LAS VEGAS - The Red Sox have presented a contract offer to Jason Varitek [stats], said agent Scott Boras yesterday at the winter meetings. The deal is believed to be for two years, although the terms remain under wraps.

As for competing offers, that remains a large question mark.

“Representing a catcher is like a submarine, you have to look way underneath the water to see what’s going on,” said Boras.

The agent said accepting the Red Sox’ offer of arbitration “was never considered.”

I'm wondering if that submarine comment from Boras means he's trying to hide the fact there doesn't seem to be a market for Tek

You have to wonder that?

Once again, the only surprise this offseason has been the total lack of surprises.

I can see Tek and Tex having a press conference together, with Boras standing in the middle with a big s*** eating grin on his face.

It's so nice when plans go wrong for Scott f***er Boras.........yeah Posada money for Tek my ass.

He was just saying that as a ploy. He probably knew he could only get somwhere between 5-10M a season for 1 or 2 years. But why would he admit that. Say you start the bidding at a Posada type deal, the Sox offer a one year deal. And you comprimise around what you originally valued your client at. Good job on his part if you ask me. Boras knows how to play that game. GM's walk away thinking they have gotten a steal because they got Boras down from his original over the moon offer. But really he got exactly what he really wanted, and doing so with little to no market for his client.

I know it was ******** to get the Sox to bid against themselves.

What i mean is it didn't happen, like it happened with CC and the Yankees, therefore the Boras strategy failed, because the "market" for Varitek (Dodgers, Tigers) filled their needs before he could pull off typical Boras douchebaggerie.

How did he fail? He got a 2 year offer from ateam that only offered 1, while there was no one else offering 2 years. From what I've read, no one else offered 1. He got an extra year for doing what he does best. He didn't fail.

Sounds fair enough:lol:

I am fine with this under two conditions.

One, he is the backup. Not the Wakefield backup that the team has had the last few years, but he's the guy getting 30% of the starts.

Two, the Sox acquire another young catcher for Varitek to mentor. I don't believe all the preparation stuff that comes out and how much Varitek is lauded by the staff, but if the Sox believe it and the pitching staff believes it there's redeeming value there. If he can mentor a young catcher to take over for him in two years, that would be best case scenario.

A Varitek/Saltalamacchia platoon is very appealing to me, especially if Tek hits LHP and Saltalamacchia hits RHP exclusively.

I'd be elated at this set up. But now that texas has moved Laird, it's going to be harder to get Salty. They have been rumored to let Salty and Teagarden platoon this season. If we could get either or that would be spectacular.

Bowden + 2 lower level guys or 1 upper level prospect would be a nice haul for Texas.

I don't see a Varitek/Kottaras platoon being all that bad of an option

It's probably the best option if you assume that Tek will get the lion's share of the starts. Kottaras will take lefthanded at bats away from Varitek if he hits well, which is Tek's weak side.

LAS VEGAS - Except for the "offer" of arbitration which he declined, free-agent catcher Jason Varitek has not received a contractual offer from the Red Sox.

Varitek's agent, Scott Boras, had been asked at a press briefing Wednesday whether Varitek had received an offer to which he replied in the affirmative. But according to a source familiar with the talks between the Red Sox and Boras, the "offer" wasn't anything beyond arbitration.
