A-Rod was a bit early on that one pitch...oh well' date=' can't win them all.[/quote']

Well, Burnett is a buzzsaw when he is on, kinda like Harden and it sounds like he was on. I was pleasantly surprised by Mussina. After 5, he had 2ER and 6H. I'll take that every time from him. Looks like he tired a bit in the 6th.

He was getting slapped around like the soft-serve pitcher he's devolved into. He needed 3 GIDP to limit the damage.

I just watched the tape of the game (using a ton of FF through our offense), and that isnt true at all. In the first inning, Eckstein reached on an error, Stewart tapped a 9 bounce hopper between lead foot at first and Hollywood. And Rios broke his bat looping one over Cano. Inning 2, Hill hits another looper over Cano and Overbay walked on 2 questionable ball calls (looks like Moose was getting squeezed hard). The first real solid contact came after Rios walked on a questionable 2-2 pitch and Wells creamed the homer. To be honest with you, while it wasnt ace performance, he wasnt getting hit hard at all. Bleeders, dunkers and 2 walks on borderline calls. What I did not see from Moose was his 4 seamer. All of his FBs were 2 seamers sitting 85-87 with some nice movement. He also seems to have sped up his curveballs, which is interesting. He only threw the big, loopy 70mph curve a few times. Mostly sliders or 80 mph slurves.

He was facing a 750 run offense with no appreciable upgrades from last year - with Scutaro playing in place of Rolen to boot. Yet, he still needed 3 GIDP and a pile of excuses from you to make it acceptable.

He wasnt ace-like or very good. But 3ER over 5.2IP while not getting the crap kicked out of him is not too bad. Go watch the tape if you want to talk about piles of excuses. Overbay and Rios both should have been K'd in their walks and the first 3 hits off Moose hardly had enough gas to reach the OFer. I'm not rewriting history here, it is an accurate account of what happened. He didnt resemble the Moose from last yr. You know, the guy who'd get ahead of a hitter then give up a missile. He got ahead, but the missiles didnt come until Wells hit one into the seats.

Why would I watch the tape when I watched the game? I know what I saw. Smoke and mirrors. Will it last? Who knows. He might gain a few mph when it warms, but his stuff was BP stuff last night. He reminded me of Schilling prior to his injury time off last year. Fooling nobody and praying it got hit to a glove.

I taped the game. And while he wasnt fantastic or even terribly good, he was better than I thought he would be. Plus, the first 3 hits off him were dinkers. No matter how you try to slice it, you wont be able to convince me that he was awful, because he wasnt. Especially compared to the many awful performances he put up last yr.

and when compared to the potentially plentiful lousy performances he'll put up this year, heck, this might be viewed as a very good start for him. At least I hope so.
