KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Chicago Cubs designated reliever Scott Eyre for assignment yesterday, meaning they have 10 days to release him or make a deal for him.

The Red Sox had interest in Eyre before the non-waiver trading deadline, and are still monitoring him as a lefty specialist.

They could either try again to work out a deal — if Eyre clears waivers — or claim him on waivers. Still another route might be waiting for him to clear and then offering him a contract.

On a side note: I demand the rumor mill back. Damn you and your deleting ways Dave.

Lopez is doing his job well -- I hope the team isn't short-sighted enough to move guys who are doing the job for a *gulp!* national league reliever. Even Timlin has been OK recently.

Wade Miller lobbied for Theo to pick up his old teammate' date=' yea thanks Wade[/quote']

what was his career on Boston again? Like 11 ER in 6 IP?

Doubt Lopez would be moved for Eyre' date=' probably Chris Smith.[/quote']

Chris Smith is in Pawtucket. Are you going to dump Aardsma for Eyre???

Considering how well Timlin came on in the second half last year and that he's on a similar tear right now I wouldn't touch Eyre.

Smith isn't in Pawtucket yet, but you're right, Aardsma would replace him. You do raise a good point then, I can't think of anyone to get rid of after that. Timlin has thrown 10 innings since July, allowing 1 run.

Reliever Chris Smith was optioned to Pawtucket after last night's game. David Aardsma is expected to be activated for the weekend series in Chicago.
