Rotoworld -

Sources told CBSSports.com that the Red Sox are engaged in trade talks with the White Sox regarding Juan Uribe.

Uribe would be better protection for Jed Lowrie at shortstop than Alex Cora, but there wouldn't be any reason to play him regularly initially. As long as he comes cheap -- the White Sox would likely be happy just to dump his salary -- then picking him up wouldn't be a bad move.

Juan Uribe sucks. His only value is pretty good power for a SS. But he probably wouldnt beable to demonstrate that power coming off the bench.

3 Hrs this year. What power. Also he's played 47 of the 55 games he's been in at 2B, not SS. At $4.5m per year, I believe:

f*** this guy and the raft he floated in on.

I thought we were keeping Cora around because one day hes supposed to be a coach in our minor league system.

It's OK by me if Alex Cora accepts that role as soon as we trade, making us some room on the 40-man roster.

Cora's fielding range has declined significantly over the past two seasons, and TheKilo has posted how his hitting has tanked. Cora isn't an MLB-caliber player any more.

He is a great potential manager.

This would be a small upgrade on the bench, but the real benefit will be how often the benchwarmer stays seated. Uribe will be a newcomer here for only 3 months. Not an established "club guy" who has the manager's favor and has been here a few years.

I don't expect to get more than a bag of balls for Cora. Cora is aweful.

If he replaces Cora - I like it. He is a better defensive SS and has some pops. Not a starter by any means - but should be OK for a bench job.

From the espn rumor mill:

The Boston Red Sox and Chicago White Sox had been working on a deal over the past few days that would have swapped Juan Uribe with Alex Cora. The two teams would have split the salary difference, but Boston has backed away from the deal, writes Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe.

No Uribe

While the Red Sox examined whether to pursue White Sox shortstop Juan Uribe, major league sources indicate the team backed away from a possible deal to acquire him.

The Red Sox really like the job done by Jed Lowrie and feel that Alex Cora can be an adequate backup to Lowrie until Julio Lugo returns to the scene sometime in mid-August. That's not to say the Sox won't consider another veteran shortstop if the fit and price is right.

The Sox are still pursuing relievers. They had explored a possible deal with Washington for Jon Rauch but major league sources indicated that the asking price of Lowrie and Michael Bowden was too high. Rauch was dealt to Arizona.
