If he tore his ACL' date=' the season is over before it began. Might be time to call Strahan[/quote']

If he's hurt it's a big blow, but Jacko, you say some of the dumbest s*** (the first part).

He was right...

Like I said in my post I was referring to the first part of his statement where he said the Giants season was over before it started with no hint of sarcasm.

EDIT: By the first part I meant the entire first sentence, my bad, I didn't make that clear.

Oh, I was referring to the entire first sentence. I took his sentence to mean that if he tore his ACL, Osi's season is over before it begins. I see you took it at as him saying the Giants' season is over. Now that I re-read it, I'm agreeing with your interpretation.

Haha yeah, I looked back at my initial post and realized that I wasn't clear which part of his post I was referring to anyway.

But yeah, the Giants season is not over at all. I posted this in the other NFL thread, but I'll say it here as well. Osi was a huge part of the Giants, probably their best player. It's going to hurt a lot to use him. Him and Strahan were the two guys that were capable of taking games over and now they're both gone. However, he can be replaced for this season. Are they losing a lot? Absolutely. But can they recover? Definitely.

I think they have a few options. They can move Kiwanuka back to his original position and have a linebacking core of Antonio Pierce, Gerris Wilkinson, and Danny Clark. This is move I like. Kiwanuka is so fast, and in many ways is a younger version of the Osi. He was starting to adjust to playing OLB before he got hurt last year, but it shouldn't take him long to readjust back to DE.

The other thing they can do is leave the linebackers as they are and play either Renaldo Wynn or Dave Tollefson at DE.

As a Giant fan, Tom Coughlin, Jerry Reese, and Steve Spagnuolo have earned my trust and whichever route they decide to take I'll support as a fan.

I understand your optimism as a fan, but this is bigger than you are allowing yourself to accept. What made Osi, Tuck, and Strahan so effective last year is the fact that you could rotate 3 very good players at 2 spots. That means fresh legs at intervals throughout the game and fresh legs on quality players.

As for your alternatives, Kiwanuka's speed is a benefit when he can pin his ears back and go after the QB, but he's undersized and will get pushed around when it's about maintaining his gap. This is the NFC East, having a speed only end isn't a great idea. The other alternative is to go with a 3 man rotation of much inferior quality. Tuck will get double teamed all day.

This is a big hit to their DL effectiveness, and that is the unit that took them to the top last year.

The Giants won the Super Bowl once their front line got into a solid rotation and rushed the passer without needing to blitz. We won the Super Bowl because our front 4 were able to beat the Pats O-line off the ball and into the backfield. We have now lost the two biggest names from that front line. Strahan, Osi, and Tuck were the rotating DEs and ensured that the position was going to be stacked with fresh, powerful pass rushers. Now, Tuck and Kiwanuka will be on the field all season with a 3rd DE who is nowhere near their caliber. We just took the Gmen's biggest strength and turned it into an average position. With the deletion of Shockey, Wilson and Mitchell as well, this team went from a potential Super Bowl caliber team to a team that will struggle to win 8-9 games. When the season started, I thought we could win 9-10 games and make another run. Without Osi, I dont think we get there

Well, you do have a point lol, I am trying to be optimistic as a fan, although I think I might have a reason for it.

Osi and Strahan played most the downs, while Tuck was used on the inside (mostly on passing downs). For the most part, Osi and Strahan were not part of a rotation. The rotation mainly took place for the DTs (Barry CoField, Fred Robbins, and Jay Alford). Just pointing that out.

Now we have no idea if the other guys are going to be able to handle their new rules, so I'll reserve judgement on that one. However, that won't stop me from predicting.

Justin Tuck is going to play every down. That is a given. He has a lot of talent, but now with Osi out he'll probably be seeing a lot of double team. This will put the pressure on many of the other guys to perform. Kiwanuka will probably play mostly on passing downs if he is moved back to DE (because as you stated he's undersized). Renaldo Wynn and Dave Tollefson will also be rotated in and out, and what they contribute will be key.

Now, believe me, you would be hard pressed to find a Giant fans that appreciated more what Strahan and Osi accomplished the last couple of years. However, they've been together for a few years now, so what changed last year that allowed the pass rush as a whole to take it to the next level? The answer, in my opinion, is Steve Spagnuolo. I'm not saying he's the next NFL genius, but I believe his blitz schemes had a lot to do with all the sacks last years. They still have talent and I think Spagnuolo will be able to take advantage of that.

I want to say again though that losing Osi is a huge blow. He is far and away their best pass rusher, and his natural ability to get to the QB (regardless of the schemes) is a big loss. With half the secondary out him and Strahan took over the Dallas game last year, basically winning it themselves. They'll definitely miss that. All I'm saying is that I think they have some nice options in reserve.

As I said prior, Strahan and Osi were not really part of a rotation. They didn't play some downs, just like every DE in the league, but I wouldn't call what it a rotation. The DTs were rotated.

In my opinion Mitchell is easily replaced by Gerris Wilkinson. Mitchell, in my opinion, was a big part of Spagnuolo's scheme. And, again, Kiwanuka will not be on the field all the time (at least at DE).

On top of this, you're making a wins prediction without even discussing the offense. If Eli has turned the corner, considering the Giants' depth at receiver and running back the offense has the potential to put up a lot of points.

They're gonna re-sign Strahan and feel the pain I've felt with Favre the last three seasons.

I really doubt that they sign Strahan, and if they do I trust the coaching staff not to put him out there until he is really ready to play. This is a lesson they learned from the first few games last year, and I'm sure they'll remember it.

I dont think Eli ever turned a corner. He is what he is, an inconsistent QB capable of lighting you up or bombing out completely. He did so through the entire run. Hell, he tried his best to throw the super bowl away, but the patriots DBs thought they should look good for the camera rather than catch the ball. If Eli does "turn a corner", then the O will be something to behold. But I dont think he will.

You really aren't basing that on much. At the end of last season, and in the playoffs he showed the ability to manage and control the game. I don't think he's ever going to live up to the hype that comes along with a number one overall draft pick, but for this team to be successful he doesn't need to. Eli should be able to limit his mistakes, spread the ball around, and every once in awhile show off his arm.

Kevin Gilbride will make sure that the pass is setup by the run, and because of this Manning should be able to manage the game and be successful.

I had the exact same injury my junior season. Kept me from playing ball as well. Lateral meniscus tear.... I was one of the few lucky ones who could have it repaired instead of having the torn piece shaved out.

I would love this move.

As long as he is in decent shape I think it's a good move. The Giants do not have a difficult schedule at the beginning, and once that part is finished Strahan should be back in football shape.

Jacko, I'm just curious, are you a Giants fan or a Jets fan because I thought I remember you saying you were a fan of both or something like that?

Crushing blow for the Giants' date=' even if Strahan returns. I mean, Strahan DID retire for a reason, right?[/quote']

eh, i think his whole reason behind retiring was because he just won the super bowl and wanted to go out big like that. I bet he could play this season just fine.

And i am happy as hell they are trying to work something out for him to come back.

Strahan said in GQ this month that he probably would have retired anyway, even if they hadn't won it, but that it was a major possibility he'd have stuck around.
