In hindsight - is the Gagne trade the worst Theo has made or is it getting Mirabelli back from SD or Arroyo for WMP?

And I know we all were excited when the Gagne trade happened.

Mirabelli for Bard and Meredith in my book.

Escorting Belli to the Sox game like a celibrity just added extra negative credit for that trade.

I'll go with the Mirabelli trade.

BTW, anyone look at Arroyo stats in 2008? 8.63 ERA in the NL? Chris Carter might be the best player out of the three.

Yeah - I think WMP lost his spot in National's line-up.

Any idea how Carter is doing in the minors this year?

Pena started the last three games, before sitting in today's game. He's hitting .364 this month, after coming off the DL with an injury.

The Red Sox probably could have gotten Cueto, or Votto, if they wanted to wait for a prospect.

Cueto has cooled down after a sizzling start.

I don't know. He was very servicable and cost controlled pitcher after he took the hometown discount. We got nothing out of WMP - so far that trade has sucked for us. May be Carter will change it.

But may be that was the 3rd worst trade for Theo.

WMP did hit .300 with power in 2006. :dunno:

WMP was never a good bench player. Tito insisted on using him that way in 2007, and he sucked at it--when he went to the Nats and started regularly, he was great again despite a late-season injury.

I don't blame Theo for WMP, I blame Tito for misusing him. Furthermore, I'm a big Chris Carter fan if you're talking hitting (not fielding)...the Arroyo trade is not yet over.

Volquez is nice too eh?

Good move by both teams. The Reds had a top flight prospect waiting in the wings, and got a good pitcher in return.

It's too bad that the Reds hired Dusty Baker. Corey Patterson looks great in CF.

The main reason why I think Gagne trade was A REAL bad idea ( in hindsight of course).

From Rotoworld:

Engel Beltre went 4-for-5 with a homer and three RBI for low Single-A Clinton on Sunday.

David Murphy and Kason Gabbard have already paid dividends, but Beltre has the most raw talent of the players the Rangers picked up from the Red Sox for Eric Gagne last summer. The 18-year-old is batting .295/.331/.446 in the Midwest League.

Yeah, because I'm sure you know exactly who Engel Beltre was.

Please, STFU.

In Eric Gagne's favor, I'd like to point out that he has a 0.00 ERA in games in which his team was behind when he entered the game thus far in 2008...even though he has a 7.10 ERA in Save situations.*

FWIW, with Boston he was 13.48 in Save situations and 4.05 in other situations.

What is the idiomatic construction for "choke" in French?

* Edit: not counting today's blown save and loss.

Gagne at it again ' date=' comes in the 9th tied 3-3 , gives up 2 runs . ERA now sitting at 6.89[/quote']

There were some awful contracts in the offseason:

Jose Guillen .198/.234/.578 3HR

Eric Gagne

Andruw Jones .170/.279/.547 1HR, 4 RBI

Joe Borowski

David Eckstein .246/.315/.637

Adam Everett .196/.229/.512, 3 ERR in 15 games.

....as bad as Gagne has been, imagine how LA feels about Jones, what a mess. He was awful last year.....and it even worse this year....1 homer and 4 rbi's for 36,000,000+ over 2 years.

Woah woah we all know that Eckstein was a good signing because he plays tough. He's so gritty that his lack of producing should be overlooked. ;)

But honestly, I don't really think that contract was that awful. It was only one year and only for 4.5 million dollars. If it doesn't work out, which it looks like, he'll be gone next year.

Yost relieves Gagne from closer duties

Brewers manager won't commit to one reliever to finish games

http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080511&content_id=2680942&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb

MILWAUKEE -- Brewers manager Ned Yost on Sunday announced he is relieving Eric Gagne of his closer duties and will "mix and match" his relievers at the ends of games.

"It's not a problem," Yost said. "We got it covered."

Gagne, who allowed the go-ahead runs in the ninth inning Saturday and took the loss against the Cardinals, told reporters afterward he does not "deserve that ninth inning right now."

Check that last quote: Gagne can't stand the pressure.

"You can't explain to the average person what a closer goes through," Yost said. "It's hard. You're out there all by yourself.

"If he closes that game out, well, 'That's what you were supposed do.' If you don't, it's like, 'Ehhhh!' Everybody goes nuts."

Bold and italics added.

Yost is right.

Can you picture what it must be like for Gagne, to once have been the best closer in the game, and now to have lost both the skill that made him great and the confidence that carried him through the toughest pitches of a game? Can you imagine what it must be like to fail completely on a national stage once a week, with replays shown on ESPN the next morning for those who might have missed your humiliation?

I don't know how many millions of dollars it would take for me to accept that role. I do know that, right now, I feel sorry for the man.

He is, as we say here in Chicago, very grindy. He's had to become an effort guy though, because he left his ability in Anaheim.

so now Gagne is complaining of right shoulder stiffness which means he's over-exerting his arm after losing the closer's job and his formerly pharmaceutically-enhanced arm can't take it

PS: My man Craig Counsell gettin' it done!

No one...I mean no one...could ever convince me that Craig Counsell wouldn't be a better hiter than he is...even if just slightly better...without that fkn ridiculous stance.
