Limiting conversation around either player to LAST year is ridiculous as both were free agents.

You made the statement that there are always trade rumors surrounding prominent veterans 2 years or less from the end of their deal so I don't see why bringing up FAs from last year is ridiculous. If your theory is correct, it applies to FAs of any year in general

Where no one picked the words "worth less than s***" in the article, the sentiment was understood by me. I think what Bosox21 was saying was that people in Boston are quick to forget what a player has done for them and that his value to the team should not be based on one injury-based season. Whether I agree with the sentiment is irrelevent. However, irrespective of Bosox21's choice of words in describing Ortiz, it is a valid point. Would the FO be contemplating [once again, for your reading pleasure and lack of ability to comprehend what you read, no one is saying this is what the FO is doing] moving Ortiz if he had a 2008 that was similar to 2007? I don't think so, but it would be up for debate.

What kind of debate would that be?

"Should we trade Ortiz? He just OPS'd over 1.000."

"lol ya maybe we can get womack."

When you add something to this site besides a cool avatar, let me know. Basically, based on your level of intelligence in posting, if I see you disagree with any point that anyone makes, then I know that person is correct.

Irony.

OK that's even more ridiculous. If you just want to argue for the sake of the argument, do yourself a favor and actually have an argument.

What the hell is ridiculous? You said:

Any time a prominent veteran player is 2 years or fewer away from the end of his deal there will be trade rumors.

Pedro Martinez wasn't rumored to be traded in 2004. Curt Schilling wasn't rumored to be traded in 2007. Jason Varitek wasn't rumored to be traded in 2008. Just admit you made a stupid blanket statement.

It would be easier to say "Sometimes, prominent players who are near free agency surface in trade rumors, even if they are superstars", generalizing is never a good idea, since it always fails, Doiji, my friend.

Also, IIRC, Lowell was mentioned in the Helton trade rumors prior to the start of the 2007 season, but that's just for aclaration purposes.

However, never once during his Red Sox tenure did i hear/read the name Curt Schilling mentioned in trade rumors.

My whole point is that prominent veterans usually play a large part in the success of a championship-contending team so why the hell would they be the subject of trade rumors?

That's why i said Sometimes, i mean, it happens, sometimes the superstar is disgruntled (Manny), or maybe said contending team can fill a big hole by trading said player and then replace his production via Free Agency or a top prospect he's blocking (Ryan Howard>Jim Thome).

Another thing to remember' date=' Ortiz has 10/5 rights, so, yeah[/quote']

Didnt even think of that.....yeah hes definately not going anywhere. Nobody would give us anything. He cant play defense, (and if he can, he hasnt regularly in....well, ever. 70 games in 1998 is his tops) hes struggled to stay healthy (although hes managed to stay in the lineup) and his production is fell this year. We could argue he was injured, but teams can spin that same point for their favor, and also spin the fact he cant play d, or stay healthy, and the fact hes turning 33 and hes a heavier guy with bum knees.

The once MVP candidate does not have much value, the thing is......I think even if he had a similar season to last season, he still doesn't have much value considering his size, injuries, knees, and lack of defense.

I actually think you hear more about extentions, than trade bait.

Lower tier players are trade bait, not prominent superstars......prominent superstars are franchise cornerstones, not bargaining chips.....plus, why would teams want to trade for that player when they know they can just sign him when the contract runs out, rather than trade for him and then have to get in a bidding war if they planned on keeping him in the first place, all while surrending a player in a trade?

Because it all depends on the team's situation, and even if it is rare, it does happen.
