I know its not horrible, but the Sox have not been a very good road team thus far this season. There going to have to play better if they plan on accomplishing anything good this season. Not panicing yet, just thought I'd bring it up for conversation sake.

I will finish this statement aside from the stats you gave.

The Red Sox on the road are....bad.

They've looked especially bad against the A's these past two games after winning 7 in a row. Grant it the A's have really good pitching, but as good of hitting team as the Red Sox are they should be able to put up more runs then they have these past two games.

it isnt the fact that they arent hitting. its the fact that they didnt take any pitches yesterday. Duchsherer hardly broke a sweat.

OK - thanks BSN.

I will add as of today to this thread because the game thread gets locked.

Home -

Runs 6.0 tied second with Tigers. Cubs first with 6.3.

Hits 10.0 4th tied with Tigers again. Atlanta first with 10.5.

HR - 0.9 16th. Phillie is top with 1.6.

RBI - 3rd at 5.5 tied with Arizona and Texas. Cubs first with 5.9.

LOB - 21st with 7.3.

GIDP - 29th with 1.3

Road -

Runs 18th with 4.1 Marlins first with 5.5.

Hits - Tied 6th with 9.3 with SFO. Marlins first with 9.9

Home runs - 1.1 tied for 5th . First is Florida at 1.7.

RBI - 18th with 4.0. Florida 1st with 5.3.

LOB - 22nd at 7.6 .

GIDP - 28th with 1.2

My take - with LOB and GIDP - we are bad on both home and away. The runs and RBI dropped significantly on road - even though hits are almost the same. They homered more on the road - which is weird.

LOB and GIDP are the direct result of the team having a high OBP. You get a lot of guys on, you will strand them.

I would agree with you if their OBP weren't 50 points lower on the road.

So you are saying we lack a power hitter to bring guys home right? How about on the road - I guess offense still has hang-over from the Japanese tour?

No, that's not the implication. Nice try to bring it around to your point, which is wrong. GIDP and LOB are counting stats. Teams that put more runners on base will generally have more of them at the end of the year.

They are 4th in AL IsoD right now with .157, right behind a 2nd place tie of .158. Power isn't the problem.

ORS - I like your analysis in general. So in your opinion - what is the problem? Honestly - you must admit something is wrong with the bats on road - right?.

Selectivity. They are striking out more, lower BABIP, walking less, and seeing less pitches per plate appearance. This is likely due to chasing more and putting more pitcher's pitches in play. The IsoP pretty much holds up in the home/road split, but the IsoD is suffering.

EDIT: And, it isn't odd that they are hitting more HR on the road. Fenway, especially early in the year with the cold air and wind blowing in, is not a HR friendly park.
