time for the 2006 debacle before he led the charge in 2007.

I have a lot of respect for Lowell and can definitely see his side of things. That said, it didn't happe, and he's still here, so let's play ball!

It shouldn't be.

Because the only player bizzarre enough to pull a Manny........is Manny.

I think its completely different than the Helton rumors prior to 2007. Lowell was stuck in Boston at that time. For 08, he chose to return to Boston when he had better offers elsewhere and then got jobbed all offseason when it came to Tex and the trade rumors. Plus, add in the bum hip and this might not be a good yr for ole Mikey.

Is there any scenario or bit of news, ever, that doesn't bode poorly for the Sox in your mind?

Bizarre outcome to Beckett's offseason training program yields massive improvements in arm strength and 120 mph fastballs.

That extra velocity will affect his command in a bad way. I expect him to struggle this year. /jacko

Sox learn secrets to obtaining clairvoyance, expect hitters to know what's coming and the defense to be in position to make every play.

They'll become so concerned with bigger issues that they forget to show up to the ballpark and have to forfeit every game. /jacko

Henry visited by Morgan Freeman God character and named 'Henry Almighty' for 2009 baseball season while being granted divine power.

Henry will realize how (you know what's coming folks, chime in together) 'good it is for the game of baseball if the Yankees are successful' that he'll make sure they win. /jacko

Don't try and take this innocuous statement and try and turn it into something it isn't. He was candid and admitted to what only a liar would deny, that there was an emotional component to his reaction about potentially being traded from a team where he is happy. He also treated it like an adult by stating he realizes that's the nature of the business and he'd be ready to play regardless. How about you treat the situation like an adult too?
